Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer for the PS3 to be shown at TGS
The Metal Gear Solid hype machine is starting to
ramp up again, and though a Metal Gear movie
is probably a long ways off, visitors to the Tokyo Game
Show next week will get treated to a new trailer for MGS4 to gaze upon and ravenously speculate about
for the next few months. Okay, so didn't we already catch a comedic glimpse of the game back at E3 in May? Well,
yes, that was a trailer for MGS4, but it was
rendered on a PS2, see? This will be the
first trailer for the game running off a PS3, though it hasn't been announced whether the preview will be
pre-rendered or running in real-time.
[UPDATE: The footage from MGS4 will
be running on real PS3 hardware, so we can avoid all that talk about
targeted visuals and whatnot. What a relief. Thanks for
the heads-up, metal_gear_jello.]
In other Metal Gear news, visitors to Konami's
TGS booth will get to enter a tournament using the online multiplayer mode from
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, and also get to
try a downloadable demo for Metal Gear Acid 2 on their PSPs (if they bring 'em). Though Hideo Kojima has
adamantly stated that MGS4 will only be released for
the PS3, you never know if the promise of a "casual" or
"everyday" "steak" will eventually bring the sequel over to other next-gen consoles. All of that pales in
comparison, however, to the true concern for all die-hard MGS(1) fans, which is: how much are we gonna see of
Meryl, and, perhaps more importantly, how little are we going to see of Raiden? I think we all have a sense of how
Kojima's gonna deal with that one.

OMFG i'm so excited right now I could eat a baby
Finished.Law.School @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Consdiering Boll is making a movie of this game all interest in any sequels will fade into oblivion.
kasamaan drakon @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Hideo has already said it will be ALL snake ALL the time, no more secondary characters to control. And, Meryl will for sure be playing a big part since she has already been identified on the teaser poster for the game. i'm hyped for this game too, but im wondering how far im willing to go to get a PS3.
JPRacer @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I don't want a PS3 and lucky for me I don't like the MGS serie.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
This will be sweet, everytime Konami shows a MGS trailer at any gaming convention the world stops for 5 minutes. This is probably one of the big reasons why the PS3 will be tough to beat. People will buy it for this alone.
BTW, it has been confirmed by IGN that the trailer will be rendered real time by PS3 hardware. Kojima productions has made that promise it says. Besides, Konami seems to be moving towards "rendered on the fly" cut scenes as seen with MGS2 and Silent Hill 3 and up.

Anyways, I'm excited. I hope they announce Silent Hill 5 too.

I just want two things...
1) Move the MGS series back indoors
2) Give me my frickin' radar back!
Dan Choi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Thanks for that bit of info, metal_gear_jello. I'll have to update the post with that news.
Oh, and kasamaan drakon, I'm pretty sure you'll be controlling Snake (er, the younger?) in MGS4, but Kojima did say that he wanted to bring back an all-star lineup of characters from the earlier Metal Gears:
"We also know that a few favorites from the series will make return appearances, including Meryl, Otacon and Revolver Ocelot. Thankfully, Solid Snake will this time be the main character, though Kojima hinted that Raiden might still make an appearance."

LOL, I loved the outdoor environments. Yes, they were harder to hide in but it was great.
In terms of radar. Good riddance. Kojima wanted people to play the game by the environment they were around, not what they could see on the radar. The radar gave a HUGE advantage to the player. Essentially making the game super easy. I hope they get rid of it. the sense of anxiety you get without the radar is just unbearable. Which i just love.
arg! @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I agre that the MGS3 was better without the radar. You actually had to take time and care if you didn't want to get caught, It got the heart pumping and made the game even better. I will also add that I am buying a ps3 only for MGS4.

"Consdiering Boll is making a movie of this game all interest in any sequels will fade into oblivion"
I don't see how a movie that might (or probably will) be bad has anything to do with the actual game - especially if you just don't go see the movie.
"I don't want a PS3 and lucky for me I don't like the MGS serie."
You don't want a PS3 or MGS4, but yet you spent the energy to read the article, click on comments, make a comment, and confirm your comment. Unreal. Besides which, how can you even know you won't want one? The best game of all time may come out for it in your favorite genre. Then what?
Domino @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
No radar....fine...I can deal with that. But at leaset give me full camera control.
The indoor aspect is key though. Look around corners, hide in lockers, it all works better.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Yes, indoor aspect is fun, as long as I can shoot the freakin surveilance cameras.
Tesla @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I know most people complained about controlling a character other than the original Snake but how cool would it be to have Meryl as the main controllable character? I'd even play a revamped MGS1 from Meryl's position. That would rock!
Einhanderkiller @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Give me tighter controls.
Give me full camera control (plus static camera).
Give me new gameplay.
Give me even better sound.
Give me an even better story.
Give me full online.
And it'll be even better than my favorite game of all time, Metal Gear Solid 3.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
OMG #14, MGS 3: Substistence already covers much of your points. You don't even have to worry about MGS 4.

Rob @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I love MGS. But I'm gonna lose my love for MGS if they don't fix these shitty cameras. At least make the camera like Splinter Cell. I'm sick and tired of looking at the ground cause of the camera. We need more camera options. I want to be able to control the camera 100%, like Max Payne.
Jonathan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I think this game is gonna be more challenging than the others, remember the quote "No Place To Hide" this means its gonna rock, big time. I'm buying the PS3 just For this game, the series are awsome and i love each challenge they come up with, no radar(fine) using camoflauge (better) switching characters(It is still MGS) I love the MGS games they are my favorites so defenitly the next three games (MG Ac!d, MGS3 Subsistence, and MGS4) will be no exeption, I can't wait for their releases.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Yes, I love the concept, "no place to hide". From the interviews Kojima have done, it seems that he is going to try to make a dynamic environment where everything is destructable and non static. Like someone eluded to, hiding under a truck or tank will not work forever and from the trailer and subsequent interview, hiding behind objects may not work if it is destructable. But time will tell what his true intentions are for this game.
I just want to know what significance Olga's baby has to the story, and why the Patriots are holding the little fellow. The poster suggests that Raiden may have rescued the baby, or maybe he's working for them...
Manwithnoname @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM

Boll is NOT gonna make a movie of this game. He expressed interest in making a MGS movie, but Kojima is a movie lover and knows how bad Boll is. There's no way he would let him make a MGS movie.
Rect0o @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I'm really looking forward to see this game sience I'm a real MGS fan, been gaming sience the first Metal Gear and I'm definitly getting a PS3. Especially for this game.
Rect0o @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I wanna know if they are planning on a huge graphics level or if it's gonna be only goodlooking. Though the environments should be huge and detailed wich is perfect since MGS3 was great outdoors. I really hope that Kojima will create this game for only the PS3 unlike Twin Snakes that should have been better on the PS2 rather than the GameCube console.
Kevin Repp @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I think Big Boss is not dead and was just set up by somebody just like the Boss was in Mgs3.
He is not really bad just being a true patroit.
ariel @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
MGS3 ie the greatest gma i have ever played, its f*cking awesome!!!!!
trigger @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
is that fella second from the end on the photo of the characters big boss?
Dante @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
The only thing im gonna Buy PS3 Is FOr MGS4 And Problely the remake of Final Fantasy VII "Hope they Decide to Make It"
Senor @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Yes, it has been confirmed to be Big Boss. I thought he became a Snatcher though...
Rect0o @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Its not Big Boss in MGS4! How could he poosibly know Otacon...he wasn't even born at Big Boss' time. Why is it the electronic eyepatch that makes everyone wonder.
Think again! IT'S NOT BIG BOSS!!!
