Major Developers and publishers seem to have discovered mobile gaming and will soon
begin pumping out mobile versions of their best titles.
Square Enix (a third-party Japanese game developer known for its RPG titles) has decided that it'll rake in more loot by pursuing mobile and online gamers, according to an article appearing in Japanese site Yumiuri Online. The main reason for the company's increased focus on the mobile and online game markets is the growth prospects of those markets.
Similarly, Electronic Arts also declared this week its intent to invest heavily in mobile game development, announcing a volley of new mobile titles, most of them aimed at casual players.
Square Enix president Yoichi Wada summed it up best when he told Yumiuri Online that, "mobile games also have no distribution cost and can generate a large income if a consumer continues to subscribe for a long time."
There's gold in them there mobiles, but the gold rush won't be pretty. Expect to see great games ruined as they're shoehorned into tiny mobile devices. Expect also some great new gaming experiences to come out of the efforts of companies to capitalize on mobile gaming.
