Doom (the movie) is due in theaters on October 21 and a trailer's out. How does a
triple-A game with awesome graphics and high production values get transmogrified into a B-movie cheesefest that
manages to disappoint even our lowest expectations? Here's how:
-
Trite dialogue. "Game time," says the Rock, as he pops a clip into his gun. Not excited yet? How about this one: "If it breathes… [dramatic pause] kill it." Ooh, fearsome. Don't they remember the outdoor scene in which the player must fight non-breathing demons? How about those, huh? Are we supposed to kill those too?
-
Lame scenes. The film spends 10 seconds (out of 1.5-minute trailer length) doling out "handle ids" to each of the characters of the cast. Trailers are supposed to include the most compelling content. Is this compelling? "Handle ID Reaper, Handle ID Gook, Handle ID Destroyer, Handle ID The Kid, Handle ID Sarge."
-
FPS-style gun placement. It appears that a good portion of the film is shot in first person view with a big gun obscuring in the way (we're guessing this is a cheapy tactic to save on CG renders for large swathes of screen real estate).
