Now that the Tokyo Game Show is right around the corner, it's
become just a bit easier for American game correspondents to talk to Japanese game developers. Witness the possibly
simultaneous interviews conducted with Treasure company president Masato Maegawa and posted on both
1UP and IGN. Heck,
each
site even has a nearly identical photo of
the guy in front of some Gunstar posters! (Scroll through each story to see some more similar pictures, even
of the elevator notice posted
here and to the right.)
But getting back to the interviews, questions centered mainly on Treasure's tendency not to make sequels,
its stubborn 2D ways, practical principles of game design,
Xbox 360 game rumors, and, of course, Gunstar Super Heroes (the GBA sequel to the Genesis side-scrolling
action classic Gunstar Heroes), which has been completed and will be playable at TGS. At any rate, it's nice
to know that an independent developer can still focus on the games it wants to make (and makes best) in today's
big-budget, 3D-publishing world.
