Dead or Alive 4 creator says Xbox 360 "best on earth"
Tomonobu Itagaki of Team Ninja told his interviewers at Tokyo Game Show that he thinks "Xbox 360 is the
best game console on the earth. It's better than PlayStation 3."
Why? "PS3 has too complicated of architecture."
Team Ninja is currently developing games for the Nintendo DS, Sony PSP and Xbox 360. They've also created games for the Xbox and PlayStation 2, which lends this statement an air of credibility.
That said, he still feels that Microsoft's new console isn't as powerful as he'd like them it to be. He noted, "I never felt that I had enough machine power. The more power I get the more I want to do. Even with Xbox 360 there's never enough."

That is some royal pwnage right there.

this guy less credibility than the other guy from Sony, who said DS was a gimmick.
Splash @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
DOA3 was one of the best games I played on the Xbox and DOA4 looks even better. This is one launch title that I'm definately going to buy.
Nice job Team Ninja!
eric @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Tomonobu Itagaki is the coolest developer hands down.
Can't wait to see he pushes the 360
Matt @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Is it just me, or does DOA4 look exactly like DOA3..?
Be warned, the fanboys travel in packs.
Tetra @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I think Virtua Fighter 4 and Tekken 5 absolutely destroy Dead or Alive 3 on every practical level but absolutely love Ninja Gaiden and can't wait for its sequel on the 360.
Itagaki has always been kind of a blowhard, like just about every great and crazy developer. Kojima saying the same thing about the PS3 wouldn't surprise me either. It's not like they don't have their own interest in selling the systems - the more consoles sold, the more money they make with their exclusives.
Glenn @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
"Is it just me, or does DOA4 look exactly like DOA3..?"
I've played DOA3 on a 60" LCD and watched DOA4 on a 50" Plasma - It is just you - DOA4 looks WAY WAY WAY better.
" think Virtua Fighter 4 and Tekken 5 absolutely destroy Dead or Alive 3 on every practical level "
Even graphics? No way. First off, I think Tekken is unplayable garbage (I understand many would disagree). VF4 is an amazing game, but where DOA3 excels is in party gaming. 4 people who dont know what they're doing can sit down, mash some buttons, and have a great time.
Not Impressed (Dmitri) @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Its fucking obvious that retard is going to say that. He helped make an Xbox360 exclusive game. All he wants to do is get sales for it, no matter how retarded it is.
Tetra @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
"Even graphics? No way."
Absolutely. Balancing out stylistic and technical considerations, DOA3's polygon pushing doesn't push it over the top of what I consider to be the far more appealing styles of the aforementioned games. Of course, that's highly subjective, so we're bound to disagree. I just wanted to point out that there's more to consider than just level of detail. Who wants the world's most finely crafted milk carton, ya' know?
"First off, I think Tekken is unplayable garbage (I understand many would disagree)."
Well, uh, have fun not playing it.
"VF4 is an amazing game, but where DOA3 excels is in party gaming. 4 people who dont know what they're doing can sit down, mash some buttons, and have a great time."
The game is in one the XBoxes (Boxen?) at my student union and it's rarely played by anyone other than people already familiar with fighting games. Really, anyone who has played Street Fighter or Soul Calibur (99.9% of even the gaming community, I gather) can get the hang of every modern fighter in seconds. Sure, they might not be blocking and comboing like pros, but that stuff is arguably just as important in DOA3 as in VF4 on a systemic level. For casual gamers, you can ignore that easily with both games.
DOA4 won't sell me on a 360. In fact, the only fighting game that could would be Super Smash Brothers. Hmmm.
Mark B @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Tomonobu Itagaki of Team Ninja is totally full of shit for thinking the 360 will be better than the PS3. Just wait and see.
No fanboy here. I own both the PS2 and XBOX.
And to the person who said that Tekken is unplayable garbage, do you have Tekken 5? Have you even played Tekken 5? IT ROCKS!!
Azerael @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Owning the Xbox doesn't stop you from being a Fanboy.
Tekken 5 would be better if didn't look like you were playing Super Mario Bros.
ROG27 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
This guy never said XBOX360 was more powerful than PS3...he just said basically he is too incompetant (or lazy) to work with and learn a drastically new archticture, no matter how much more you can get from it.
Mark B @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Azerael,
Are you stoned or just ignorant?
Boomhauer @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I never felt that I had enough machine power. The more power I get the more I want to do. Even with Xbox 360 theres never enough.
He is saying that he never can have enough power (he'll always want more). This is different from saying that the 360 is weak.
Also, he never said that the PS3 isn't more powerful, anyone but the most diehard MS fanboy knows Sony's console has more muscle.
metal_gear_jello @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Pfft! Like dmitri said, he's garnering hype so people will get the console in order to buy his game.
You know, people said the PS2 platform was complicated, did that stop the developers? Nope. His comments are baseless.
Jeff @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Awesome.
Maybe now the stuck up asshole will make something good.
damoun @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
all I have to say is take note of the following point:
(dead or alive 4 looks very much like its Xbox
iterations, and note that the previews we saw at TGS were all running on final Xbox360 dev kits.
now compare that to MGS4 which was running on alpha version PS3 dev kits.)
now you realize that this guy is one f**king
idiot. please joystiq do not make an ass out of your seleves by posting the comments of the team ninja clown. comments such as these (and thier current work "dead or alive 4") clearly indicates the incompetence of team ninja.
Ghazi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Did you see xbox-only crowd reaction to Hideos joke ? that was just cheap marketing paid by sony.. but ofcourse mister team ninja is absolutely accurate and true hahhahaa..
the onyl people finding ps3 complicated are those who cant think outside the box ...
Dralt @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Itagaki is not smart enough to leverage the potential offered by PS3.
It's fair of him to admit it.
For those who don't have the brains, it's better to stick to single-threaded programming and DirectX.
OTAM @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I love it,I do.
He says 360 is the best machine on earth because maybe he actually DOES think that and has a passion for this series and everyone replies with putdowns?
But then if Hideo Kojima says the PS3 is the best on earth and Metal Gear Solid 4 will destroy everything, everyone believes and rallies behind him?
Please, someone explain this to me,i'm lost.
Maybe when the 360 comes out i'll be happy when narrow-minded idiots give the console the credit it deserves.
Also,in my own opinion after playing these games,Dead or Alive I think is the best fighting series. Virtua Fighter is too overly complicated and Soul Calibur is too easy to button mash, whereas Dead or Alive finds a nice medium. That's just what I think though, obviously it will differ from you.
Pretty Obvious @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Itagaki has been known to switch development on systems because of power, he did so from the PS2 to the Xbox.
If he says that the 360 is a better system, I would take his word for it. Like the PS2, the PS3 will be somewhat of a development hell and it will take time for developers to get a feel for things. Meanwhile Sony will hype up its graphics and show you guys fancy realtime trailers that are NEVER gonna happen in actual gameplay.
elmer @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
This man is always going on about how he and his team are the best programmers on earth.
I would have thought a person as arrogant as he is would jump at the chance of a real challenge like the PS3.
BTW. to the casual observer, DOA3 looks almost the same as DOA2 (really a testemant to the excellence of DOA2).
LINES @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Awesome, microsoft paid some good cash for this.
Jordan R @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
The DOA4 trailer is impressive, specially the wrestling stage. But I don't see it as a next-gen upgrade (admit-tingly, not a big fan of fighting games).
Photos of DOA look great, but the animation is far from acceptable. At this point, I expected the imperfections and randomness of human motion to make its grand appearance.
When you punch someone, the opponent should not react the exact same way twice. When you kick, your leg should tremble as your character experiences fatigue.
MGS4 had lousy textures, but its brilliant animation made up for it and then some! You got the feeling great graphics is no longer a means-to-itself, but instead just a background tool to express reality.
The "dancing woman" animation on the DOA4 wrestling level had that same brilliance... truly wonderful. Too bad it was not present in the actual fighting game play.
Ironically, I think the revolution will have the best graphics for the first year. Then xbox360 for 2007, and finally, PS3 for 2008-2012. Progress is hard!
Nossy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
He never said XBOX360 was more powerful than the PS3, he just said it was the best system. Man he just got Sony/Nintendo fanboys all steamy LOL. XBOX360 will be a great system, If you ignore it, you'll be missing out. According to Rumble Rose XX Akari Uchida, the PS3 offers more rendering and shading passes, from the interview at www.teamxbox.com.
Take2 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I'm not sure how you can compare an animation for MGS4 against actual game play for DOA4. People, people, people, we're seeing technical demos for the PS3 not real in-game play yet. Be patient, it'll appear. I'm thinking the first gameplay will appear either late this year or early next year. The final dev kits for the PS3 won't ship til December.
As for screenshots of DOA3 vs DOA4, they're much improved. A quick check at Gamespot will confirm that. DOA3 is a pretty old game, but still one of the better fight games around if you like that sorta thing.
Glenn @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
"dead or alive 4 looks very much like its Xbox

"We saw" at TGS? Who is we? Were you there? I wasn't. I *was* at E3 and I will tell you... DOA4 (not even running on a 360 yet) easily looked a generation above DOA3. I hate to break this to you, but you're going to have to get your parents to upgrade your 19" analog TV if you really want to notice the difference between the last gen and the one coming up.
"now compare that to MGS4 which was running on alpha version PS3 dev kits.)

If a little 240x320 shaky cam movie of an in-game cutscene on the web is what you're basing your opinion on... who's the idiot? I was excited as hell too when I saw that movie, but the full res screenshots brought me back to earth.
"comments such as these (and thier current work "dead or alive 4") clearly indicates the incompetence of team ninja."
Yes, the team creating the best graphics of the last generation are clearly incompetent.
ROG27 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
yeah when i saw the full res shots of mgs4...i realized I was an idiot for thinking the shaky cam looked good...I realized I should watch it on G4 to see it in most of it's glory! (still not HD but good enough)
It's more beautiful than anything ever produced on any video game console or pc ever...

Team Ninja debuted the original DOA on the Sega Saturn ultilizing dual Hitachi SH-2 processors.

If you want to see the full MGS4 presentation in crystal-clear video, tune in to Cinematech on G4 TV tonight at 8:30 Eastern Time, (5:30 Pacific) they will be showing the entire nine minute MGS4 presentation, uncut.
I saw it the first time they showed it. It is amazing when you see it without handcam shakes or crappy internet video compression.

"#31 God of War has the best graphics of this generation, followed by Resident Evil 4 for the lowly GameCube. (Not sarcastic-i own one and only have played 4 games on it)"
I have do disagree. I own and beat God Of War on my 55" 3LCD. I own and beat RE4 on my 60" 3LCD. While they are both amazing looking games, I would have to say DOA4, DOA BV, Ninja Gaiden, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and F-Zero DX are better looking. Perhaps this changes on an analog TV

"I saw it the first time they showed it. It is amazing when you see it without handcam shakes or crappy internet video compression."
Again, I thought it was amazing even with the shakes and compression. No matter what it looks like on G4TV (which is in 4:3 non-HD anyways) the 1080 x 1920 screenshots say a lot. Don't misunderstand though - I can't wait for MGS4!!!
Joel @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Glenn:
I think I understand what you are saying. I just wanted to let you know that if you did want to see it, G4TV is showing it uncut tonight.
I find it amazing that it'll look even better in full-on HD when it is released, too.
ill trooper @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
So TeamNinja is having a better time bringing their vision to XBox360. And some of you like it. That doesn't make TeamNinja idiots or others idiots for liking it.
This site is filled with trigger-happy fans calling another video game enthusiast who watched a quicktime or even a DEVELOPER a 'fucking idiot' if it's not your thing. What do you do #22? Brain Surgery while piloting the rocket? And forgive me for taking the liberty of correcting your unique spelling of 'yourselves' here: "Joystiq don't make an ass of yourselves by posting the comments of the team ninja clown." Are you kidding? Why blame CNN when Bush says "You're doing a heck of a job" to Michael Brown of FEMA?
damoun @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Glenn , please don't make a fool out of yourself by going on about how good DOA4 is,
if you want a real next generation fighting game then look out for (Fight Night Round 3) from EA.
Questworld @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I personally think that the difference in DOA4 from DOA3 isn't that big in regards to graphics. The reason for this of course is the same as the reason for not comparing DOA4 to MGS4: DOA's art style is based more around anime and less around real world images. I doubt you'll see wrinkles or realistic facial models in DOA. Having said that, I don't know what Itagaki needs more power for. Surely MGS4 can look just as good on the 360, and even on the Revolution, if Kojima made that kind of effort on those systems.
Ramm @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Well, for some of you fan favs on here, favortism is really an issue. When you talk about which fighting series is the best, you really have to be realistic. Soul Calibur is the best fighting series in the market right, seriously, and there are only what, 3 games, and Soul Blade. But can't forget about your roots thought. I still love Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter because they were a new beginning and opened a LOT of doors. As far a DOA, it's officially to me the most exciting fighting series. It's very fun to play the game when you have like 3-6 people at your house and you sit there competing without taking it seriously and releasing stress for games like Virtua Fighter and Tekken, where as for DOA your mouth is usually wide open and your just enjoying the gameplay, let alone the busty figures (which is really pathetic to me).
Andreas SJ @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
No idea what you're getting your panties all wound up about. Itagaki has proven himself x number of times already, he doesnt need you to believe him or take him seriously or whatever, his work speaks for itself.
The DOA sucks Tekken rocks debate is like debating liquorice vs chocolate. Grow up.
And you guys with the knowhow, please, tell me how many people on this planet program multithread confidently, and tell me how easy it is to debug large multithreaded applications. Please. Oh and while you're at it, describe to me the economic viability of spending ages programming for a complex architecture, then spending the same ages RE-DOING your structure for less complex systems so you can cash in on portability. I'm all up on the PS3, but if the PSP is an indication, Sony has issues with their role as a games hardware developer.
Btw i'm a gaming geek of the highest order, and i'm not proud. I own every console platform ever made since the SNES, and i've spent more money on games than i've spent on food. I'm the quintessential unbiased gamer, but i am a GAMER first and foremost. Not some wackjob retard thinking i know whats up with game development, giving myself the right to go after guys like Itagaki. If Itagaki says he prefers a traditional architecture because it allows his team to develop confidently, what's the problem? He thinks so! You're going to debate him? Why?
Itagaki is what Itagaki is. Deal with it.
