A casual visit to GameTab
the other day revealed that the reviews and news compilation site was now under the Ziff Davis umbrella of online game
portals, which already includes the web presences of ZD print publications Electronic
Gaming Monthly, Official PlayStation Magazine, and
Computer Gaming World.
An article on Gamasutra (which was,
incidentally, not found via the GameTab site) confirmed the latest aggregating acquisition under the growing 1UP
network label. The Ziff Davis Media's Game Group
lost $1.2 million for the second quarter,
mainly due to the discontinuation of GMR magazine (which had been tied in with discount memberships at EB
Games) and "a reduction in the frequency" of Xbox Nation. Bringing GameTab into the fold may increase ad
revenues, as well as enable 1UP to better compete against its major rivals IGN/GameSpy (which owns Rotten Tomatoes, and
was recently bought up by News Corp.) and GameSpot (which
apparently owns GameRankings and MetaCritic).
