Revolution still just a "codename?"
Gamers Reports has made an interesting observation in the new
"Revolution" console photos. Despite them being white, the bottom also reveals that the name on the console has been
replaced by Nintendo where it once stood Revolution. At this point, I thought they were going to keep the name (like
they did with the Nintendo DS), but maybe it is still up in the air. At the press conference tonight, Iwata did refer
to the console as "codenamed Revolution" (thanks, Vlad).
What would you call it?
[Thanks, Brad]

hmmm ... snes, nes, n64 ... gc .... something with "Nintendo" lol i dont know ... Nintendo Free?
I hope they get good software support on this, I think it could crush other systems if they get the type of software support they had back in snes days, what do you think?
Buck Q. Fitch @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
I call it NintenDOA, as in Dead on Arrival. My snap judgement says that controller is junk.
Mark B @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Personally, I would call it Nintendo's last console. :-)
James @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
I like the name Revolution. It perfectly translates to what they are doing. Changeing everything about games that we are used to. What I don't get though is that if games do beter and better every year...well if the system ain't broke than why fix it? None the less I'm excited.
Lectoid @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
I know I keep posting this everywhere, and it's slightly off topic here, but I have two words...

wow, people are harsh..
im on no one's side, but whos knows...
nintendo revolutionized the gaming world by the 'd-pad.' then the comeback of the 'joystick.' then the 'rumble feature.' and then the evolved 'wireless controller.' all these features were VERY VERY successful. i have no doubts thier next gen 'revolution' will be successful as well.
FEEZY @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
oh, when looking at the comparison of the systems, it looks like the system is THINNER! haha cool. or maybe its just the picture.

change the shape and make it the Nintendo Dodecahedron!
Aero @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
The Nintendo Gametangle!
Cos it's a rectangle... and you can get all tangled up in it, cos it's such an immersive experience...
I know, you're all speechless from my suggestion. I am available for hire, Nintendo!
cl4rk3 @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Plus, the Revo doesn't even need to be successful in traditional terms (selling millions of units).
Nintendo is happy making a profit off of their minority market share while MS and Sony duke it out like fools.
Now when MS and Sony merge, then Nintendo might be standing around with some stinky britches.
JDH @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
How bout some names it wont be...
N360
Nintendo Station
GameStation
Nintendo NextGen
NintendoGen
The BigNintenDog
Game SkewedRectangle
Game Cube Advance (it isn't a cube!)
NGame
N3
Nintendo Joystiq

Nintangle would also work, now that I think of it. Oh yeah, I'm on a roll!

Catendo.
Wait, that's the name of their next game.
Nevermind.
OTAM @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
I thought about this yesterday.
Does anyone feel kinda crummy being so excited and only worrying about videogames when people in New Orleans are dying and have nothing?
I mean,if you thought of it that way,we would never do anything because hunger and war and suffering are going on everyday, but you understand what I mean.
I just feel kinda guilty spending $400+ on a 360 and PDZ when people down South have NOTHING,that's all :(
I donated to the red cross so that makes me feel a little bit better.
cl4rk3 @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Don't let guilt take you away from your American duty to be a consumer, OTAM.
By buying the Revo/360/PS3 you are putting more money into the American economy, (yes you are, think retail employees, warehousers, etc.) you are giving those people displaced by Katrina a better opportunity to find employment.
And the taxes generated by your participation in the economy will aid those in need as well.
Thank you.
Buy more!

Nintendo has come full circle with this system, and gone back to what makes gaming good: simplicity. Therefore, they should honor simplicity and their original system and call it Nintendo Entertainment System II. NES not only defined would gaming would become, but it came at the golden age of when Nintendo ruled supreme. Nintendo goes back to its roots with this system: defining what gaming will become, and such a basic but wonderful concept, it should put Nintendo ahead of the pack. THIS is the true successor to the NES, and why it should don the name that started it all.

John Bennet Ramsee @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
What they nreed is serious PC game developers to back the system, merge with sega and push the limits of gaming. Thats how to blast sony out of the water. Guess we will have to wait and see.
Slashbunny @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
This is not a gimmick. This is seriously the future of gaming. 3D mice? Who would have thought? I would never give up my keyboard and mouse for anything, but holy crap, the possibilties with this thing are amazing.
Could this do worse than GC? Unlikely. The best 3rd party support we've seen in years and unparalleled innovation. If GC was able to hang in 2nd with Xbox _AND_ remain profitable (unlike MS), I think Xbox360 might be MS' last console. Nintendo will do better than this generation and continue to be profitable.
John Bennet Ramsee @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
PC 3D mouse was out for PC before revolution was out. Only one person predicited that this would be the technology used.
kiddanger @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
at least it wasnt codenamed Dolphin
mkp @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
I say the pic as changed because, quit frankly, the Revolution logo looked stupid there.
Revolution as a final name, methinks.
Remember, as far as profits go, Nintendo is $200 M ahead of the rest...
Einhanderkiller @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Seriously, why are people calling this thing a flop just because of the controller?
We haven't even seen a damn game yet and some people are calling the nRev a flop...

With a lack of third party support for this gen and obvious continuing lack with this console, Nintendo will remain third place from here on in.
Sad thing is they have good ideas only they overhype and underdeliver. Im absolutely sure the next-generation of consoles after the PS3 and 360 will incorporate this so called Revolutionary movement in gaming. Only Sony and Microsoft will do it much better then Nintendo.
FEEZY @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Einhanderkiller... amen.
its seems like all of yall are jumping to conclusions.... DO NOT judge the book by its cover... seriously, it seems like racism is happening on game counsoles too... its just gotta stop.
i think you guys should rant and rave when you actually see games and play it.
BUT.... since these are opinions, i cant complain... just giving some thoughts, thats all.

I'm excited! This could be way fun and at the very least you've got the best game developer in the world working on it...
Bender @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
I'm excited about this console. My theory is that if they remove the name 'revolution' from the console then people may just go back to 'playing nintendo' like they did in the 90's.

its revo's controller teaser.
paralipsis @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Whatever they call it they better start pumping the millions into advertising, coz that controller is going to be a tough sell methinks.
I can't help but admit that I'm a tad disappointed at first sight, and I have been a buyer at launch for most of Nintendo's hardware. I think getting people excited is going to be an uphill battle.

I generally call it the N5, but occasionally the Revolution. I hate that name though, and am glad to see it's gone. It's an awesome codename, but terrible for a final product.
Pete @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Let's make some predictions, before the Joystiq reposting of the poll "Which Next-Gen System will you buy?"
Rank the systems thus far
(Personally)
1Sony PS3
2Nintendo Revo
3XBox 360
In recent set of news, the PS3 and Newtendo are shaping up nicely. PS3's new shots of MGS4 and DMC4 are breath taking and ironicly not pre-rendered (IN YOUR FANBOY FACE!) and the Revo's controller really brings everything together. Nintendo is the company with the cheapest console (concerned for our pockets), yet people treat them as if they should be ashamed of themselves? $200 console, probably cheap perhipherals (price, not quality), and reasonably priced games in a world of inflated nex-gen game costs; I am all for the Revolution and the PS3, I think the XBox360 will do well, but as it has been said, they are really more focused on this generation than the nex generation of gaming.
Jimmy Westberg @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
I'd like to call it "Welcome Home" - a product of Nintendo, Japan
Kevintendo @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
1. Overhype and underdeliver? Ha. Remember the emotion engine?
2. I care about fun, and money. And the more of both I have, the better I feel.
3. Please people. Let's see some footage, or demos or something before throwing stones!
4. Nintendo has and always will be about innovation. It's what keeps them, and tech-vultures alive. (Let's see. Cross-Pad - STOLEN. Microphone-STOLEN though reclaimed!. Force-Feedback and Control stick-STOLEN and shamelessly I might add and even in mid-gen. FOR SHAME SONY!! PUTTING TWO OF EACH ON YOUR CONTROLLER WITH A SUB_PAR RUBBER COATING THAT CAN TEAR OFF AND...well that thing at the end of Metal Gear SOlid was cool.
5. Nintendo Control Deck has that retro sound and a quaint definition. Cause this time we are indeed in control. No power pad for me thank you. Which was another grand idea stolen by Konami. But who had the first light gun?
Kevintendo @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Hey has annyone been to revolution.com yet? IRONIC
Why do peoplpe keep grabbing othe peoples ideas? Example? ok. Xbox360...hmmm..ok. Yahoo360, wha?! Dance 360, oh cmon. NASCAR 360, barrel scraping. ANDERSON COOPER 360! W. T. F!
And I do indeed hope there will be a name change, although I'm fairly sure there will be, considering "Revolution" is just another name for a 360. Congratulation Microsoft, or J. Allard, or whoever farted out that grand idea, whether it was to "fit in" with everyone else, like XP's eerie OSX similarities, you have made a name for yourself once again by squeezing into everyday language. "360" is not the new "X". That's what the X in xbox was for, dorks....NextBox was so bada$$ when i thought of it in 2002. WHY MS! WHY MUSN"T YOU HEED MY CALL!
Friedbean @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Did anyone else notice the style of the video clip being very similar to that nintendo on video. The 3D looks almost the same and the music sounds similar too. And would you put a video headset past a company that releases a controller like this?
1984 @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
have some imagination you guys. its going to be AWESOMEE!!!1!!!!!!!
Rocketboy @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
It will be the Nintendo 361, because just like the 360 is better than 3, this will be 1 more better.
Christopher7xii @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
"Seriously, why are people calling this thing a flop just because of the controller?"
Well, considering EA isn't making games for the Revolution, you can't make multi-platform games for the revolution(unless it uses 2 buttons), and the controller is ridiculously simple. I mean, you might say that controller have gotten too complex, but so have games. Each button is necessary to play the game. I think Nintendo didn't realize that the reason people hated the gamecube controller is because it was designed like ass, not because it had too many buttons. Also, why are people so clueless as to think that Nintendo can do no wrong, just because they've done a lot right.
Also, how are you going to game on your side? I mean, a lot of the time i'll play games laying down in bed. With the tilt sensors, is it always going to lean me to the left then?
Anyways, here's my take on the new name.
Virtual Boy 2
