Iwata says Nintendo has built a bigger game population in three ways: Famicom Mini

Famicom Mini?? Anybody know anything about this? We can brood on this while waiting for Rev news.

Giant Wi-Fi logo on screen in background. Iwata says he will reveal much more on next-generation Wi-Fi this October.

I bet we don't hear about the controller until then either... :(

I think the idea is that the Game Boy Micro appeals to the casual gamer, as does Nintendogs (especially to women and children), and Mario appeals to everyone. Just the general idea that they are doing everything they can to make everyone a gamer.

Heh, yeah, I am watching the IGN cube feed to, as I was not the lucky editor to fly to Tokyo - stupid college courses :)

Iwata would need a pretty good reason not to reveal the controller now with the hype going on. Unless he has some way to raise even more hype for October, now would be the time to show it.

just thought of something, I wonder how long IGN had these "high-resolution pictures, hands on impressons, breakdowns, roundtables".... They would have had to have had it at least a day or so in advance.... oh well, just jealous I guess.

Revolution controller looks like futuristic television remote.
Glossy white design.
Looks Apple iPod inspired.
Controller is held in one hand. Attachments in the other.
Attachments connect to the bottom of the controller. Iwata shows analog stick attachment.
Thinking about packing Revolution with the main controller and attachment, Iwata says.
Controller acts like a mouse in real-space 3D. Pefect for FPS games!
Future attachments planned.

I'm pretty sure IGN, GameSpot, and most developers got a chance to see it early, but did the whole NDA thing. Yeah, this is exciting; I'll make a quick post as soon as any site (and I am refreshing about 5 different web sites here) have some info, and later our editor Vlad Cole will give his personal impressions of the event

Wow. This is exactly what I was thinking I'd market as a new controller for game consoles. Nintendo beat me to it.

Two-handed, separate, wireless controllers. Goddammit. If only I had millions of dollars to devote to filing patents... I wouldn't have to work for the man setting up FreeBSD servers all day! :-(

Too
Few
BUTTONS.

Unless you use the d-pad as multiple buttons, too few! Give us three or four on the controller. And give us an 8 way hat switch. Give us something! When playing an FPS, left hand moves you, right hand looks, one button shoots, one button switches weapons... and you're done. Reload? Use? I guess you can map them to the dpad, but that huge A could be three buttons across.

Anybody remember that big controller Microsoft came out with years ago, it was called Sidewinder DualStrike. It had a big ball in the middle and the you could tilt one side up, down, left and right. I played Slave Zero with it and it was the best, as good as a mouse. It was nice because you could sit back and play and not be hunched over a keyboard.

Here is a link I just found
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00002SX0B/103-9015168-8886260?v=glance

I wonder if Microsoft is kicking themselves for not developing this idea more.

Ha this is exactly what I predicted Nintendo would do for its Revolution and now I can finally say without a shadow of a doubt count me
OUT.

This is what was so Revolutionary, that it had to be kept soooooo confidential. Everybody can rest assured, Nintendo has def alienated themselves from the majority of third party developers with this controller. But hey for those of you who can live soley on Nintendo's first party games go right ahead.

This seals the deal though, Nintendo has officially commited themselves to third place from here on in (or the niche market) which ever makes you Nintendo fanboys happier. The goddamn controller looks like a freakin TV remote for christs sakes, and dont get me started on that little attachment for an analog stick. LOL.

too few buttons?!
when you can do all of your navigation based on the movement of the "remote" by pointing, then you only need 2 buttons: jump, and shoot. If you read gamespots hardware report on the controller, the demoes they go through show the multitude of ways you can use a controller with a few buttons and point-navigation.
Pay attention to how the analog stick attachment is used in the Metroid 2 demo they review. They didn't need any more buttons to control the game comfortably, the analog stick picked up all of the functionality they needed for visor/weapon switching, etc.
The controller may not be the "ON", but it definitely will be more fun than "Massive high-detail FPS shooter" for Xbox360/PS3. The mouse and keyboard will always win when it comes to that, but the Rev controller may prove me wrong.
