PSP 2.0 cracked, homebrew to follow
Some clever fellow has managed to figure out a
buffer overflow condition for Sony's
PlayStation Portable device. This means that programmers can now create and run custom programs on the PSP, opening up
the potential for unofficial applications to run homebrewed games, custom applications and even pirated games.
Homebrew for PSPs running version 2.0 is still a ways off, but this was an important step in making the device hospitable to homebrew gaming.

Screw that, I made this mock up of the Ipod Video and I would rather have that than some cracked PSP.
XyTec @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
because you made it?

2.0 ownerz, welcome aboard. I am sure as soon as they rape this exploit it will be time for me to make the switch from 1.5 FUBAR is what the sony 2.0 firmware will be after these guys get a hold of it. Awsome, thats all I can say!
Rhine @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Something made by a human will usually have a hole you can exploit good news for you PSP folk bad news for the those who bought a second one lol
funkyflea @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Zing...
Just a brown screen right now guys. Let's see what happens...
WickedP @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
All I see is a buffer overflow error...no one has cracked the encryption key that is needed to actual run code.
What's that smell in the distance?! Oh, I know...it version 2.01. :)

It's not confirmed that foo bar made this; he was just the guy who emailed PSPUpdates about it.
paralipsis @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Bless those hackers. If true, this is the news that I have been waiting for. Damn Sony and their release of 1.52 firware on the European PSP.
OTAM @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Is it just me or does anyone else find it kind of sad that all the news for this handheld has to do with old ROMs and movies rather than actual GAMES coming out for it?
John Bennet Ramsey @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
#7 you make an excellent observation. Hope fully the encryption key will be next but doesn't an exploit just bypass the encryption in the first place? There is a door, now its a matter of who opens. I also smell 2.01 but the minute they make that and "PLUG" this hole someone else will find out how to break in another way they didn't think of and the cycle will continue. I think people will start getting pissed if THEIR music and software keeps getting erased by updates. In the long run the constant upgrading of firmware might be viewed as a bad thing. Companies that make software are repeadetly assured that the security is tight but at some point they will be like yeah right. Sony is scared. Now if they could have made it as powerfull and dynamic as the GCN then maybe people would be sweating. I wonder if the GCN was never fully emulated b/c people don't bother with the not as popular system. God bless hackers and their unique ability to understand code. I have been using computers all my life and could write in Basic and C++ and a couple others but I could NEVER EVER do what these guys do. It is truly an art form. (p.s. the movie hackers was the corniest thing ever. And they really did all that with apples? LOL!!!!!)
patrick @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
it's the same thing every time. i don't know, why people do not think about the things they do!
If PSP is getting hacked and no one is buying games anymore, then why should there be new games? After all you might have a very expensive piece of crap with just about 20 games on it to play in 2006...

13: A very small percentage actually bothers to pirate PSP games, even smaller than pirate DVDs, since its more difficult.

You see what you want to see, OTAM. You want to hate the PSP so you only focus on the negative news. It gets a ton of bizarre news(like the advertisement thing), people making hardware for it, Metal Gear Acid 2, GTA:LCS, NFS:MWBE, Loco Roco, Portable Resort, Katamari, Landstalker, Infected, Burnout, Megaman, Street Fighter 3 Alpha Double Upper, Virtua Tennis... And that's just what this site reports(considering how biased the fans are here, can't imagine they get a lot of tips towards the PSP that are positive). Also, that's just for the month of September. Seems to me like you're blind, dumb, or a fanboy. Choose one to three and apply them to yourself. Perhaps a title to follow OTAM? "OTAM the Blind!" can be cheered from the rooftops as the villiage idiot roams into a PSP thread for no other reason then to ream it. Go forth you attention whore, mother and papa never loved you so!
cameron @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
if this homebrew does not come soon i will throw my psp from the tallest building in phoenix... oh cool burnout legends.... ok now what was i saying. homebrew dude please help us out. thanks !
sopubun @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Christopher7xii, not to knock on you, but let me post a link to show you why people like OTAM are never worth your time and effort:
http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000380059908/
what kind of shitball would ever ask for another terrorist attack to happen in NYC? just because Miyamoto is appearing at the nintendo store?!?! I'm pretty much ready to ask joystiq.com to take all his posts down and ban him, and that if they don't do it, I'm going to petition all their sponsors to pressure joystiq.com to do that or we start boycotting them.
Just wanted to make the entire community aware of how much a freak and asshole OTAM really is!
Wee @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
This might give me a reason to play my PSP.
boneyard @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
a buffer overflow could be useful, but if it's in a part that can be patched then it's prolly gone in version 2.0+.
Super Drew @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Had 1.5 enjoying the apps, Was forced to update because of love for madden, now 2.0 is kind of cool with its feature but ....... need 2.0 cracked
I see this whole thing as being a black hole once 2.0 gets cracked, there's gonna be a new version that seduces you to upgrade like "free t-shirts" listed as a "feature". this thing is never gonna end so I guess its time to buckle up for a long sony's first handheld- that has unlimited potentiel but comes manufactured underclocked to save battery untill some company makes a stronger battery- ride
mayhex @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
you knew it was going to happen.
and it's going to keep happening.
PSP v1.50 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM

Brendan Shaklovitz @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
just something probably dumb i noticed but if you change the frame buffer in microsoft photo editor then do it it really changes
Brendan Shaklovitz @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
forget what i just said. you can edit it as long as you dont edit the bottom right corner where the weird color is. that can cause your psp to freeze and it can be hard to reset if you edit it wrong

Man, give it up guys seriously, this thing about cracking 2.0 has been going on for AGES now!!! Everyone got so excited about someone announcing that they "cracked" 2.0 and all it was was PONG disguised as a .tiff file ! Let's face it, all you crackers etc out there, you've been had, you can't crack 2.0 and you never will. besides why do you want to be able to play 16 bit graphic games on a PSP anyways?
