Minesweeper's back in Windows Vista (aka "Longhorn")!
Well, you knew they couldn't get rid of Minesweeper, so
it looks to be making another appearance
in Microsoft's in-development successor to Windows XP, Windows Vista (aka "Longhorn").
Yeah, you can ooh and ahh about all those glitzy
new titles they're previewing in Tokyo right now, but you
know which game still reigns supreme in schools and offices everywhere. (Er,
Solitaire or
Free Cell?)

So?

Gotta love those next-gen graphics.

Do the mine tiles exhibit dynamic lighting, variable alpha channels, prerendered animations, gratuitous particle effects, and/or dancing squirrels? If not, then why bother upgrading it at all? I'll take my less-distracting gray minefield to a blue gradient any day.

Solitaire for people too stupid to realize the genius of Minesweeper.

Why haven't they made this hex-based yet?
You figure it shouldn't be that hard.
I want full FMV explosions when you die. :)

Sean O., I had a very interesting discussion with a Minesweeper fanatic before about this. In the end with both games, you get good enough that you don't think about playing them at all--you have the strategic formulas down, and you just execute them. And after that, it's really just about randomly getting a puzzle that yields itself to efficient completion by a human. BTW, here's my Solitaire high score: http://solitaire.istheshit.net/ Beat that.

minesweaper = g.o.a.t.

I hope there will be new options in minesweeper, so that i'll be able to enhance my site: http://www.planet-minesweeper.com

I don't think Vista and Longhorn are the same thing. Vista is targeted at gamers, while Longhorn is lined up to be the mainstream successor to XP.
Lee @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Longhorn was Vista's codename KingOfHearts.

My mom loves Free Cell so they'd better soup it up with some nice graphics too. Personally, I'm a Solitaire man.

yep, if new winmineV has some new options, i will enhance my Minesweeper Arbiter ( http://minesweeper-community.com ) which can support such shiny skins. They just cast the shading effect to the unvisited cells and all other cell patterns are drawn over it (look at transparent flags)
