David Jaffe (most recently served as game director and lead designer on uberhit God of
War) answers questions put to him by Edge Magazine.
Edge manages to ask him 20 questions without eliciting much of interest from the man, but he did make an interesting comment on why better graphics are important for gaming. According to Jaffe:
"Better graphics means more game players. Doesn't mean the games will be better (I hope they will) but it means that as the graphics look more and more impressive, more and more mainstreamers join the fray…"
Is this the missing secret ingredient to growing the gaming market? If so, Nintendo's got it all wrong. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata (who lists graphics last on the list of issues for non-core gamers) would list gameplay and innovative controller schemes as far more important than better graphical fidelity.
