High-res shots of Metal Gear Solid 4 now available online
Tired of grainy MGS4 scans from
Famitsu? Can't stand shaky bootleg video
getting in the way of your high-def enjoyment? Need something to tide you over until
the direct-feed trailer goes live on
the official web site? Well, have we got a site for you:
high-resolution screenshots of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots have been released by Konami, and you
can now find 1920x1080 pics on a Korean web
site called Ruliweb. And, er… yeah, that's Korean text, not Japanese there,
1UP.
Lower-resolution shots can also be found on Western sites like the aforementioned
1UP (as well as
IGN,
GameSpy, and
GameSpot), but we haven't seen 'em as
large as the ones that are currently being hosted in the
Land of the Morning Calm. (Darn bandwidth
hoarders!) So get yourself an eyeful of Snake's Solid Eye
System, and then let us know what you think of Snake's dental work when you get back. (Thank you, Kojima-san!)

Well, thats shown a lot hasnt it. Seems that the PS3 isnt the super power mega gaming gundam war machine people think it is. In fact, from what I can see, most of the textures are just cleverly painted to look 3D, much like curent gen. Now, I am not an xbox 360 fanboy (I have one pre ordered though), it seems that the PS3 cant even do AA at 1080. These just look like hi res MGS2 screens; the hair is very PS2, Otacons beard is just bump maping, the lightning is also very current gen.
To me this looks very MGS style, use many textures to create the look of a busy scene in order to fool the eyes.
To be honest I am not impressed.
SickNic @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Ouch! Teh Jaggies!
Seriously though, This game looks good, but where is the huge leap in graphical power the PS3 is supposted to have over the Xbox360? The godfather has better facial details... This coming generation is going to be real close (graphically wise)...
LINES @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Read more than just one line. Hideo said that this game is only about 10% into production. When the game is ready for shipping, and or way before then (Next E3) we'll see a HUGE leap in graphics.
Geez, scroll down a litlte bit more before you jump on the "ps3 sucks" bandwaggon.
shawn @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
They are spending millions of dollars developing a $400+ console, using the latest relevant technologies, and they still haven't figured out anti-aliasing yet!?!
Glenn @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Yeah - those jaggies are pretty bad. I hope those can be ironed out. If they can do that - it looks to be on par with PC DOOM 3 (which is a good thing). Besides those jaggies - I can't wait! In the meantime I'll have 360 to hold me over (hopefully without jaggies). Can you tell I hate jaggies?
Johan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Uhm, seriously, that looks like shit, atleast add some Anti-alising will you? The light (not the techniality, the "settings") and everything looks like shit.
2D side-scroller + Zelda/NES/Diablo/PC interface ftw :)
ROG27 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Are you all out of your flippin mind...have you seen the video (better quality) via ruliweb...I don't see any jaggies....your seeing a motion-captured screen blown way the f' up....it's pixilated...not so much jaggy. The video in motion is years way better than Gears of War.
Gears looks plasticy and fake with way too much normal-mapping for comfort...notice how the models are all bulky and blocky and mechanical/armored and lack hair modeling...Unreal 3 engine sucks ass. The games are generic looking and definitely not natural lookng.
ROG27 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
That is the reality of the situation...no need for denial X-tards...we know the release of this trailer ruined your day because now the best looking game on your console is yesterday's news.
Johan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Oh, I'm sorry if this is just very early shoots, but in that case, why show them? As I said they look like shit.
FEEZY @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
DUDES... the game is like 10% complete. haters gotta chill.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
LOL, the game is only 10% complete and already the game is in review. Wow. Just wow.
Hardware optimization is the last issue developers face.
Just like "sharpening" is the last photoshop adjustment that's done.
FEEZY @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
they needed to show SOMETHING cuz barely any games were showed at the tokyo game show
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Not to change the subject but the trailer for MGS3 substistence? is out and reveals it will be a 3 disc set. The third disc apparently holding 3 hours of MGS3 in game footage. I think They're just stringing all the cutscenes together and making a movie out of it. But I don't remember it being 3 hours worth.
It's on gametrailers.com
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
FYI, a better quality bootlegged version of the trailer is available at 1up.com.
The server is pretty fast, 600 kb/s for me. it's 120 MB. So look out.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Oh , when I mean better quality, I mean picture. The ambient noise drowns out any audio element to the trailer.
Glenn @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
"your seeing a motion-captured screen blown way the f' up"
No. Its a screen capture presented at actual resolution.
"The video in motion is years way better than Gears of War"
It's way better than NES games too. Invalid argument whether or not this looks good
"Unreal 3 engine sucks ass"
Please grow up.
"That is the reality of the situation...no need for denial X-tards...we know the release of this trailer ruined your day because now the best looking game on your console is yesterday's news."
You are so sad. First of all - for me personally - when I saw the trailer - I was REALLY excited. Seeing the screenshots brought me down a notch but I am still excited.
I don't know why you make this a 360 vs PS3 argument. It really kills any credibility you have. Just be a gamer and comment on the game itself.
Dan Choi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
ROG27, let's try to lay off use of "X-tards" in our comments, all right? It just invites people to respond in kind, and that just doesn't help any.
shawn @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Note: I was making NO comments on the game, I don't even like MGS games, and like everyone said this thing is way early. But anti-aliasing is a hardware issue, mostly, and those pictures are obviously not anti-aliased at all. Either the GPU calls for AA are too difficult to be put in yet (which would be ridiculously idiotic on Konami's part to release those pictures then), or the PS3 offers no or very little hardware AA, like the PS2. and the PS1.
Sharpizer @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I won't believe anything about 360 or PS3 graphics until I see it running on the console in my living room. Screenshots can look like crap or can look great, but we all know how often the retail game is always different.
I really want to know if the game will have a fruity intro song.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
"I really want to know if the game will have a fruity intro song."
Tell me about it, I hate that snake eater song. They should have just stuck with the Metal Gear theme. It would have been so much better.
MuddBoggr @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
This "game" is running on 2nd gen dev. kit at best. It is also at least a year from release.
Kojima-san they haven't been concentrating on the graphics yet, and they will get better.
Yet the fanboys are on here saying this looks like crap?
You guys need help.
FEEZY @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
i just saw a CLEAN CLEAN video of this game on Attack of the Show on G4..... WHAT JAGGIES?? the screens never do justice.
Glenn @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
"Kojima-san they haven't been concentrating on the graphics yet, and they will get better.

Sorry, I didn't realize your mom was working on this game and it would offend you if someone said anything negative about it. No one is commenting on how this game is going to look in a year from now which I'm sure will be better. They are commenting on how it looks now and right now there are too many jaggies.

I'l ignore the juvi stupidity about my mother (nice argument, BTW.) and say this:
In August of 2001, Bungie showed the press the first playable demos of a little game they were working on. The press saw a lot of potential but were not kind regarding some real frustrating frame rate issues. Perhaps you've heard of the game? It's called "Halo."
That one turned out to have it's issues cleaned up pretty well a year later, don't you think. And when Bungie pulled it off, they weren't nearly as experienced as the team working on this game is now. You think Kojima and the Konami team are going to just go have tea for the next 12 months? I wouldn't bet on it.
That's why expecting perfection, much less "late-task" processes like Anti-Aliasing at this point in a game's creation is just silly talk from people who don't understand a production schedule.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
"You think Kojima and the Konami team are going to just go have tea for the next 12 months? I wouldn't bet on it. "
Indulge me if you will... Imagine if that were to happen. The game will essentially consist of Snake hiding from a convoy, looking out the window, and have a brief encounter with a Cell processor equiped robot. At which point they try to leave the building only to have the PS3 crash due to insufficient data. Quickly after, the PS3 will explode into a fireball as it tries to divide by zero.
Game of the Year!

Yes, you do realize that the Unreal 3 Engine will be used on a plethora of PS3 games, right? You also must realize that Gears of War, like your prized MGS, is not finished yet.

Denial, eh? Look, the game will most likely be great, both in gameplay and in graphics, however judging it this early is ridiculous. If it's only 10% complete, I am extremly skeptic of the video. This early in development, making an in game footage trailer would be nearly impossible without a LOT of touch-up and prerendering. I expect this is more of a Madden-esque trailer (what they THINK the game will end up looking like). It may be accurate, I'm not saying it isn't, I'm just saying it's ridiculous to make comments such as "PS3 will rule the 360" this early in the game. All that said, here's a bit of info just to balance the scales of justice here:
The latest issue of GAME INFORMER claims that Sony has NOT required devs to use Anti-Aliasing (MS has- 4x AA). Sony also has NOT required HD resolutions (Sony will allow 480p in games in order for them to run faster). To me this is not good news for gamers (and the whole thing about needing to use 480p due to speed has me a little worried...). At any rate, like PS1 and PS2, the PS3 may not use AA, and definitley won't REQUIRE it like the 360 does. Another tidbit GI included was that Sony's expected Spring release may actually just be the Japanese launch, with the US getting it in the FALL of 2006...

Actually, if it follows Kojima's tradition, the final product will look even better than this trailer. If people remember, the early snake model of MGS3 was totally re-done for the final version. With better details of the character model.
I don't believe anyone here ever claimed that the PS3 > 360.
We are all just admiring Kojima's work done so far. I don't know what the big deal is.
Skullfire @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
The trailer looks great, there's no denying that, however no better or worse than any of the other big next-gen titles (i.e GoW, GR, PGR3, ...). I'm not sure why some people are getting so excited about it. Also, although it may be in-game footage, remember that this does not equate gameplay! Sorry, but it just doesn't get me sitting up the way others have done.
Heero Yuy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
You must remember though that the system and the game aren't finished.. so for all we know it could be even better looking then what we are allowed to see.. but what I really need to say is that we'll just have to wait and see
