PSP Memory Stick Duo to Compact Flash converter
If you've a penchant for raw circuitry then check out this prototype PSP Memory Stick Duo to Compact Flash converter. It doesn't get much more raw than this, with the fragile connection ribbon and silicon board exposed for all the world to see. Hopefully the creators will use the remaining 5% of development time to create some form of ergonomic casing for the adaptor in the style of the PSP. Otherwise our PSPs ain't gonna be so portable no more!
The adaptor has been tested with 2GB Compact Flash cards as well as a 6GB Microdrive and apparently the PSP recognises the full capacity of both cards. Now all that's left to do is sort out casing design. Ideas anyone?
[Thanks, XyTec]

Why not just buy one of those USB drives that stores 40gigs and is accessable by the PSP without the use of a computer?

they should try to make it as small as possible and create a slim shell for it and make it fit on the backside of the PSP. just my 2 cents.

Mod it into a logitch playgear pocket or similar case so I can use it when I want or take it off for more portable play.
SO whats the main ourouse here movies, homebrew, I didn't think UMDs could be loaded yet so while this is great for movies I don't know how big thier potential market would be considering the added bulk.

how bout we all get together, share our thoughts and maybe come up with what the psp is mainly for....games anybody?? retards!!!
emehrkay @ Dec 18th 2005 9:42PM
they should mod it into a ps2 case, better yet, ps3

What a waste! With the $50 you spend on this adapter (when it is done) you could just buy a Memory Stick Duo.

It is very possible to play UMD isos off the memory card, making this some very great news. Now if only it had a proper case...

How about just link it to an iPod or other USB On-The-Go HD and we'll be all set.
Better yet, do it wirelessly.
Are there any device-to-device wireless technologies out there with enough throughput for DivX?

They should fabricate a thin plastic shell for the back of the psp and have it double as the battery cover so it can be held in place. And for post #6, it wouldnt be a waste. At best you only get 512mb for $50. If you have a 6gb microdrive ($250) you could hold 7 or more good quality movies at a price far cheaper than a 2gb ms duo ($200).

Jason, are stupid or something?
You do realize that the entire point of this exercise is to allow -cheaper- and -larger capacity- storage devices to be used, right? The cost of Memeory Stick Duo memory versus compact flash shows why this is desirable.
(Sorry, to lash out like that but do your homework man! 2GB CF is $65.43 - 1GB (ONE!) MSD is $68)
Anyway, what I'd really like to see is a 40GB 1.8" toshiba hard drive (of iPod fame)...maybe coupled with a USB-2-Go host adapter. It would definitely make the PSP more attractive to movie hoarders and emulation freaks.
The two screw inlets on the top of the PSP provide something like 5V DC, and the USB port is right between them...just from a physical perspective it could be doable...

Ah, maybe some people already own several CF cards? I have 8GB worth. For $50 I can use them with my PSP... How is that a "waste" exactly?

For anyone wondering - yes, Jason's kinda stupid that way... unless, that is, he can point us to a cheap source of 4gb, 6gb, 10gb, and 40gb Memory Stick Duos...

I would love to see a circuit diagram of the adapter. Since CF cards and PCMCIA/PC cards are pin out compatable, wouldent it be possabe to made a simmilar device to allow use of PC cards with the PSP?

i think it should be about 10 cm wid by 10cm, make it shiny with a border and maybe a LED light to show if it is properly connected. and have a double slot on it, one on each side, the chip can be made thinner but fatter up-down ways, have a long cable so u can keep it in ur bag and play. KICK ASS

This is too bulky for psp to carry around. I was wondering why can't someone come out with little board with MS extender to attach the board to back of the PSP and have 4 to 10 slots on the board to put more MS duos on it to expend the capacity to atleast 10GB (1GB each MS). I'm not expert on boards and hardware chips, but i'm working on a scatch drawing to put on the net so somebody that know how to work with boards might give it a try. thanx everybody. keep up with great work.
