TGS 2005: Playstation 3 show-floor game trailers
If you've been hankering for some video footage from the floor of the Tokyo Game Show,
then you better stop, cos we got some footage for ya'. Joystiq reader Ghazi sent us a tip with video links from Korean
gaming site Ruliweb.com. As you can see from the shot above, they're not the
best quality (unless you like seeing the back of people's heads in the cinema).
Despite this, the three trailers are still very impressive. The one which most people will be excited about is the
Gran Turismo 5 trailer. It features some pretty awesome looking car models with extremely accurate reflections. There's
also a very decent looking 3D cockpit shot. Naturally there's a solo electric guitar soundtrack which will be perfect
for air guitar aficionados.
The other trailers we were sent the links to were Armored Core 4 and Warhawk. Armored Core 4 is a next-gen
continuation of the battle mech warfare world. In one shot a helicopter is blown up with a massive white beam ray,
which also takes out a building that happened to be in the way. The Warhawk demo gives the impression of being a
futuristic version of Microsoft's Crimson Skies game, except with hundreds instead of dozens of planes in the sky.
Check all three videos out at the links below:
TGS Video - Gran Turismo 5
TGS Video - Warhawk
TGS Video - Armored Core 4
[Thanks, Ghazi]

OMG I just had an erection right through my desk.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
LOL, DefJef.
Wow. If that shot of the RX-7 was truly rendered in real time on PS3 hardware. Then I'm totally impressed. I don't know why the companies don't release direct feeds.
Tesla @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
Speaking of direct feeds, can someone tell Hideo that he needs to offer downloadable trailers. These streaming things are killing me. I can never see a direct feed from Kojima Studios until they give it to some press company like IGN or Gamespot.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
tell me about it. Also, to use a non-proprietary format. I don't think it'll ever change as konami has always streamed wmv trailers off their site.
funkonaut @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
I HATE WMV!
There, I got that off my chest. What's wrong with mpeg?
Cem @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
Insanely beatiful videos, although I wonder whether it's possible to get these graphics ingame. And even if it would be possible, AI and physics are more important in gameplay terms.
J B Cougar @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
A picture is worth a thousand words, and now a well-rendered trailer is worth... well, what's a PS3's asking price up to these days anyway?
Tesla @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
funkonaut,
The problem with mpeg is this....size. While I prefer mpeg over wmv as much as you do, I would prefer divx even more. Divx is highly compressed but with the least amount of lost detail. Unfortunately most gaming related sites post in either wmv or mov (Microsoft and Apple respectively), both which I'm not much a fan of. The industry should learn that most of us who are on the web looking at games have the divx codec.
Xbox360BossMan (Dmitri) @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
Jesus christ! That warhawk game looks like a hell of alot of fun.
The detail on the AC4 video looks just incredible.
Wish I could say the same about the GT5 trailer. It looks very detailed and all, but portions of the video look alot like GT4 when it comes to graphics.
Xbox360BossMan (Dmitri) @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
Can't we all just stream with realplayer?
Ahahaha just kidding.
tack @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
"The Warhawk demo gives the impression of being a futuristic version of Microsoft’s Crimson Skies game"
Or more accurately, it looks like an updated version of the terrific original PSX game from 96.
Vagabond Artist @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
warhawk... *drool*
I still remember buying warhawk for the PS1 and suffering through the atrocious movie clips between missions.
all these next-gen game trailers are going to make holding out more difficult :(
(trying not to be a first adopter this time)
Jeremy Wright @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
IF (and there's no way I think this is possible) the GT shots were anywhere near possible on the PS3, I'd be buying a PS3 hands down.
Yes, it's about gameplay, but side-by-side, that would make the 360 look like a kiddie toy.
And, yes, I'm a total Xbox nut. But if those graphics happened, I'd buy a PS3 as well in a heartbeat.
Spartacus @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
I for one am ready to see some actual GAMEPLAY videos. All this prerendered hype is getting old, not only from Sony, but they seem to be doing the most. I guess I can't blame them, they have a system that isn't finalized and is probably a year away from release in the States (GameInformer claims a fall '06 release is likely), so they have to release something to steal Microsoft's thunder.
Not Impressed (Dmitri) @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
So, Spartacus, your sick of something you find understandable?
Sanitarium @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
Woah, slightly enhanced graphics!!!!! The future is
here my friends, this truly defines "Next Generation". I can't wait to see
how much of a noticeable difference there is between GT4 and GT5!!!
Imagine all the new features that game will have, like a few new cars and
..... and...... and slightly better graphics!!!! This really pwns the
slightly better graphics of the xbox 360!!!!
Spartacus @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
What I'm sick of is expectations that won't be met in actual gameplay. What I'm sick of is people claiming the PS3 will have the best graphics when all we've seen are prerendered videos and cutscenes. Is that so bad?
J B Cougar @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
No, it's not so bad. You'd be right, seeing as the same thing happened with PS2 and XBox. What are they hiding? Hmm, could it be it's just more of the PSP-effect? Explainer: PSP effect is when an over-hyped new system debuts and relies on the strength of last year's old, ported titles to sustain the hype and then fizzles out to the point where UMB 'combo packs' featuring Wipeout and Stealth are launched to bring people back in.
B @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
These look great. Can't wait for the PS3.
Now, can we please stop with all the posts declaring the PS3 as so much better than the 360. How about waiting until the systems are out and actually making an informed decision based on playing games from each system.
So far I have had the pleasure of hearing about the Xbox 360's slightly improved graphics, Nintendo's controller that is either going to revolutionize the industry or miserably and PS3's on again of again rendered graphics. What it equates to is a bunch of people that haven't played any of these games and yet talk out of their arse because of some system allegiance. I will happily own all three next gen consoles. The ultimate kryptonite against the videogame fanboy.
Arch-360 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
have oyu plople not seen the trailer? the game looks nothing liek that. PGR3 looks betetr. and then GT6 wil look better than that, and then PGR4 will look better than that. etc.
IMHO the warhawk trailer is nothing special at all. it hardly even passes for next gen besides the water.
honetsly the PS3 is looking worse than what was shown at E3 everyday
J B Cougar @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
"The ultimate kryptonite against the videogame fanboy."
Funny, I thought that was posting responses after their 10 p.m. 'computer time' curfew, thus making it impossible for them to respond in due time.
Anyway, I think talking about rendered vs. actual gameplay is a good point, seeing as it has happened in the past and let people down. What's that saying? Fool me once...
Mariofan14 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
WOW!!! I didn't know PGR3 looked that much better than GT5!!!
Chris K @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
GT5 looks pretty good, but it doesn't look a lot better than GT4 IMHO. Sure, there's some more polygons on the cars, but nothing that really jumps out at me and screams BUY ME. In fact, what would it take for a next-gen driving sim to impress graphically? Hmmm...
Real-time dynamic shadowing? Shadows cast from bridges and other cars... shadows moving with the angle of the car.
Track debris? Bits 'o car, tire pick-up, marbles, dirt/grass/etc dragged from off-track excursions. Crap on the windshield and car.
Fully-markable environment? Tire marks on rumble strips and the road. Dug-up grass/dirt. Paint on the walls (like Forza). And not just YOUR car, or limited lifetime stuff. I want to see an abused-looking track after a 30-lap sprint race!
Bigger grids? Six cars is silly, and disqualifies GT as a "racing" sim IMHO. Likewise for Forza. Give us grids of at LEAST a dozen cars. Preferably 20-30. I don't care how hard it is to develop, you want us to buy these supposed ubermachines for $500+? Put your money where your mouth is!
Cockpit view? I'm not talking a simple frame around my screen, either. I want fully working gauges and controls. I want to look down and see my tach through my steering wheel. I want to see the coolant temp gauge climb after I blocked my radiators while plowing off track. None of this disembodied tach crap we've been fed from GT1-GT4.
AI. Sorry, this is not an appearance thing, but GT has the WORST AI I have seen in a driving game in years. Twisted Metal was better. TOCA Race Driver 2 is AGES better. Forza is better. Cut the crap, Sony. We want opponents, not slot cars that abuse us so much we HAVE to outclass them to avoid being shoved off track!
I have EXTREMELY high expectations for GT5 and what will likely be a Forza2. Being a pessimist, however, I would not be surprised if we instead simply get a damage model and cheesy online Pokemon mode for GT5, and more cars for Forza2. I doubt either game will really advance the genre much at all. GT and Madden has proven that people will spend for minor updates.
thetrash @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
Warhawk looks great. Especially the giant human heads at the bottom. They just look so real.
Wipeout @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
Do a Google for 'GetASFStream'. You can save the stream with it.
Spartacus @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
Chris K:
You seemed to describe Project Gotham Racing 3 almost perfectly... Sounds like you need an XBOX 360, lol.
LuckyKnight @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
I'm so glad other people are mentioning the fact these graphics are pre-rendered. nVidia haven't even finished designing the GPU! Developers don't even have a development kit yet.
People jump on the hype bandwagon as Sony make these beautiful pre-rendered scenes on rendering farms - only to be disapointed in the actual product.
Roll on more gameplay footage! Then we will get a better understanding of PS3 vs Xbox 360.
Kevin @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
Who's Lying?
It never ceases to amaze me how this issue remains so misunderstood among so many people.
Many games in development use pre-rendered footage to help plan the look of a game before jumping to the game engine, and eventually gameplay.
When a console launches it is common to have to sort through the examples of what was actually realtime (past examples: ps2, xbox, gamecube). However, regarding PS3, there are a number of credible sources showing off realtime footage that should be obvious to everyone by now. Fight night round 3, Lair, Gundam, e3 Unreal Engine 3 demo, FF7 demo and Guns of the Patriots have all proven to be running on the early development hardware that has been shipping for months. If there was any smoke and mirrors going on here it would be these companies themselves making the false videos, not Sony.
It will take longer to see a next-gen game in playable form then to see a realtime cinematic. However, as graphical showcases these realtime rendered cinematic’s show what we will be seeing in the next generation.
Perfeitoan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
XBox 360 was already born to be second place and it will always be
PS3 for those that want finishes her word in technology the best in everything.
