Hudson assaults GBA with retro revival
Hudson will release a six volume "Hudson Best
Collection" over a period of 43 days in Japan. The list includes:
-
Vol. 1: Bomberman Collection (Bomberman, Bomberman II)
-
Vol. 2: Lode Runner Collection (Lode Runner, Championship Load Runner)
-
Vol. 3: Action Collection (Challenger, Meikyu Kumikyoku)
-
Vol. 4: Nazotoki Collection (Nuts & Milk, Binary Land, Salad no Kuni no Tomato Hime)
-
Vol. 5: Shooting Collection (Star Force, Star Soldier, Hector '87)
-
Vol. 6: Boukenjima ("Adventure Island") Collection (Takahashi Meijin no Boukenjima I, II, III & IV)
But is yesteryear worth 2940 yen (about $25) a pop? The truth is, if you love these games enough to want to buy the GBA re-release, than you probably already bought them once for NES/Famicon years ago. Is it wrong for a publisher to charge you twice? Doesn't this tempt you to just get a Flash Card, install some free software, and download the free ROMs?

Yes, It does tempt you. But i've already done that. It seems they've just figured out that old games still attract people, and the big scene of classic gaming. If they're going to launch these games again they should do it with new levels or something new, too add again the value they had at their time.
Peace! Great blog!

Not sure where the jury is on this, but didn't the RIAA say something to the effect of "when purchasing a CD you are buying the plastic, not a license to *use* the music" ?? So piracy? err...not unless you really want to... (As I seem to recall no one gave Nintendo shit for doing this with their "classics" edition GBA NES ports...)
Back on topic, they don't owe you shit. You paid for the NES version, you got the NES version. Transaction complete. If you'd like to play it on the go, you buy the re-release. Buying a 1st edition book doesn't mean you get a free upgrade to the 2nd edition (I know, I've tried! :-)
The examples of this sort of thing are endless...
They are not forcing this on you...They are not crippling your old NES cartridge if you *don't* buy the GBA re-release. The sense of entitlement shown here is pretty appalling and just goes to show the lengths people go to to justify piracy. (not that I mind *too* much...what with two 1GB sticks filled to the brim with roms for the PSP! kekeke!)

In a free market, a seller can attempt to sell just about anything.
The consumer votes with their dollar as to whether the seller can do this.
Because Nintendo continually re-releases older games on newer formats (and consumers buy them), why shouldn't Hudson try it also?

what chudgoo said. excellent job.
I'm going to go grab a free paperback copy of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy from Borders. They won't mind, I bought it in hardcover!

And I'm going to go and get the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy on DVD for free from my local W.H.Smiths. I can get it for free because I already bought it on VHS.
