Industry reaction to the
Nintendo's Revolution-ary new controller has been both
enthusiastic and laced with
gloom and
doom. Since we've had a look at
the industry reaction to Microsoft's dual-price strategy
for the Western release of the Xbox 360, it only makes sense that we get
a repeat
reaction (to the real Revolution in Nintendo's mass-market plans) with thoughts from developers, the gaming media,
and even one analyst to boot.
Signs clearly pointed (in hindsight) to what features would eventually be included as far back as March
(a customizable controller) and May
(a remote interface) of this year, but we're only now
beginning to deal with the fallout of Mario's new mainstream ride. Michel Ancel's "just mad about it" [in a good way],
while Lorne Lanning hopes a larger version will be made available for "the larger hand endowed." One designer from
Radical Entertainment referred to the controller as "casual gamer paradise," while the singular analyst from DFC
Intelligence was concerned it would "appeal mainly to an enthusiast crowd and alienate the mass market."
Make of these opinions what you will, but it's nice to know the big industry players are just as divided on the remote
wonder as we are. For a longer analysis on Nintendo's genre-innovation strategy, check out Danc's own extended
developer-thoughts article here.
