Rockstar pisses off Jack Thompson…again

GTA Liberty City PSP screen (225) A new Grand Theft Auto, a new format to upset anti-game advocate Jack Thompson. However, this time, instead of waiting for the controversy, Rockstar decided to simply jumpstart it themselves with a rather entertaining yet obscene nod to their favorite Miami Lawyer. Go to the GTA Liberty City website and click on one of the overhead e-mails – specifically, click on the one from the lawyer "JT" about "Citizens United Negating Technology (For Life And People's Safety)" (we will let the Joystiq reader figure that one out). Here is a snippet of the fictional letter:

The internet is unambiguous evil. The only things worse than the internet are computer games and liberals.

You get the idea. To the left of the e-mail (highlight the typewriter) is a link to JT's website (very funny, but please do not go unless you are over 18 or so). GamePolitics.com has received a letter from Jack Thompson citing the website's "obscene assault" on his character, which he claims, "Bisexual pedophile Jack Thompson is the combined message." Somehow I think he is better off letting this one go, and having a good laugh.

I think Jack Thompson needs to realize the concept of entertainment and real life himself,nevermind the people he's after.

I mean,I see more tits on basic cable on a Sunday afternoon than I do in videogames.It's all a form of entertainment,same as movies,same as tv,same as music,all which have a strict rating system so it all boils down to the parents fault.

LOL! I actually don't like GTA myself, in fact I disagree with the game on several levels. However I totally disagree with Jack's shennanigans and hold little respect for the guy. Censorship of any kind is dangerous, plain and simple. Rockstar just gained a little respect from me with this stunt, though a little off-color...

The real shame is that folks like Jack Thompson actually stifle intelligent debate on video game violence. I honestly think more games deserve an 18+ rating, and there needs to be a culture akin to the movie industry where these things are at least somewhat enforced.

Of the two places I have lived, one has got it totally wrong, and the other is approaching something reasonable. The Australian video game law is quite simply insane, and very much Jack Thompson's dream. Europe on the other hand rates quite a few games 18+, but there is a somewhat limited culture of enforcement.

Rockstar is right to poke fun at Jack Thompson. The man is an idiot. But at the same time they have to face the fact that they are producing adult oriented content, and it should be dealt with accordingly.

So, I guess everyone's forgetten about Hillary Clinton. As far as I know, she's pretty liberal, yet also one of the founding Citizens United Negating Technology (For Life And People�s Safety). She's also in a position of political power, and not just some babbling talking head soundbite lawyer idiot. She can actually effect the future of video games through real world legislation. Thompson's a moron, a goof, a talk show novelty. But while he's making amusing noises, and you're using those noises as the slogans on your latest hilarious Cafepress T-shirt, people like Clinton and Lieberman are actively working behind the scenes to determine what's "acceptable" entertainment for the common citizen. For your own good, of course. Oh, and the children. It's all about the children, really. Takes a village, all that.

It made me laugh, but whatever..

But if we have to pick hairs here, she wants the ratings system enforced by law, which beats the shit out of Jack Thompson's stance of banning all video games outright.

I don't agree with her either, but not all "liberals" agree with Hillary Clinton.

Hey I just wanted to say that people who want to take away liberty for safety deserve neither liberty or safety " " . As an aside I really like joystiq, and while I am not interested in GTA I like protecting our first amendment rights as much as the next guy. The fact is, in some areas I am conservative. In others I am liberal. I wish that the editors would reduce the political injections as many conservatives think that Jack Thompson is a CUNTFLAP too. We as gamers, (and first amendment supporters) need to stick together, and not argue over liberal verse conservative, but rather pro-gaming or antigaming. There are pro-gaming conservatives and antigaming conservatives (Jack Thompson, Ashcroft(clothing a marble statue?!? cmon)). There are also progaming liberals and antigaming liberals (Hillary Clinton, That Lee senator in Cali). Noone will ever take us as gamers seriously if we dont present a united front (both on the industry and the consumer end). If however we work together regardless of political affiliations in support of gaming freedoms and the first ammendment, we will present a force as politicians will be loathe to cross.

I ordered San Andreas from them right before Clinton and the gang got it pulled from the shelves and when they sold out they sent me, free of charge, a really nifty Rockstar poster and about 100 different color Rockstar stickers and bumper stickers. I just got the package yesterday, and now I read this. Keep it up Rockstar, stick it to the man (and whatever the hell Hillary is)!

Rock on, Rockstar. I'll have to delve more into the web site once I get home, but so far, it's priceless. JT is a nutcase (he's nothing but a dolt with too much time on his hands and not enough reality smarts in his head). Rockstar has fired back... now it's Howard Stern's turn to parody this wack job with the pending FCC investigation from complaints that were filed on behalf of JT.

I'll buy GTA:LC once it comes out. Waiting to see if the will be a "hot coffee" like mod that has you pitted against JT.

I have to say this. I am a lawyer. I spend some of my time gaming with doctors and other lawyers. No joke. A group of about 8 or 10 of us get together on a regular basis. We are highly educated and yet we play video games. I say this in direct response to Mr. Thompson calling all gamers morons. We are not. I am not. My other attorney friends who game are not. Nor are the phsyicians and surgeons that I game with on a regular basis.

Jack, you are a troubled man and you give lawyers a bad name. You're a media whore. You are neither interested in the issues you peddle nor are you interested in an actual debate on the issues. You resort to name-calling, which as any seasoned debater knows, is the absolute weakest form of argument. It is a tactic used by incompetent attorneys everywhere. You can't think of something intelligent to say, so you attack your opponent personally. It's infantile, amateurish, and disgraceful. You should be ashamed of yourself, sir.

I would like to propose a challenge to the oh-so-esteemed Mr. Thompson -- I would like to see you post an intelligent, thought provoking, well-researched, factual argument (with appropriate citation to reliable authority) to justify your positions on video games as espoused on your website. To make it even more challenging -- do it without name calling, insults, or resort to any of the other infantile, intellectual excrement that you have, until now, used as your platform for debate.
