Is there any way to take out articles that are just about "Xbox" or "PlayStation" or even "Nintendo"? I could see a few of those getting in the way.

Those Microsoft and Nintendo prefixes could skew the results for the 360 and Revolution as well. (What, no Sony prefix for the PS3?) But I suppose those are the vagaries of Googlefight. =) Here's what I got when searching for just "Xbox 360" vs. "PlayStation 3":

Xbox 360: 42,800,000 results
PlayStation 3: 52,500,000 results

Even Google search results are in the eye of the beholder! Too bad "Revolution controller" didn't do much for Nintendo's numbers:

Revolution controller: 6,600,000 results

Dan -- you have to quote your terms or the fight isn't right. You got 50 million PS3 results because you didn't quote "PlayStation 3." When you do that, you get results for three terms:

1. playstation 3
2. playstation
3. 3 (tossed because it's too common)

Retro: put it in quotes and you end up with far fewer results for the NR.

For yet another perspective, I googlefought the following terms...

microsoft "xbox 360"
sony "playstation 3"
nintendo revolution

...figuring that any respectable article mentioning a next-gen console would also include the name of its parent company somewhere along the line. The resultant results resulted:

Xbox 360: 11,500,000
PlayStation 3: 13,800,000
Revolution: 14,100,000

Why the disparities? Only Tyler knows. The second rule of Project Mayhem is you do not ask questions.

Striegs -- you're not using quotes the right way. If you want to do that, you need to format it like so:

+microsoft +"xbox 360"
+sony +"playstation 3"
+nintendo +revolution

vc: He's talking about googlefight.com, not actual googling. In quotes on an actual Google query, you are right. But, this entire article is about Googlefight. :P

this is a much better way to gauge the popularity of things.

Google's zeitgeist measures a different aspect of "popularity." It doesn't matter if "Vladimir Cole" was the single most popular search online if the results came up empty.

Popularity is a function of search terms AND fan sites extant.

I love it: blog site posts completely irrelevant "news" on netxt-gen google ranking, then the nerds argue about whether it's news or not, boosting the google ranking of the blog that's been shoveling coal on the hype engine in the first place. All we need to do now is make this a reality TV show.

Still, the guy's got a point, Vlad. Microsoft could put up promotional Xbox 360 sites to their heart's content, yet it doesn't make a lick of difference if nobody cares enough to search for it.

Then again, Google's Zeitgeist is far too vague to be used as an accurate reference. There's no doubt that Revolution searches skyrocketed in light of TGS, but that doesn't mean that Revolution queries surpass 360 or PS3 levels.

In either case, it becomes apparent that vague search engine data is hardly a conclusive resource. Now, if we had unrestricted access to Google's search logs...

Choosing the name : Microsoft Xbox 360 is too vague.

Imagine how popular MS is (For their OS mostly) now incorporate that into the search engine.

Also some of these results are fairly innacurate.

When I looked up PS3 on plain google I got 49,100,000 results as opposed to this where there is half the amount.

Who really cares what's more popular anyways. Buy what you want.

Actually, Zeitgeist IS an accurate measurement, because it doesn't run on percentages, but actual # of searches. PS3 and 360 weren't even on the list, nor were any of its games.
But we'll see based on month-end statistics, which measure total searches of all relevant game-related queries within the month and show which has been searched the most.

Well, Vlad, if you wanted me to search with the quotes "on," then you should've said so in the original post! =) Okay, so here's what I get with the exact terms listed (so string queries are "quoted" below):

"Xbox 360": 41,500,000 results
"PlayStation 3": 31,000,000 results

Well, the 360's back in charge now, but searching for "Revolution controller" only pulls in 2,630,000 results this time. Ouch.

...Ready? Fiiiiiiiight!!

considering that the 360 is coming out SOOON, the competition aint real. it would be real if all the systems were to come out around the same time. dont feel like how this will affect the results cuz im playing right now but you'll get it, if you are SMART enough.

googlefight.com is displaying all the wrong number when compare to google.com
Here is another website that do the same accurate job.
http://www.googlebattle.com/
Playstation 3 has 49,200,000 results
Xbox 360 has 34,500,000 results

Both of those numbers are the same when i try it at google.com

I remembered long time ago there is another website call googlewar.com but now no longer exist

Wow. This may be the most fascinating article I have ever seen. It was my original intent to buy all 3 machines, but now I'll only buy whichever one wins Googlefight.

Top 15 Gaining Queries: Week Ending September 19, 2005

From googles Zeitgist

The Revolution is #4 on that list. No other gaming stuff is there.

The reason X360 is "Crushing" the googlefight competition is simple - a machine that launches in 2 months will have more people talking about it than one without a release date.

And that may not even be true in a few weeks if Nintendo says something else about the Revolution to keep hype rising.
