Scans of real-time Metal Gear Solid 4 & Devil May Cry 4!
Oh, the hits just keep comin'... GA forum users are really getting into the Famitsu-scanning swing of things
now with some incredible real-time images
from both Metal Gear Solid 4 and
Devil May Cry 4 for the PS3. We can't wait to see
this in a crisp digital screenshot (as opposed to the grainy pages of a magazine). [UPDATE: The trailer for
MGS4 will also run on actual PS3 hardware.]
In the scan pictured, a
much older-looking Snake—who sure looks a lot like Big Boss, though he's truly Solid Snake—is taking his new brand of
tactical warfare to the streets. (Two more MGS4 scans can be found
here and
here.) That eye "patch"
you see here is actually used for remote viewing of enemies through a robotic ally that roams around on wheels.
[UPDATE: Could this have something to do with that
"Solid Eye"
scope just announced for Metal Gear Ac!d 2?] In
additional
scans
posted, a very realistic
(but still rather impudent) Dante can be seen frolicking about in the way that only he can in Devil May Cry
4.
The next-gen console wars are really heating up now, folks! We'll see if Microsoft can pull something equally pretty
(and exclusive) out of its hat during its pre-TGS press
conference tomorrow (which will actually be late tonight here in the States).
[thanks, ROG27]

Wow...just wow.
OTAM @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I don't want to sound like a dick,but I told you so.
Look at the stuff on the PS3,it's not very much far from the 360 (if even noticeable at all). The 2 systems are going to be so close you won't even be able to tell the difference.
Maybe the Sony fanboys will give it a rest now and understand this.
suhail @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
i saw the article and gamespot and i was juts waitin' for the scans. Whats up with the mustache?
ROG27 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
All I gotta say is I crapped my pants when I saw those scans...you really gotta see Dante too from Devil May Cry 4...these character models are eerily looking like pre-rendered models..sometimes even better looking. You can say hello to KILLZONE 3 looking just like that video at E3.
Bobby @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
The robots from MGS4 look like stuff from either Zone of the Enders or Ring of Red.
I am so freakin' excited.
aegies @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
would i be remiss in expressing more than a little skepticism at these "real-time screen captures" running on "ps3 hardware"? considering everything sony released looking like this at e3 was exposed as a prerendered target film, i'll believe this when i see it running at an instore display, or when we hear of reliable sources actually playing it.
ROG27 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
You are wrong...Hideo said this was running real-time on ps3 hardware in the article in Famitsu you are looking at...look at the translation on ign.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I love the small walkers in the MGS4 scan. Inspired from Rex no less. And Otacon looks amazing! In terms of his facial details of course. You know... I don't play on that side of the fence.
"would i be remiss in expressing more than a little skepticism at these "real-time screen captures" running on "ps3 hardware"? considering everything sony released looking like this at e3 was exposed as a prerendered target film, i'll believe this when i see it running at an instore display, or when we hear of reliable sources actually playing it."
These images have been provided by Konami and Caocom, Sony had no part in this. Konami has stated that it's releasing an in game trailer, why would they post an artificial image? I can't say the same for Capcom, but the decor of Dante's ally looks eerily similar to resident evil 5 alley's.
"Look at the stuff on the PS3,it's not very much far from the 360 (if even noticeable at all). The 2 systems are going to be so close you won't even be able to tell the difference."
So far, these screens have impressed me more than any game on the 360. Gears of war is the only thing I find comparable.
And quit trolling these boards. Your comments have been nothing but annoying anti Sony dribble.
WonderBra @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Even in the future, Solid Snake STILL dons a mullet!
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
It's not a mullet unless it's down to the shoulders. He's donning the ancient jedi pigtail.
OTAM @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I've seen lots of stuff on the 360 that looks like this (Gears of War,PRG3,NBA,Ghost Recon 3) and all everyone does is critisize. Now Sony puts out a few screenshots and everyone goes crazy?
It's honestly disgusting the way people are anymore, makes me wonder where all the actual gamers are who can love all the consoles the same and just enjoy the games for what they are rather than comparing them to something else.
aegies @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
"These images have been provided by Konami and Caocom, Sony had no part in this. Konami has stated that it's releasing an in game trailer, why would they post an artificial image? I can't say the same for Capcom, but the decor of Dante's ally looks eerily similar to resident evil 5 alley's."
you mean like those madden 06 "trailers" that got released back in april? the ones microsoft had nothing to do with? the ones sony enthusiasts decried as bs? they were fake. like i thought they would be. to claim that images like these are "real" because they're from konami or capcom is disingenuous and a little deluded. they have a vested interest in the success of the console, and their games. companies release "screen shots" that turn out to be hogwash all the time. but for some reason, people keep buying it with sony, and i'm not completely sure why.
everything so far "revealed" for ps3 has been bogus. if you expect me to believe that these are real, then you're sorely mistaken. i hope they are. just like i hope the resident evil 5 teaser we've seen is real. but i'm leaning very much towards not. just like i was leaning very much towards "not" when ps2 tech demos were released. there's precedent for sony doing this, and whether you care to admit it or not, konami and capcom are both deep in sony's camp right now, much like square was during the hype campaign for ps2.
you can claim what you want to about microsoft, but at least virtually every 360 game that's been shown has been in some state of playable build. that says more to me than "rendered in real time on the ps3". i haven't seen a single developer use the magic (but often lying) words "in game" for any of these yet. they're very carefully avoiding it. even sony went into cover-its-ass mode during e3, and never claimed that anything was "in-game".
p.s. those small walkers are apparently references to kojima-sans "Snatcher", not previous metal gear games.
ROG27 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Solid Snake was inspired by Kurt Russel's "Snake" character in Escape from New York and Escape from LA movies...as Hideo once himself admitted in an interview. So, it's no surprise that he dons Kurt's famous 80's mullet and even looks alot like Kurt.
ROG27 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
aegies...I see how you can be skeptical...but when Hideo Kojima himself utters the words "Nothing but real-time" about these screenshots (in japanese...if you'd read the translation you would know this) - you must believe that these are real-time.
Never doubt. Nay-sayers will bite the shit-end of the stick this time.
jimmy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I'm neither a huge sony or microsoft fan. With that said, this game looks infinitly more interesting than anything microsoft has shown for its system.
OTAM @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Poster #12,aegies,I love you, you're my new hero.
It's about time someone on here has some fucking sense and can see through all of Sony's shit. It's been a long time since I actually read a post as logical as yours.
I'm not being sarcastic either,it's nice to finally see someone using their head and realizing all the shit Sony has put out so far is fake.
You can't compare the 360 to the PS3 because everything Microsoft has shown is some sort of in-game footage while everything Sony shows is some screenshots and fake trailers.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
"Never doubt. Nay-sayers will bite the shit-end of the stick this time."
Ironic, or as Steve Ballmer would say. Eating the shit sandwich, whether with ketchup, or mustard or plain. But they will eat it and they will like it.
"I've seen lots of stuff on the 360 that looks like this (Gears of War,PRG3,NBA,Ghost Recon 3) and all everyone does is critisize. Now Sony puts out a few screenshots and everyone goes crazy?"
I've never criticized anything. So WTF are you talking about? When an Xbox 360 shot goes online all the MS fanbois go crazy, what's the difference? Nothing.
"It's honestly disgusting the way people are anymore, makes me wonder where all the actual gamers are who can love all the consoles the same and just enjoy the games for what they are rather than comparing them to something else."
Talk about not practicing what you preach...
"p.s. those small walkers are apparently references to kojima-sans "Snatcher", not previous metal gear games."
So you're saying it has nothing to do with Rex? Uh huh...
aegies, your disdain for anything sony is obvious. And somehow you've projected it onto Konami claiming they are liars. To this date Konami has never made a pre-rendered imagery for the MGS series on the playstation (PS1 & PS2). Why would you think they wouldn't show us in game footage now? These guys know how to code, and they do it well. I'm sure they are eagerly anticipating showing off their latest wares.
Chris @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I believe these are real time. KCEJ and Kojima have a history of only showing footage rendered on actual hardware. The original E3 showing of MGS on PS1 was even bested by the final console version in terms of graphical quality. The E3 showing for Sons Of Liberty was obviously realtime despite outcry to the contrary.
I agree that the only thing I've seen on X360 that matches these images was Gears of War. (Ghost Recon looked great until they released the full trailer, and you could clearly see that they were switching between pre-rendered and in-game.

Is anyone listening to me? God, it's not like i've been taking crazy pills or something.
In the interview in Famitsu magazine (from which these images were taken - grabs from the trailer to be shown at TGS), Hideo Kojima himself says that what we are seeing here is "REAL-TIME, nothing but REAL-TIME".
End of discussion. You nay-sayers don't have to believe the facts...but when they are coming straight from the horses mouth - it really makes you look like a bunch of idiots.
IRL @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Are any of those in-game footage? They look good, nonetheless.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
The funny thing is, this is all done on early development kits. When the trailer for MG3 was done Snake had a primitive look to him. Now when you compare the actual snake from the released game to the snake in the teaser, it's clearly enhanced. So imagine what this looks like two years down the line when it's released?
I think all of Ghost recon trailer was in game, it appeared to be anyways.
Honestly, this has pretty much confirmed what platform I'm getting for next gen.

"End of discussion. You nay-sayers don't have to believe the facts...but when they are coming straight from the horses mouth - it really makes you look like a bunch of idiots."
Don't bother, these guys can be playing the game and still say it's prerendered crap. It's just flamebait. They are getting defensive cause the PS3 has finally shown what it can do.

Chachi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
For some reason those shots of Snake remind me of The Dark Knight Returns. That kind of give that vibe of a very aged hero stepping back into the game during a time of calamity. Really looking forward to the story on this one, especially considering the hints Kojima has dropped about 'hiding in plain sight.'
OTAM @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
metalgear,I don't think you understand.
Only the idiots would even remotely care about graphics.I mean,I understand it's a big deal with it being a new console, but who honestly care what a game looks like anymore? Graphics are a nice little bonus but it's the gameplay that matters most.I could honestly care less if the PS3 is more or less powerful than the 360,it just irritates me that people actually bide by this when it comes to purchasing a console. If it worked that way then nobody would be buying consoles and the world would be gaming on the PC for the graphics.
Everyone should plan on getting the console that has the games they like on it.So far Sony hasnt really shown anything that interests me,wether that be the games just don't at all or that they arent far along enough to show anything.I loved my PS1,with games like Syphon Filter and Crash Bandicoot, but over the years I have rarely touched my PS2 because I never really cared for anything on it.I've pretty much been playing my Xbox and DS for this generation.
I personally don't understand the huge deal about the Metal Gear Solid series. The same goes for Halo and Halo2. I mean,I played Metal Gear Solid on the PS1 and enjoyed it but that's as far as it went.I,myself like the Splinter Cell series better just because I like to sneak around be stealthy rather than "run n gun". Again,it came out on the Xbox first, which is one of the reasons I got the Xbox, because of the games on it,not because of the graphics or anything else (the hard drive was a little incentive though,I had to admit).I'm not saying these games are shitty or bad,i'm just saying I don't understand the rave about them.
Sure the fanboys go crazy when their company "shows up the opposition",but that's expected because they swear by a company logo rather than the actual content on the system so whatever company they swear by does is always right and the others are wrong. It just irritates me how people are never happy with Microsoft and what they do. For every one thing they try to do good for people there's 5 idiots to complain about it as if Microsoft has to live up to some unrealistic standards these people hold, and most of these people i'm referring to are the ones who swear by the E3 PS3 demo,so that's the only reason I get irritated when ignorant people open their mouths (i'm not referring to you,but those know who you are).
I will I don't like Sony much but that's because i've had 3 PS2's that never leave my entertainment center die on me and they havent given me any games I want to play,so i'm a little bitter when it comes to Sony.
Phil "Osirus" @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
The Devil May Cry 4 is probably pre-rendered, but when you look at what they pulled off with MGS4 they can get something very close to it anyway.
But man, MGS has been my favorite series and these pics are going to prevent me from sleeping till Friday, when the trailer is released!
And YES IT IS REAL-TIME. MGS has always been in real-time, and Kojima Production are not lying on this point, so stop crying.
I'm also very excited about this game because it doesn't look like just another Unreal-made FPS with pretty graphics. Also they are aiming for a more natural feel to the game (no more exclamation marks and such), with ennemies surrounding your locations and shouting at you and all. Man it will be awsome!

Mariofan14 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I got to say that these are great. What don't get is why PS3"REAL TIME...YEAH" looks so amazing while real time 360 looks "OH GOD THATS TERRIBLE". I mean if you look at the systems specs they a very close. The PS3 a little faster, but the CPU's And GPU's are very close in actual performance. And on top of that the 360 is, according to several developers, easier to design for. I’m not a PS3 hater, more of a 360 fan really, but way is the gap so big from what we’ve seen for the 360 and this "Real Time" PS3 stuff?
Slashbunny @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
But what a second! I thought MS/Sony said that their system was the bestest ever?! Screens from both consoles look pretty good! How could MS/Sony lie and say theirs would blow away the competition?!
How surprised will you be when the first Revolution screenshots come out and you realize that Nintendo's console is ALSO just as graphically capable as these two?
This generation is the same as last. The 3 consoles will have similar graphical capabilities. MS and Sony both want you to think the other 2 consoles are going to be like playing an Atari 2600 compared to their console. Obviously this isn't true. All 3 consoles will look very awesome, don't base your purchasing decision on how "powerful" the system is. That's moronic. Purchase based on which system has the best games.
figgaz @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM

Are these sposed to be real-time in-game or prerendered

Stephen @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I guess some of you will just refuse to listen to anything because of the "fanboyism"
Konami had stated that MGS4 demo on TGS will be rendered real time. It's most likely the PS3 development kit. It hasn't even show the full potential of the PS3 yet.

aegies:
I'm assuming you must be a younger guy, and you haven't been through this before RE: Hideo Kojima. If you had been around when the first real-time footage of MGS came out, you'd remember: a year before it's release, we all saw the footage and the skeptics said "no way." Likewise, when the first time MGS2 footage was unveiled, skeptics said "no way."
While I understand why reasonable people are cautious to believe Sony's hype, there is absolutely no historical basis or precedent for calling Hideo Kojima a hype-merchant or a liar. He has proven time and time again that he shows something real, or he doesn't show anything at all. He has always delivered the goods on release day.
As a game fan, you should be happy about this, not hating. A true master artist is giving us all a glimpse into the future. I don't care which platform gets me to this future, I just want to play the games.
DigitalStupor @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
First off, These pictures are a mixture of concept artwork and various in game renders enhanced with hi rez texture packs. All the developers are doing this to increase the cleaniness of shots as PR. The final game might look similar, but not nearly as clean as this.
Second, these are low resolution pictures (low rez GRAINY scans), so I can't really tell much of anything from them. I'm tired of all the manufacturers releasing BS, and not only BS, but LOW RESOLUTION BS. Sony and Developers haven't released much of anything yet, but Microsoft and Developers keep giving us these low resolution trailers and screenshots that are driving me crazy. If they want us chomping at the bit for these up-coming games, show us the WMV HD, or QT HD, or DIVX HD trailers, full rez screenies, and advertise them on the internet for us to easily access. I have a big juicy broadband connection, give me the goods!
One more thing, Joystiq, please!

Nintendo fans will have a new Mario,Zelda, and Metroid.

"Equally pretty? A bunch of low rez grainy page scans? You even said this yourself! I'm not impressed."
You can tell even from the "low-res" scans--magazine print is pretty grainy, but at least the DPI's pretty high--that this game is gonna be gorgeous (that is, if the shots were actually taken from in-game footage or renders). That's why I said: "We can’t wait to see this in a crisp digital screenshot (as opposed to the grainy pages of a magazine)." I still can't wait for what's coming tomorrow and Friday.
