Joystiq: Liveblogging from Pret-a-PSP, NYC

Pret-a-PSP red carpet - before the eventTwo live-blog events in a single day? Who says all the gaming action is out West? Tonight's action comes from floor of the Pret-a-PSP event here at 275 Hudson Street in New York. The celebrity royalty have not yet started to arrive, but when they do the laptop gets shut and the camera comes out in preparation for the nip-slips and so on and so forth. One of those always happens at fashion shows, right?

Here's who is expected: Gwen Stefani, Linsday Lohan, Paris Hilton, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Andy Roddick, Piper Perabo, Theodora and Alexandra Richards, Alek Wek, Kirsty Hume, Anouck Lepere, Jaquetta, NAS, Kelis, Jadakiss, and "More" (that would be the people not important enough to name in the tip sheet).

Tonight's collection of PSP fashion accessories is expected to come from "top fashion talent" including L.A.M.B., Fendi, Calvin Klein, Anna Sui, Christian Louboutin, Tommy Hilfiger, J. Mendel, Earnest Sewn, Lulu Guinness, Martine Sitbon, adidas, and Missy Elliott's Respect M.E.

[For a taste of what we're up for, peep our coverage of Sony's big PSP launch event from this past March.]

Someone just said, "Something something something PARIS HILTON something something something." The response? "Niiiiice!" But her Hiltonness is nowhere to be seen. See, even in fashion circles that woman reduces men to monosyllabic utterances. We're not so far apart after all!

Below: pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

We’ve spotted our first celeb (maybe). Joystiq, meet Brenda and Barbara. Barbara and Brenda, meet Joystiqpret a psp nyc. What the hell does a video games blogger say about a fashion model? This hardware is alien to us. Um, our eyes are wandering to the PSP down there, nothing else, ladies.

It’s 8.13 PM — when does Paris arrive? In the meantime, here are some deets about Fashion Week NYC.

Fashion Week is the biggest event in fashion, taking place in NY around this time every year. DJ AM (Nicole Ritchie’s fiancee) just arrived. He says Twisted Metal is the game he’s looking forward to. He also says, “Gadgets should look cool…. I want my gadgets to look fashionable….. The PSP is a beautiful device.”

Update 9.04PM: Most of the celebs have now filtered in via the red carpet or back door. We’re inside a raw, loft-like space that’s under-airconditioned and over-hairsprayed.

Lights have dimmed and the event is underway.

Oh why pretend anymore? Lots of images incoming.

Shocker: Gwen actually owns a PSP. The let-down: she only got it so that she could test its fit in the bag she designed for the show. She’s never actually used it. Try as the Sony crew might, they couldn’t get her to say more than a couple words on it before she launched into another soliloquy about how nervous and excited she is for her fashion show next week.Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan didn’t suffer the Sony press. She blazed right by, clearly not in the mood to pretend that she has ever even seen the device. That’s cool, Lindsay. We’ll remember that when we’ve got an advance copy of GTA: Liberty Stories and you are jonesing to get your play on. See if we let you come over then. Just you wait and see!

So here’s how the show went down. Lots of pretty ladies, and a fraction of their number in pretty men pranced around the runway. Some of them had PSPs in their hands, some did not. More often than not, they held handbags designed to encase PSPs lovingly and expensively.

The music was loud, the crowd enthusiastic about the models, anyway. One PSP that was tied to a chair in the front row sat idle while people watched each other.

Here’s the best product shot of the night. A PSP carrying case by Lulu Guinness. What player wouldn’t want to be seen toting this around, even if it is a smidgen large? But fashion never cares a stitch for practicality in clothing or accessories, and they’re not about to start caring for some little gewgaw.

Time to join the fray in the next room. There’s disco dancing and beverages.
