Goodbye PSP v2.00, hello v2.01
Sony is preparing to release its next dose of
PSP firmware, hoping to combat the latest hacker victory, which allows PSP owners to downgrade their v2.00 systems to v1.50. A spokesman for Sony
commented, "We plan to deal with this issue with the next system update." While Sony has not specified a release date
for their next firmware upgrade, the company will most certainly enforce it with the wave of upcoming holiday
titles—starting, perhaps, with GTA: LCS. And for those of you hoping the next upgrade will include a host of
new features, don't count on it, v2.01 (or whatever it will be called) will likely be quick and
dirty
tidy.

You know I remember when everyone was falming MS for needing patches and all that stuff... looks like Sony is leading the patch front now..
Jason Eubanks @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
I hope version changer still works.
Chris @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Why is Sony doing this.
If I want to mess around with MY PSP I will, it's mine, I paid for it.
If I brake it I brake it... so what.
pspimp @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
"Why is Sony doing this?"
Because people will buy less games if they can run any other games on the unit.
Billy @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Then don't upgrade... durrr.
craig @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Silly Sony. Tricks are for kids.

Re #5 "Why is Sony doing this."
Sony is not making any profit off of the PSP game systems, they're actually taking a loss, they want you to buy their games/movies, and if you have homebrew, you're less inclined to buy those things.
Killian @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
If Sony doesn't release updates then people can run pirated games off the memory stick, although I'm not sure how much the updates will cut into that-- the people who would go to that length probably won't update the PSPs to begin with.
Christopher7xii @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
"The sad part is, Homebrew SNES is better than anything made for the PSP. :("
Get off Nintendo's nuts, Kamalot. SNES emu is fun, but I still play Burnout more, before that I played Soccer more, before that I played Lumines more, before that... etc.
Point being, nobody bought a PSP at launch going "I CAN EMULATE FOR ONLY $250+TAX!!!". So yes, I will play Secret of Mana or Street Fighter, at like 90% of what the original was(between button sensitivity and bizarre run speeds, even at 60fps)... But that is definitely not the most important thing for me on my PSP>... WOEPWGE. God you're arrogant in Nintendo's creations.
ANYWAYS - for those of you with 1.50 now and don't know it, there are "Version changers"(PSPSet, WAB 2.5b Version changer) that change what your PSP thinks it is. So while it's 1.50, my PSP thinks it's 2.0, and will run any game that requires 1.52 like Namco Battle Museum or Burnout Legends.
Just don't be a fool and buy into 2.01. Maybe in the future if there are more features(although honestly I miss Sony's BG manager from 2.0).
I do love this ongoing battle of Users vs Creators. It's like God vs. Man, and the ongoing power struggle between the two.
Pretty Obvious @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Who the hell would update their firmware now? Especially since theres a 2.0 downgrader available.
Deathdealer0351 @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
I stood on line until midnight waiting for the PSP release all I got was
1. mediocre games
2. no HDD
3. overly expensive duo cars
4. overly expensive UMD movies
Sony needs to pull its head out of its ass!!!
I will give them the benefit of the doubt. If GTA LCS sucks im selling my unit. If SOCOM sucks Im selling my unit.
Sony is getting left behind by PVP's which are providing wicked HDD's, beautiful screens and tons of options. Archos AV500, Zen Vision.
Sony get with it, or get out!! quit taking these kid's money.
PiratePete @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Since when did Burnout Legends require you to have v1.52 firmware to play? I've been playing the iso since it came out and never had to upgrade.
White Rose Duelist @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
"Point being, nobody bought a PSP at launch going 'I CAN EMULATE FOR ONLY $250+TAX!!!'."
No, people bought PSPs at launch thinking they could play PSP games for $250 plus tax. They later realized that emulation was the best they were going to get.
darryl @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
"No, people bought PSPs at launch thinking they could play PSP games for $250 plus tax. They later realized that emulation was the best they were going to get."
Really? Hrm... I own one but have played with emulation for about 10 minutes before I was bored. But I guess you were speaking in from the hundreds-of-thousands of interviews you recently conducted? Just give in an buy a PSP, we all know you are just dying to do so but lack the funds. Sell your survey data to marketing sleaze bags, that should pay out about enough.
Not Impressed (Dmitri) @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Meh. You will always have people bashing the better product. I am sorry, but the fact of the matter is that the PSP is starting to catch up with the DS' sales.
When the day comes that the PSP has more sales then the DS, I will be right on this site to tell all of the DS fanboys to blow me.
I still have my DS, but Nintendogs and Advance Wars DS made me realize how fucking gay it is. I will probably only get Metroid and thats it for future purchases.
Brandon Shipe @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
I was in a really good mood today and decided to write up an article on Sony's attempt to stop owners from hacking their PSPs. The article is entitled "Sony's Devious Plan to Undermine PSP Hackers" and can be found here:

Trent @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
"We plan to deal with this issue with the next system update.", could mean that there'll be a DOWNGRADE feature in the next update. So you won't have to risk your PSP to downgrade.
Not Impressed (Dmitri) @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
God dammit Kamalot. You got me there. -runs away to play Advance Wars DS-
There, that outta get some feedback.
Christopher7xii @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
"You can bet that new versions of the firmware will be required for newer games. With the PSP, you can either play homebrew or play games that lock your PSP from running homebrew. Sony will keep trying to lock us from running the software we want on our PSPs."
Learn to read Kamalot. THERE ARE HOMEBREW APPS THAT CHANGE YOUR VERSION NUMBER SO YOU CAN PLAY GAMES THAT REQUIRE A HIGHER VERSION NUMBER. My PSP thinks it's a 2.0, so I can play Coded Arms, Burnout Legends, and Namco Museum just fine on my 1.50. In future releases, they'll bump the firmware version # higher so you can continue to play games and homebrew. So no, you don't have to pick one or the other. I spent yesterday playing Burnout, Link to the Past, and Bleach:HtS2 yesterday. Live in your world, I'll have fun in mine.
Anyways, pull up any old threads you want. My point being as I said is people are obnoxious when they say "shut up" basically. I'm not flat out saying "everyone should hold hands and sing merry fra-la-la". I'm saying don't bitch and whine telling people your feelings were hurt and they shouldn't say such things. If you're being a tool and claiming the same thing every other NDS net nerd has said in complete repetition 500 times... I will point out the many ways that you suck at life. There is no point in rationalizing with someone who looks to slam the power system for no other reason than it's cool to hate the hype. That's the way america is now, and that's definitely the lifestyle you live in. PSP is "cool", so you slam it saying it has no future and no games(how many PSP games have you honestly spent 15+ minutes with? Probably none.) I've played a ton of them between what me and my friend buy, and now the imported ISOs I can test out before I buy. Only game I regret buying is Dynasty Warriors, and thats because I bought Dynasty Warrior 5 for PS2 like a week after, and since then realized the definition of perfection was. Going back to DW4(basically what PSP was) was a bit of a drop after DW5, but the unique strategy settings are what keep me playing it. By regret, I mean I just wish I picked up Twisted Metal instead at that time, or Ridge Racer.
Tell you what. Here's some homework. Go buy a PSP, Lumines, Wipeout Pure, Burnout Legends, and Medievil Ressurection. Or download the ISOs, whatever. Play them each for 30mins. That's what, 2 hours of your net surfing, puppy petting day. Then come back and tell me that the PSP has no good games. Ya know, actually TRY playing them before being completely biased and saying they're bullshit and no fun. You sound like the kid who they won't let play softball with them, so you go home crying about "i didnt wanna play anyways... softball's dumb. i'm gonna go home have mommy make me some cookies and build legos."
Pirate Pete,
"Since when did Burnout Legends require you to have v1.52 firmware to play? I've been playing the iso since it came out and never had to upgrade"
---Maybe the ISO is different(as in they don't have firmware locks). I bought a legitamit copy and I promise you it comes with a 1.52 upgrade on disc, and requires you to install it if you have an older version.
GuyManDude @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
"Go buy a PSP, Lumines, Wipeout Pure, Burnout Legends, and Medievil Ressurection."
As much as you wouldlike to believe Christopher, those games don't appeal to everyone.
Eran Hawke @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Damn Christopher. If you are a 'mature' gamer, we must be living in Bizzaro world.
The only one in here whining is you. Maybe these people hit close to the mark for you to become so agressive and offended. It isn't even like they came here claiming the DS was better than the PSP and YOU start flippin' out!
Your ranting has colored you as a complete fanboy. Now everyone here knows anything you say is a joke, not because of content, but because of your rude and flaming presentation.

jay, wouldn't that console be the revolution?
I am just thinking so because of the fact it can play so many SNES games...

rufus @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
You guys sure do bitch a lot. So they're going to upgrade the firmware, so what? Last I remember, upgrading was not forced and for the games that require an upgrade to firmware, there are ways around it (as stated by several other people).
Jeez, you guys fight like the morons in a Windows/Mac/Linux forum. I've always believed that certain consoles appealed to certain people. It is no different between the DS and PSP (I have both so that I don't miss out on either). I will say that I am somewhat disappointed in both devices. The limited amount of unique and quality games is very poor in my opinion. Maybe that will change with this holiday season, but c'mon its been a while for both devices and so far the options are still limited.
However, because of the emulator abilities of the PSP, I have to admit that I play it more. I like being able to play some of my old favorites and especially take them on the road with me (not just Nintendo systems and games).
I know that the emulators eat into Sony's bottom line, but if they had some better games, maybe more people would buy them (just referring to the PSP at this point flamers, calm down if you're pro DS, not that DS has a whopping variety of actual DS, not GBA, games).
Ok, I've had my rant, so what was this whole thing about again...? Oh yeah, Sony's going to be releasing a 2.01 firmware. Where did the DS/PSP, Sony/Nintendo crap come from again?
Stop bitching flamers! You're scaring away the normal folks!
Kamalot @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Not Impressed (Dmitri) first brought up the DS when he started calling it gay. I have no idea what prompted him to call a piece of hardware gay. Maybe he has lots of experience identifying gay hardware. I dunno.
RedZender @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
In the end you just need to ask your self if you want to play great old school games on your psp or if you want to Customize your psp the easy/lazy way.
As for the flame war over the handhelds
I think it's childish to fight over witch one is the best it's kind of like fighting over witch of the sexes is better.
This is my 1st time here so be nice (^_^)

Who cares if PSP is gonna get more sales than DS, who cares about PSP fans, who cares about DS fans. I have a DS and a PSP, and I think they're both great systems in their own way. The DS has 2 screens and one is a touch screen, which is a cool way to input data, and the DS folds up nicely to protect its screens from damage. The PSP can play movies on UMDs, can play mp3s, can display photos, and other gadgets to entertain, but Sony fucked up with the pixel problem, and that's why people are bagging the PSP. Honestly, I don't hate either the DS or PSP, but I have 1 pixel which is stuck on white on my PSP and it gives me the shits, but I don't hate my PSP now, I am angry at the incompetant LCD manufacturing company/companies who have curses the PSPs with a terrible fault. Or maybe the screens were damaged in transit, or when they were connected to the PSPs, or maybe when they were tested. No one outside SONY knows what happened to those PSPs, but we all know that we are not happy with SONY for not accepting refunds/exchanges and when exchanged we get an even worse one than we had before. So I'm not sending my PSP to SONY for a replacement because I don't know what they'll send back.
Someone said before that when Nintendo had that same problem with the DS, Nintendo were replacing the faulty DSs with perfect ones, now that's service with a smile.
SONY...you have really let a lot of people down. Now you must regain the world's trust again, but how ? ...Maybe by offering a refund atleast to the unlucky customers who have dead/stuck pixel(S)on the LCD. If SONY doesn't start behaving I don't think that many people will buy the PS3, I know I won't. I'm absolutely sick of assholes who take your money and give you shit in return.

Marcel Franquinet @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
For those with dead pixels on the screen I have some information. In The Netherlands we have a TV Show called "Kassa" which means "CashRegister" in Dutch. Angry customers reported that their PSP had 1, 2 or more deadpixels only days after they bought it or even straight out of the box. Sony claimed that they would only replace/repair the screen if it was 6 or more pixels. This caused an outrage and Sony Netherlands is now taking BACK the faulty PSP's via FreeMail and repair them or even swap out if they are younger than 1 month. If Sony Netherlands can do this.. well.. you should confront Sony in your country with this.
Please feel free to ask me for details etc.
Regards,
Marcel

OK heres the score; Sony jumped into the gaming race way after the veterans had made it a staple in todays society. Who are they to come and tell us that we can not use a product we purchased from them in the way we want? I understood Microsofts problem with the XBOX being hacked because they were hacking XBOX games, this is entirely different. We are merely finding ways to improve on the original so that we can fill the gaps in our boredom with something worthwhile while we wait for them to get off of their ass and make something worth paying fifty bucks for. Let me tell you, I just downgraded my PSP and soon after purchased Armored Core. I think its a great game, but cannot play it without losing all my EMUs. Heres the deal Sony, I took the game back and spent that forty bucks elsewhere. Your solution? STOP DICKING WITH THE PEOPLE THAT PAY YOUR CHECKS!!! I will not buy another game that requires me to update. There you have it, you lost business by screwing with people, Wake up and smell reality!
