Joystiq: Liveblogging from Pret-a-PSP, NYC
Two live-blog events in a single day? Who says all the gaming action is out West? Tonight's
action comes from floor of the Pret-a-PSP event here at 275 Hudson Street in New York. The celebrity royalty have not
yet started to arrive, but when they do the laptop gets shut and the camera comes out in preparation for the nip-slips
and so on and so forth. One of those always happens at fashion shows, right?
Here's who is expected: Gwen Stefani, Linsday Lohan, Paris Hilton, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Andy Roddick, Piper Perabo, Theodora and Alexandra Richards, Alek Wek, Kirsty Hume, Anouck Lepere, Jaquetta, NAS, Kelis, Jadakiss, and "More" (that would be the people not important enough to name in the tip sheet).
Tonight's collection of PSP fashion accessories is expected to come from "top fashion talent" including L.A.M.B., Fendi, Calvin Klein, Anna Sui, Christian Louboutin, Tommy Hilfiger, J. Mendel, Earnest Sewn, Lulu Guinness, Martine Sitbon, adidas, and Missy Elliott's Respect M.E.
[For a taste of what we're up for, peep our coverage of Sony's big PSP launch event from this past March.]
Someone just said, "Something something something PARIS HILTON something something something." The response? "Niiiiice!" But her Hiltonness is nowhere to be seen. See, even in fashion circles that woman reduces men to monosyllabic utterances. We're not so far apart after all!
Below: pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
Weve spotted our first celeb (maybe). Joystiq, meet Brenda and Barbara. Barbara and Brenda, meet
Joystiq. What the hell does a video games blogger say about a fashion model? This hardware is alien to
us. Um, our eyes are wandering to the PSP down there, nothing else, ladies.
Its 8.13 PM when does Paris arrive? In the meantime, here are some deets about Fashion Week NYC.
Fashion Week is the biggest event in fashion, taking place in NY around this time every year. DJ AM (Nicole Ritchies fiancee) just arrived. He says Twisted Metal is the game hes looking forward to. He also says, Gadgets should look cool. I want my gadgets to look fashionable.. The PSP is a beautiful device.
Update 9.04PM: Most of the celebs have now filtered in via the red carpet or back door. Were inside a raw, loft-like space thats under-airconditioned and over-hairsprayed.
Lights have dimmed and the event is underway.
Oh why pretend anymore? Lots of images incoming.
Shocker: Gwen actually owns a PSP. The let-down: she only got it so that she could test its fit in the bag she
designed for the show. Shes never actually used it. Try as the Sony crew might, they couldnt get her to say more than
a couple words on it before she launched into another soliloquy about how nervous and excited she is for her fashion
show next week.
Lindsay Lohan didnt suffer the Sony press. She blazed right by, clearly not in the mood to pretend that she has ever even seen the device. Thats cool, Lindsay. Well remember that when weve got an advance copy of GTA: Liberty Stories and you are jonesing to get your play on. See if we let you come over then. Just you wait and see!
So heres how the show went down. Lots of pretty ladies, and a fraction of their number in pretty men pranced around the runway. Some of them had PSPs in their hands, some did not. More often than not, they held handbags designed to encase PSPs lovingly and expensively.
The music was loud, the crowd enthusiastic about the models, anyway. One PSP that was tied to a chair in the front row sat idle while people watched each other.
Heres the best product shot of the night. A PSP carrying case by Lulu Guinness. What player wouldnt want to be seen toting this around, even if it is a smidgen large? But fashion never cares a stitch for practicality in clothing or accessories, and theyre not about to start caring for some little gewgaw.
Time to join the fray in the next room. Theres disco dancing and beverages.

HEEEEY! You can talk about Paris Hilton and all the rest till you drop dead from playing too many video games...BUT LEAVE GWEN'S NAME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH, NERD! She's above the rest.

the PSP should be called the CTS. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The ergonomics flat-out suck. And maybe they should release a decent game for it while they're at it. Sorry but Lumines is over rated. I've got a DS and a PSP and much to my surprise I'm all over the DS and barely touch the PSP anymore... it's like an albatross hanging around my neck.
BlackYoshi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
YOU SHOULD BUY THE PSP BECAUSE ALL YOUR FAVORITE CELEBRITIES DO!
America's obsession with celebrities is utterly retarded.

WOW KC, you ARE smart indeed. I don't think either that Sony perhaps paid 50 cents for the PSP to be on his video, and surely that's artistic, considering the PSP is a great work of ART, as opposed to a "portable convergence entertainment system" crap.
And now that you say that you "believe in the love for the PSP" despite admitting it doesn't have any games... why do you feel "love" for it anyway? Because you can play movies on it? Why not buy a cheaper portable DVD instead? Or you can actually play MORE music on a much more comfortable (and cheaper) device called iPod mini.
As you can all see, this piece of shit system is targeted to the kind of people that like "50 cents" and watch MTV all day instead of actually learning how to spell or get a job. I mean who cares about these stupid sluts? Gwen? Hilton? Lohan? I don't give a shit if they play it or not. Surely it helps sell the PSP, because the event will surely appear on "E! entertainment TV" just because some hollywood sluts are on it, and the dumbasses that consider all the event "chic" will think "Paris Hilton has one, SO IT MUST BE GOOD!".
When was the last time Nintendo made a party for it's console with celebs? Specially with celebs that you can be sure that are NOT gamers? The most they have gotten to do is use models to play Nintendogs, but we all know that women like cute things like pups, or mini devices like micro cell-phones or iPod minis, as opposed to "cutting edge looking" bullshit like PSP or Xbox 360.
You think Lindsay Lohan gives a Shit about Wipeout DX? Or paris Hilton about Street Fighter Alpha 3? Or Gwen about Rockman Rockman? Or 50 cents about Darkstalkers? Hell no, and this rehashes are the only games that are worth right now for the PSP.
Don't buy a PSP. At least until it has good games on it.
Vincent @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
All your celbrities are belong to Sony.
Seriously, how much did Sony have to pay these people toget them to advertise a product they don't even use, just because it looks cool? It's a great piece of hardware and all, but holy crap, this is getting ridiculous. They make up for a lack of good games with an abundance of pretty faces.
How many sellouts does it take to sell a PSP? The world may never know.
Andrew @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Why is my favorite Gaming Blog reduced to the likes of Entertainment Weekly and their non-sensical celebrity idolism.
Man.. this is a sad day for video-games.. A very very sad day.
Shame on the people who run this blog and the author of this blog..
SHAME

Wow @ #19. tl;dr
vc @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
#23: I don't see any celebrity idolism or idolicism here. If we didn't cover publicity events for the PSP, we'd have some other readers who were unhappy about it.
No matter what we think of the specific event, we feel that we serve our readers best when we cover things like this.
Ombre @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Now see, if Sony actually did events like Nintendo did with the DS (like the US prelaunch party, they let a BUNCH of celebrities try out the DS before anyone else, so they actually know what they're playing), rather than just hold a little show like this, the celebrities would actually know just what the hell they're talking about and toting around.
Oh, and 50 Cent has a Jungle Camo DS specially made for him. :P
Asher @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
"As you can all see, this piece of shit system is targeted to the kind of people that like "50 cents" and watch MTV all day instead of actually learning how to spell or get a job."
Funny. It's "50 Cent", not plural.
Mza @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Wow, this article just confirmed that the PSP is 1000 times better than the DS. I feel sorry for people who own DS's what a waste.
Theresa @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Andy Roddick was there... he's soo cool... i don't think he should be counted in any of the lists of ppl that should die. He's not like any of the other celebs. He doesn't really like the attention.
Tom @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I think its sooooo sad that you people who bought a psp so that u could continue to be ignorant and think its the better handheld need to confirm it to yourself with comments like "Wow, this article just confirmed that the PSP is 1000 times better than the DS." i bet this person has never played a DS. Who wants to play boring and recycled games on a handheld thats too big to put anywere? or that needs charging every 5 seconds?.
I have played both, and while i admit the graphics on the PSP are better than the ds, that only keeps a person entertained for a very short time! As we have all seen with the N64 and the PS1, graphical power dont mean squat to sucess. The PSP gave my hand ache, my fingers hurt, i wanted to change game every 5 mins cos i was soooo bored! the handheld was just so bad!
then later on i played a DS. My first game was Wario Ware, at first i thought it was a bit too odd, but within about 5 mins i was so addicted, i had to buy a ds. Thats from just ONE game. I played bomberman too and that was such fun! and then i found someone else with a ds and the multiplayer was fun.
The whole point of any console is that its fun! and thats something i only had on the DS. oh and btw, theyre bringing out an attatchment to play movies and mp3's. But i wont be buying it because if i wanted that, i would get something more suited like a standalone mp3 player.
2 of my friends who were massive Sony fans and were very ANTI nintendo had a go of my ds today. They played bomberman and Nintendogs, by the end of it they both wanted to buy a DS and wished they hadnt bought their PSP. the problem is, u arrogent people who are too scared u may enjoy playing a game that doesnt envolve blowing someones head up with a gun. and its this reason you are missing out playing the best hand held ever, the Nintendo DS. Go play on one, u too will see what i mean.
