Time to put put a little funk in the trunk of your PSP. Rockstar's figgin to release a UMD-only
movie entitled Sunday Driver (rated R for language—shocking!) about lowriders.
"Our goal was to create a film with the same cutting edge, uncompromising cinematic content that we strive for in our games. We are extremely proud of Sunday Driver as an evolution of the Rockstar brand into film," said Rockstar President Sam Houser, according to 1UP.
There's not a lot of information available about the movie yet, but we're betting that it takes a ghetto-fabulous, "real" look at lowrider culture of Compton, California in a way that creates demand for a game based on lowriders. And synergy of synergies, we're also willing to bet that Rockstar will announce a game based loosely on the documentary shortly thereafter (if the UMD sells well).
This is a savvy move for a number of reasons. What we like most about this is that it might ease some of the pressure on makers of edgy game content. If Rockstar can get more of their critics to see them as a film company, their game products might start to be judged by the same measure as films. Right now game content is exposed to intense scrutiny while the film industry pumps out the same content with impunity.
