I really, truly believe that Nintendo's nailed it. They make sense in what they say about the industry. Also, they weren't just talk about the Revolution. They backed it up. This is crazy. Look at Nintendo's image. I cannot believe, that in my opinion, the Revolution is the sexiest console of the three. People, Nintendo are changing. And they're changing for the better. Not just for themselves, but for this entire industry. Like Vinsum said, they re-invented the industry 20 years ago, for the better I should add. And I think they're about to do it again. I swear to you, the more I think about this controller, the more I feel that the controllers we have now seem more obsolete.

Listen, I (like alot of you) am really excited about the new N-controller. But at the same time I cant help but feel as though this may not be a good idea. Perhaps if this was a controller that you can get after release or as another option then cool. I am also probably to late for anyone to respond to this too. I just hope that there is or shall I say something that either:
A. comes with the console so that that remote thing can slide into it to be used as a regular controller or
B. can turn off all of the features so that you can just use it as a regular controller
Nintendo can not afford to make this a standard for there console. Now Before I get into my reasons I hope someone out there can answer my questions or give me good quality feedback. Maybe this was already touched on or something.
I think that this is more of a novelty than necesity. When I was younger I had the running pad for Nintendo. After a week or 2 I was done running and resorted to button mashing. My point being is that games are a way to relax, clear your head, lots would say it is a form of laziness......whatever. Hasnt anyone thought about this being or getting old REALLY fast? (besides looking stupid)how many times are you going to want to come home and swing your controller like a sword in a game of (choose your fighting, slasher game). Or move your controller really fast to represent chopping like that cooking video? Etc. I work long physical days 8-13hrs. a day. The last thing that I want to do is get up and swing my controller around. True the intial novelty of it would cause me to run home and play a hot game to stab someone with but for how long before I get tired of that? month or maybe 2? America is not the most active country out there. In fact I think we're among the least. I just see this getting really old really fast. I just hope that Nintedo has a plan against this. They really need to do something to keep interest in using these features. I think it is no secret that Nintendo doesnt exactly put out hit after hit every month so what are they to do? And after shelling out my money for the system I do not want to go out and buy a peripheral of some sort in order to use my remote as a regular controller. I dont own a DS or another GC so those options (for extra controllers) are out of the question. I wont get into ports because I dont know a whole lot about it but I would think that it would be a little difficult. So anyways, thats my little rant. Although I am for it I am also torn. I can just here it now....
John: "Yah I got the new NR its great!"
Joe: "Hows that new controller? Heard it was cool?"
John: "It is cool; but it gets kinda dull because you have to swing it around so much."
Let's be real. It can and most likely will happen. I REALLY want Nintendo to succeed but I just dont know. I would hope to see %33.3 for all consoles as I had stated before but........ I just can thelp but feel that after the initial novelty of having this system with this controller lasting longer than a few months. I HOPE THAT I AM WRONG!!!

Being the huge nintendo fan I am, I hope this isn't a flop, being that it already has a lot of 3rd party support, a classic style controller, revamped graphics for its classics, and new types of games, besides the "new" old types with better graphics.

If it does, then I hope nintendo keeps making games at least, even if it's for xbox, the console I like the least.

Isn't it awesome how so many people changed their minds about this controller? Nearly everyone's first impression was by sight... "OMG A REMOTE WHICH SUCKS!" Then after reading what the full potential really does, everyone slowly came to realize its truely revolutionary.

Unfortunately, there are those who think "OH GAWD, I HAVE TO OVERREACT AND JUMP AROUND AND ACT LIEK GEY BECAUSE THATS WHAT TEH VIDEO SAID!!!". Which why the video bothers me in a way. But it DOES get the point accross. Some people just take it too seriously.

And THEN we have those who sit in their corner saying "Nintendo is for babies. I'm so cool with my playstation3/xbox360. Only cool people play on those consoles." OF COURSE, we'll always have those fanboys, even if Nintendo dominates the videogame market.

To the same extent, we have those who do NOT want to try anything new. Who knows you guys... it could be the best new flavor of cake, and you could miss out on it because you like your original vanilla flavor. Be open-minded... it will serve you well.

Alrighty, sorry, I just had to let that out. I mean not to offend anyone. I'm just noting that there are people out there blind to what could be the best friggin' thing on the earth. But its still to early to know for sure... so thats why I'm saying COULD.

As for my opinion? Revolutionary. What else can I say?
Oh yeah...
I'm NOT planning buying an Xbox360 anymore... I need to save up for my next Nintendo...

Amazing how after all these years, Nintendo has still had me. Even after the Gamecube 'slow period', without any Halo 2's.

I think it'll be pretty awesome. I don't what the big deal about dev support is. Even if the developers didn't want to embrace this kind of new tech they can just port to the gamecube controller specs as the Rev will support this. It does look like a remote control, it's supposed to so your Grandad will pick it up and have a heart attack when spaceships start flying towards him! Personally I can't wait.

It kinda reminds me of the iPod Nano in looks

I think a lot of people are underestimating Nintendo but I don't think they're that dumb. Sony's PS2 console was massively more successful than the GC but they never made a penny on it, even after selling all those game licenses. It was a loss-leader for them and it's one of the the things that put them in a bad way financially. The PS3 will cause Sony to lose 1bn in it's first year because of it's expensive production costs. Nintendo doesn't have the biggest slice of the console cake anymore but it has the unusual advantage of being both innovative and profitable all the time - year on year. Nobody thought the DS could compete with the PSP but it's still kickin PSP's black ass in the marketplace. Having played both, the PSP looks like the dogs bollocks... but it plays like a dog too. It's slow to load games, the analog stick is a disaster and all the other stuff that it's designed for (playing movies, listening to music) is much more difficult than it ought to be. Give me an iPod Nano and a DS anyday.

Okay. I think that the PS3 and Revolution's controllers are getting laughed at too much. When the PS3 controller was revealed at E3, everyone was going "oh look, it's a dang boomerang!" and when the Revolution controller was revealed at TGS, everyone was going "oh look, it's a dang remote!" Well I for one am getting the PS3 and Revolution, regardless of what those retards say. And I know many of you agree with me. The Xbox 360 controller is so.....plain. The PS3 and Revolution controllers are a LOT more interesting. So for those retards who think the Xbox 360 is better than the PS3 and Revolution, I say, "watch it or I'll shove the Xbox 360 right up you A$$!" Oh yeah! I'm making one helluva statement. Anybody with me?

Billy, I'm with you. I'm getting a PS3 and a Revolution, but to be honest, I was shocked with both controllers first, and I am getting them anyway for the games, not for the controllers.

Then I realized the PS3 controller is much smaller than it looks, and they better add analog buttons (as opposed to 'pressure sensitive' bullshit in the analog thumbsticks). And yet I was impressed with the 360 controller, because the first Xbox controllers were pieces of shit. Both of them. The new 360 controller is great anyway because it followed the Playstation standard (four shoulder buttons and four face buttons), and it has extra LIVE features, plus the analog triggers, yet it doesn't have much innovation, only the LIVE button, which isn't a big deal.
I still prefer the PS3 controller though, if only (I repeat) they add analog triggers.

The revolution controller can't be compared to the other two because it's something too different (and it's not complete anyway), yet I'm very willing to try it.

About the games: I saw the new "Kameo" videos, and yes, the graphics look great, so? They don't look extremely better than this generation's graphics, and to be honest, it looks like an extension of today's games, or of N64 games. I actually thought they could be an extension of Banjo-Kazooie, and to my surprise, the game is made by Rare, which I didn't know until today.

I want something new, which I'm sure the revolution will bring to the table. And I can't hardly wait for the revolution shell controller, I'm sure it's gonna rock because Nintendo has never let me down.

Ok, everyone, CALM DOWN! People are taking this way to serouisly and when you take stuff serouisly you make them seem more out of the truth.

See your not going to be waving your hands maincally, only if you want to(you will most likly be able to set sensitivety), but youl be most likly be using your wrist only other wise youl only be able to game for a little bit(like in fast paced games)

I think Nintendo has hit the jackpot it is amazing this controller it looks sleek(with an apple edge to it, so you know its gonna look sexy) and it is innotiave, unlike sony and microsoft that just give the same sytem steroids, Nintendo has brought in a new fighter with fresh new looks and skill that will blow the comptition away.

P.S They said that the Revoltuion will be "weaker" then the compition, because they are using diffrent type of things that ahve smaller stats but in the end is more powerfull, they are using PPU(Phiscal Proseccing unit) so you have full on speed, the GPU has a whoping 600MHZ(the 360 has 500MHZ) the L1 cahch has 112KB(i thinbk i dont know that one off by heart) so the revolution beats the 360 and ps3 in two difrrent ways(weaker in some stronger then others)

HAIL NINTENDO, plege your allince with nintendo soon, or youl die in the bloody console war.

I think it's great.. I always hated FPS games on XBox and PS2 because it was so hard to aim with the analog sticks. This should help out a lot, just point and shoot. I'm excited to see the lineup of Revolution games, I think Metroid Prime 3 is going to be awesome with the new controller.

This is something I've already posted elsewhere but some of you seriously need to read it if you truly love games as you so claim. Open your eyes everyone. The 1st point is regarding a few concerns being posted on various sites when it comes to 3rd party ports and development. The last demo that the journalists who have played with the controller experienced, was the 1st level of Metroid Prime:Echoes. There were two reasons Nintendo showcased this. 1st, and an important point in it's own right, was to demonstrate how easy a FPS feels using this new control method. In fact I've read two reviews from two different people who state that not only could you rotate and aim with ease and precision with small subtle movements (meaning you don't have to do what the commercial implies), but that there was absolutely zero to little concious thought or effort involved. But 2nd and most importantly, the game itself had been re-configured to implement the controller in only a couple of weeks. This implies that a FPS as the example given here, can be easily ported over to the Revolution. The crux of the situation is this. If all the software houses we've come to rely on for our favourite genre of game have no problem porting, what we're gonna see is not only the games we've come to love getting a new lease of life via a wholly unique method of input, but those same software companies being inspired to develop titles that will utilise gameplay methods that they have perhaps only dreamed about up until now. The comments so far from industry experts and programmers would seem to reflect this. Everyone wins in the end. Let's not flame each other when it comes to brand loyalty. There should be no such thing. They won't pay your medical bills after you've contracted arthritic joints years down the line :-p Hell even Peter Moore acknowledged Nintendo for it's input to gaming as a whole. I love GAMES and to me that is the ONLY thing that matters. If Sony or Microsoft had come up with this idea I would be applauding them instead, it just so happens Nintendo has thought outside the box to enthuse not only hardcore gamers but new ones too. The fact is this. If the industry continues as it has been, and cornering only niche markets then we all lose out cos there will be no industry. To compare. I don't particularly like sloppy, candy-assed romantic, feel good movies, but if there were only the 4 or 5 different genres I do like, there would be no movie industry. There's just too few people to support it. Let's get behind the industry as a whole and thank f**k someone has tried to revive it. And for those saying the new controller is dumb without bothering to read any of the articles from the people who've actually used it, then please don't post. You're only making yourself look silly. Developers and industry experts from various corners have heaped praise on the thing because they realise the potential for more immersion in gameplay. These are creative, artistic individuals who have had a new window opened to them to allow their imaginations run riot. This can only be good for gaming as a whole, regardless of which particular platform you support because rest assured both Sony and Microsoft will adopt this new control system into future versions of their hardware. It may not look the same but the principles will be there, just as the analogue stick is now the norm. Peace and thanks for reading.

Controller

The Nintendo Revolution controller from various angles. The Nintendo Revolution controller, unveiled at Tokyo Game Show 2005, is shaped like a simple television remote control and operates like a mouse in three-dimensional real-space.

The controller is a major departure from the last 20 years of console design. Two sensors near the television allow the controller to sense its position in three-dimensional space; other sensors in the controller itself allow it to sense its tilt and yaw. Players can thus mime actions (and receive "rumble pak" style vibration feedback) instead of simply pushing buttons. An early marketing video [6] showed actors miming such actions as fishing, cooking, drumming, conducting an orchestra, shooting a gun, sword fighting, and performing dental surgery. To communicate with the sensors, the Revolution's controller uses Bluetooth technology. [7]

The "nunchaku-style" analog stick peripheral (right) attached to the main controllerA digital directional pad is positioned at the top of the controller face, with a large GameCube-styled A button directly below it and a trigger on the underside acting as the B-button. Below the A button is a row of three small buttons: Start, Home, and Select. Near the bottom end of the controller are two additional buttons labeled lowercase a and b (labeled X and Y in promotional videos and likely the final product), suggesting that users can turn the controller 90 degrees and use it like a classic NES controller. Beneath these buttons are four lights which indicate what player number the controller is being used for--at present, up to four players are expected to be able to play on a single Revolution console.

The controller in various possible color schemes
The controller can also slip inside or attach to peripherals through a proprietary port on its bottom end. A tethered peripheral with an analog stick and two shoulder buttons (labeled Z₁ and Z₂) will, according to Satoru Iwata, be bundled with the free-hand controller (letting the user play games "nunchaku-style").

A "shell" peripheral is also slated to release for the Revolution that will be "very similar in style and form to the Wavebird" [8]. The official name for this is the "Classic-Style Expansion Controller". According to Iwata, it is meant for playing "the existing games, virtual console games, and multi-platform games" (TGS 2005 keynote, 40:43). The freehand controller will slide into a hole in the top of the classic controller, and thus it will retain the freehand controller's position sensing capabilities. IGN has an article called "Understanding the Revolution Controller", which discusses the shell as well as includes a mock-up of what the shell might look like. [9]

Wikinews has news related to this article:
Nintendo unveils controller for Revolution consoleNintendo promises a wide variety of peripherals ranging from dance mats to analog game controllers. Peripherals may be cheap enough to be bundled with games much like the rumble pack, expansion pack, and microphone for Star Fox 64, Donkey Kong 64, and Mario Party 6 respectively

The controller is neat, I admit. I've lost interest in Nintendo, because they get none of the games I've always wanted on a console - namely, first person shooters and epic-depth level RPGs (Halo/Morrowind for the Xbox, as an example). Those are what sold me, not their annoyingly short and stale 1st Party games.

Many of you think porting an FPS to this system will be easy, or developers will want to, etc. Will it really? Okay, the controller can stand as, esssentially, a mouse (except the return of Mario Paint), which developers will probably LOVE, but the main problem Nintendo has to deal with is POWER.

They've already declared that the system is going to only be roughly 3x~ as powerful as the Gamecube, where as the Xbox/PS3 are many, many times stronger than their legacies. Now, compare the level of detail that games have been receiving - HUGE. Game production value for graphics alone has skyrocketed, thus also increasing the sale of powerful video cards and processors and RAM sticks.

So, if a developer wants to put their game onto the Revolution, you will have to dumb down your graphics phenominally, and in essence "retard" your game. Sorry, but my speculation for this system is that it will remain alive only by its fanbase.

Vandell, first of all, graphics matter too little in this race, PS1 and PS2 demonstrated it.

Second, it's not about how much "power" you have, it's how you use it.

And third, nintendo has always been conservative when talking about specs. The PS2 supposedly was able to push between 6 and 10 times more polygons than the gamecube, according to Sony's "estimate" compared to Nintendo's estimate. We all know how it all turned out.

It's retarded to buy a console solely for its graphics. Of course, people WILL look at it as a good reason, but in the end if there are no games, it won't sell, and if there are great games, it will sell.

what pisses me off is things like; i just visited the Wanadoo web site (sorry im in england - dont know if you have it there) and they have posted an Xbox 360 FAQ, in which the caption included with it reads: "It's only a matter of weeks before the Xbox 360 is released - but how does it match up to the PlayStation 3? Find out".
this type of blind arrogance just pisses me off so much; its so frustrating that sites such as these (and popular tv shows, radio stations etc) that have the power to influence their audience just turn a blind eye to nintedo altogether and give out the message and image that nintendo isnt even a competitor when compared to sony and microsoft.
i dont care about the bad decisions(amongst other things) that nintendo make:- its things like these arrogant reportings that destroy nintendo the most overall

Ignorance... People take one look at something and assume that because it is not brand name it will suck. When someone hears Ps3 they think "Best graphics/console ever" just because of a hyped up reputation, just like a Jaguar (car) there are plenty better cars than that, its just a name many people are familiar with so they use it, like Farrarri or however it's spelled.

Will:

Which console does not come from a common brand? Nintendo has been in this industry more time than Sony. Microsoft is the biggest of "the big 3". So what the hell is your point? Getting a TIGER handheld? Most likely you don't mean that, LOL, but it sucks anyway.

I agree, power/graphics shouldn't matter so much, but how you wield them is. However, if what I have heard *is* true, developers will not have too much to wield. Games are becoming more and more detailed, as already stated, and developers will have to (excuse my french) retard your game in order to bring it to the Revolution's level.

Regardless of what many people may think, most gamers look at graphics first for their selection (I don't, or else I wouldn't be playing Ultima VII to date!). One thing that impressed me is the rumours I've heard about Bungie's upcoming Halo 3: it will focus on gameplay elements first, and graphics second.

But, I'm getting off track. IF - and only IF - the Revolution does not contain a decent amount of power, I predict a slow and painful failure in the marketplace.

Vandell:

Nobody knows anything about Revolution specs yet. We all know nintendo is conservative in that area. The only time they really bragged about being more powerful was when they had an actual 64-bit console competing against 32-bits consoles.

Regardless, I think it will be powerful enough.

I hate to reply to this topic so far from the date that it was originally added, but I find a few things silly.

Someone commented on the last two generation races, saying that the PS1 and PS2 are good examples that the most powerful isn't necessarily the winner. Good examples, yes, but you can take that argument back to the eight bit days. The NES was extremely limited in terms of raw power, but they had software support.

I am trying to remain as unbiased as possible with this new generation. I currently own a GBA, DS, GC and PS2 (soon to be acquiring Guitar Hero). I have to say, my tastes in games have changed.

Although I enjoy Metal Gear Solid 1 and 3, Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden for the XBox, the original GTA3, and epics like Zelda, I am really into it for new experiences.

Like many gamers, I've played all the popular systems since the eight bit era. I am growing tired of all the same sorts of games. Platformers and action games had their time to shine, and the past two generations have brought RPGs and FPS/TPS to the top. Eventually those two will fall to another genre.

The Sim/Rhythm genres are huge right now. DDR, Guitar Freaks, Guitar Hero, Donkey Konga 1/2 the Taito drum game, Samba De Amigo, Beatmania, The Sims, Black and White 2, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, Trauma Center. Those are two bigger genres, but that isn't all.

Niche games are making more head room, and it's proof that people want new experiences. Katamari Damacy is a prime example. Namco has taken a complex controller and simplified the way it's used. They've teamed simplified controls with unique visuals, innovative gameplay, and a superb sound track. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, while seemingly simple, is another solid unique title. I am not saying that because of the use of the bongos (although I find it to be more entertaining than a controller), but because of the new approach to the standard platformer. The combo system is plenty robust, and the game is visually stimulating.

I see Nintendo's approach with the new control style, and welcome it to the group. I'll have one pre-ordered, and urge people to atleast give it a try. You can't blame them for taking a stab at it, atleast some people are trying to prevent developers from doing "what MTV did to music."

They are games. They are entertainment. They aren't a physical representation of your testosterone levels, and they don't make girls think you're cute (sorry for the blanket statement).

My first reaction at the beginning was that I will get a PS3 for sure... (Blu Ray, backward compatible with 99% of PS2 titles). 360 has no specific feature that really appeals - just more of the same. I thought that Nintendo will go down this round...

But this controller changed my mind... they will fly this generation. If they only had a Blu Ray or if the PS3 had this controller then it would be easy. A 3d controller by one of the most successful and respected names in the inudstry.

Some of you need to get of your fanboyism and place more pressure on some manufacturers to get of their big budgets and innovate for a change. If the XBox had Blu-Ray (stupid move to back the loser HD-DVD and then only for playback and maybe later on) or a really innovative controller (like Nintendo) then it would make sense. Now it is just more of the same with nothing new. They will most probably copy both these is the XBox 480 or something.

that mouse looks oddly like the center of an N64 controller.... just felt like pointing it out, and in my opinion the revolution will in the long run be better than the 360 or ps3.
