Joystiq @ TGS: Satoru Iwata's keynote speech and presentation in English
Nintendo has posted a translation of the entire keynote speech given by Nintendo CEO Satoru
Iwata yesterday at Tokyo Game Show. Even the slides themselves have been translated to English. This is the
presentation that makes that crazy new Nintendo controller sound plausible, so if you haven't seen it, come have a
little Koolaid.
The link below includes the nifty video showing the controller in a variety of scenarios.
[Thanks for the tip, Karen]

Thanks for the link. I almost feel like I'm there in Japan!

'Tis worth a watch, that guy sure knows the gaming industry.

There is so much Iwata didn't bring up (and that's saying something). The potentials for this system and controller are amazing. How great it will be for FPS games has already been mentioned, but did anyone think of the potential for RPG games? Think of real-time battle. With the whole "brandishing the controller as a sword" I was imagine wiping out demons and trolls in a new Final Fantasy. This was what I thought would be REALLY cool:
Into fighting double-handed with two swords at once? No problem, just put a second controller into your other hand and slice and dice with both of them.
The Revolution and it's controller are the best things to happen to video games since the analog stick. Maybe they're the best thing to happen to video games EVER. This is going to sell like hotcakes. Really good hotcakes with crack in them.

After seeing the video of the controller in action, that is just amazing. At first i thought it was one of the goofiest looking things i had ever seen, and didnt seem very practical. It was easy to see how you would play NES and SNES games with it. I just cant believe how great that controller is now that I have seen the possiblities.
Steven @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Good thing I'm addicted to hotcakes AND crack.
lol
Seriously, I will be buying this as soon as it comes out. So hurry up Nintendo!
Steven @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
AND he's using a Powerbook! YES!
FEEZY @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
he made me feel more intrigued about the remote controller.
Darwin @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
He is so correct with the "expanding the market" strategy. I quit playing my ps2 coz' most of the games are too complex and at times frustrating. then i decided to jump in the bandwagon and buy a psp thinking playing "on the go" will re-ignite my gaming----but the lack of good games made me put that console on the shelf. then nintendogs came out, and my gf got a ds coz' she thinks its cute. thats when i discovered nintendo and its games. i bought my own ds and played advance wars, mario ds and astro boy (gba game). Now i can say im back in the hobby---and now a nintendo fanboy. i'll buy a gamecube soon..and i cant wait for the revolution!!! later sony.
Stefan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I dont understand how you'd be able to play snes games on that, using the remote sideways as a control pad gives only two buttons in the right position. What about N64 where some developers used to C-buttons as action commands? Now were four buttons down, were there potential shoulder buttons on it, I couldnt see? Dont get me wrong, I'm excited about the potential for new games on this and will DEFINATLEY buy one but I can't help seeing it as third party deveolper (and mainstream audience) poison. It'll be another case of nintendo inovating in gameplay beyond the hardcores wildest dreams while loosing more and more of the mainstream market. S

Nintendo have all bases covered.

nintendo just blew my mind.
jc @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I hear lots of people talking about seeing the new nintendo controller in action.
All I see are people waving the remote in the air, with no video game shots at all. Am I wrong, or did I skip over part of the presentation?? Has anyone actually seen any game shots yet?
vc @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
JC: there are no game shots.
mark @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
does anyone have a link to that footage of the revolution "helmet". I wana see what the kid had in his hand.
why? Night Walker's link hinted that there are more things to come.
Blue Balloon @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
after watch careful what Nintendo offer are AWESOME. It's most different way to play - sound fun to me!!
snortin_php @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I was actually thinking that I would not pick up a Revolution when it came out. I was holding back for a PS3 or XBOX360, but honestly after reading what I've read and seeing the controller.......I might just pick up a Revolution on the day of release.
WizarDru @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
People mean that they've seen illustrations of how the controller could be used, with very obvious and common scenarios for it.
Every action shown in the demo can be tied to a game: fishing games, FPS games, games like Fatal Frame, party games, Trauma Center, baseball games, beatmania games and more. That video shows conceptually how mind-blowing the revolutions controller could be. And given that we see illustrations of implementations in games that Nintendo has been releasing for years (zelda, mario, mario party, sports, etc.), none of these come across as far fetched. Nintendo's hardware design skills have never been in question, only their business decisions.
You also have to factor in that Nintendo's general success with implementation of this sort of thing. Pointing to the powerglove ignores all the successful innovations Nintendo's brought to the market before or since. They're not going to demo any games until they've got something worth showing. The brilliance of their work is that they're biding their time and getting maximum mileage out of this. If they had debuted this at E3, it would have barely registered. Now, it's THE story.
Frankly, I think this is going to work out like the DS. People will be boggled at first, then many will be skeptical; some will never cotton to it; then a killer app will arrive, and it will sell like hotcakes.
A lot has been made of the controllers lack of buttons....but honestly, how many buttons we need is an issue of the interface, not the controller. A lot of games are very lazy, IMHO, when it comes to controller layout. Many people have become tired of a game like MGS3, where you're pressing buttons and navigating camoflauge menus more than actually playing the dang game.
Now here's a thought: Tony Hawk using this controller. Hmmmm.......
Ghazi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Just one question:
Why cant they simply release the controller as a peripheral and games supporting it on the game cube if the controllers and the fun-games are the only concern, not next gen graphics or anything like that ? why make people buy a new console just for the controller.
You are gonna make new games for the new console right, just make them for the the cube and start selling the controller. saves a lot of money doesnt it.
but obv, due to money making reasons they wont do this. like i said earlier, the novelty will wear off quick... no need to buy a new console just for that bit.... probably other console makers will have similar things anyway as 30-50 dollar add ons instead of 200 dollar new consoles just for that....
vidGuy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
IGN has the teaser video available for download... trust me, you have to see this thing in action to understand what the talk is about: pictures don't do it justice!

why has everybody forgotten that back in february, sony introduced somethinig way coller. 3d control using the next gen eye toy without a frigging dvd player remote in your hand..... check it out :
http://www.gamespy.com/articles/584/584744p1.html
forgot to mention this in my earlier posts...
also, like i said before, like anything else, this too is a good peripheral and cool technology but not aropriate for constant control as can get tiring. however, buying a revolution just for the controller seeems absurd as sony introduced better technology 9 months ago..
make sure to read the whole article
Sendai @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
#18, the controllers are peripheral, dawg.

"Why cant they simply release the controller as a peripheral and games supporting it on the game cube if the controllers and the fun-games are the only concern, not next gen graphics or anything like that ? why make people buy a new console just for the controller."
Why do people buy consoles that only have marginally better graphics. Why doesn't MS and Sony focus on gameplay since it costs to produce games will just go up, thus net profits will decrease.
Ghazi, it's not just the controller either, it is the type of games that the controller and the revolution will foster.
P.S. The Nintendo Revolution is more powerful than the Gamecube, Nintendo didn's say that graphics aren't a concern, they just said that it is not what is going to propel the industry forward, and that they shouldn't focus on graphics.
