Lesbian gamers are a minority's minority. Bonnie Ruberg has written an article for Killer Betties that examines their communities, concerns, and visions for the future. One of the biggest questions surrounding lesbian gamers is whether or not they need to create their own gaming space. When you consider how lesbians, and women in general, are used in the gaming industry (see right), it's not hard to imagine why lesbian gamers would want to isolate themselves.
It's our hope that this community will eventually feel comfortable in the gaming community-at-large. One of the most underappreciated aspects of online gaming is that it promotes a great deal of diversity, and we hope, tolerance. Yes, there are horror stories of vicious homophobes and racists running rampant on Xbox Live, but there are a lot more friendships being formed than feelings being hurt—friendships that would have otherwise never existed.
[Thanks, Bonnie]
