Doom 3 Super Edition in the works for PS3?
In a recent GameInformer interview,
John Carmack hinted at
developing a "super [awesome] edition of the Doom 3 stuff" for the PlayStation 3. No other details were
stated—indeed, this is very much just an idea—but we're curious about Carmack's choice of the word stuff. If
we do see a PS3 Super Edition in the future, will it be a tired port with a making-of DVD tacked on? Or will we get a
unique experience using "Doom 3 stuff"?
Interestingly enough, Carmack also told GI that he prefers developing on the Xbox 360.

I was tempted to get an original XBox, just because Microsoft lost money on every unit sold... I am just as tempted to support the PS3 just because I want to see these weak developers have to put in an honest day of work for once.
hehehe

Id sure is getting some heavy mileage out of a game that almost everyone was disappointed in. Hopefully the PS3 version will actually be good. They could upgrade that AI from "non-existent" to "metally-retarded," for a start.
Paul @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Has anybody actually come out and said they prefer developing on the PS3? It seems like every day you hear about random developers saying they prefer the 360, just wondering if it goes both ways.
Peter @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
I understand his logic completely... they're going to be coming out with their own fantastic controller scheme that will rival even the Revolution!
With the (optional) controller attachment, players will be able to stop dead in their tracks, drop their PS3 controller and pick up the flash-light unit to illuminate their surroundings.
Never before has a game been so interactive! Never again will you be so pissed off as you chuck your flashlight-attachment into the drywall after being slaughtered in the dark by trap-door zombie-closets for the eighteenth time in a row!
If you become proficient with the attachment you may even have the opportunity to witness the (much-touted) "mentally-retarded" AI and shoddy level design, showcased by spawning an imp 2 doorways behind you for every set of enemies you meet on your darkened path.

Doom 3 for PS3? If they must know, MOST FPS console fans are not on the Playstation machines. Which is exactly why this title for Playstation 3 is downright dumb. Otherwise they're doing this for the PS3 just because there are better FPS on the XBox360 already. However, even so, Doom 3 on XBox is already a good enough run for the title.

"They could upgrade that AI from "non-existent" to "metally-retarded," for a start."
Man, that was hilarious. I mean it.

You must really suck. I had absolutely no problems with the flashlight/weapon switching. Doom 3 was a great game (at least on the PC) - maybe it was just too hard for you newbies.
Peter @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Lost_Canadian, really living up to your name there.
The point of the parody was that it was a highly critical design decision that many people disagreed with on a fundamental level. In fact, the general consensus was that it was completely unecessary and really incredibly annoying - detracting from the game experience in a major way. The humor was that if you actually translated the mechanic to a physical form you'd always get screwed over.
Calling me a newbie and telling me I probably sucked therefor the game was not enjoyable just highlights your complete ignorance. Seriously, if you're so fucking clever maybe you would have understood the post in the first place, jackass.

Well, I'm hoping to work at id Software when I age, but, I have no clue why some say that Doom III was not the, uh, the... a great game. I was not disappointed in it, I was shocked...at how freakin` good it was. This games delivers everything id was saying about it, and then some. 10/10! And who knows? If they do realease it for the PS3 and I said if... then they might convert and see what they've been ignoring for so long. I just hope id makes a new Commander Keen...actually NOTE TO ID: Wait till I come to make that! lol. Its just my opinion. Go id you rock!
Nathan @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Sorry I have to make a correction:
If they do realease it for the PS3 and I said if... then they might convert and see what they've been ignoring for so long.
I meant:
If they do realease it for the PS3 and I said if... then the PS2/3 gamers might convert and see what they've been ignoring for so long.

ET, really living up to your name there too, cause I have no clue where you or your attitude are from.
Im Canadian as well, and guess what? Youre predjudiced.
I had to get that off`a my chest, so lets go back to Doom ok?

On a separate thought, doesn't it seem like the XBOX 360 is a more tangible, real, and exciting system than the rest? The only system I'd actually consider buying for myself is a Revolution, but it just feels more and more like XBOX 360 is showing off its accessories and its games, putting itself on the line, and creating a real buzz. PS3 has typical PS3-talk and some movies, but that's it. The Revolution has an old man pretending he's fishing with a controller. The XBOX 360 has images on its online GUI, plenty of games, system skins, pricing plans, controllers, everything. AND, apparently, Doom3 won't be available for it. That's pretty good, in my book.
Lost_Canadian @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Ha ha ha!
I understood the post - and I disagree with all of it. Having the lights go out as zombies came towards me while scrambling between the flashlight and a shotgun was intense. Yes, it made it harder. Boo freakin' hoo.
You sound like the kind of guy that uses cheat codes any chance he gets. Suck it up, Princess.
Peter @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
His name is LOST - CANADIAN. Which part do you think I was referencing? You people are fucking dense today!
And re:re:Lost_Canadian.
Completely missing the point AGAIN. I am simply amazed at how you seem to be drawn to critiquing me personally and my gameplay habits (of which you know nothing) simply because you want to defend Doom 3. Give it a rest you fucking TROLL.
Jake @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
DG,
Yes, the 360 is a more tangible system with more playable games and accesories. In case you lost track of time, the reason for this is because the thing will be launching in less than two months. PS3 is probably 9 months away, and at least a year for the revolution.
Google Nazi @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
I wish they would make a new doom game instead of remaking it for the PS3. As far as I heard, the Xbox360 and revolution are more friendly towards developers than the PS3 but that is of course from what I heard.
However seeing a game like doom 3 on the ps3 would seriously make people shit their pants! Have you even seen the graphic potential for Ps3? Check out the trailers compare them to the x360 and say... daaaaaamn! Not sure if any of us would survive playing it on surroundsound at night on a 60" HDTV on a ps3.. seriously! With that much power we would be lucky if hell on earth wouldn't truely break loose as the ps3 would create real characters jumping out from your tv into your living room.
Slashbunny @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
My guess is Doom3 engine upgraded with a bunch of extremely system-intensive new features, and the game + expansion exactly the same. Next gen eyecandy to th the max.
Lost_Canadian @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Ha!
Wow, so much swearing! Lighten up. I'm just playing around. You're taking it way too personally. All you've done is bad-mouth Doom 3 and call people names...and you accuse me of trolling? What a hypocrite.
On topic, I played the PC version in high-def on a 51" HDTV - I'm sure a PS3 or Xbox 360 version would look about the same. I still think that FPS games should be left to systems with a mouse. Console controllers are just so crippling - although Nintendo's new controller could get past this limitation if it's accurate enough.
Sharpizer @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Why don't they work on Doom 4 and forget 3? I played Doom 3 and it bothered me that I could move around a room but until I crossed a certain point only then would the zombie freaks pop out. Has Carmack made something else instead of Doom?
I don't really care about the graphic powers of either the 360 or PS3, as long as I don't have to see a stupid "disc read error" ever again.
Jonas @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
this is a reply to paul about people coming notout and praising the ps3 like Itagaki did for 360. Listen to me moron...Factor 5 ( an entire company decided to work on the PS3 due to its power and dropped xbox 360...so F*** Itagaki. As far as caarmack, he finally realizes the power of the ps3 ...thats why he wants to do a Super edition .
neo anderson @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
ok if it offers more gameplay than the pc version even and better graphics and extra features like 4 player multiplayer and head to head matches than it would be worth getting but like ff xi is coming to 360 while all it makes better is graphics and it will be able to crossplay with ps2 pc versions online i dont think ff xi will sell unless it offers extra features and only that would mean it would only be able to play with other 360 ffxi gamers.
ErbilT @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
You know, Doom 3 was not a bad game. I think it was disapointing in many ways, but by no means a horrible game. I know everyone likes to pick on the game because it did not live up to the 4 years of hype, but damn if it is not a decent title.
