When Capcom first incorporated the Marvel Comics universe into the fighting genre ten years ago, we were treated to a colorful, manga-inspired reimagination of our favorite X-Men and later, many other Marvel favorites. While these first Street Fighter-style brawlers didn't exactly further the genre, they answered the call of many Marvel fanboys. Activision added some 3D styling with the Mutant Academy games and X-Men: Next Dimension, all of which received lukewarm reviews. Now, EA has taken the reigns with Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects and the major game portals have weighed in. Despite the high production values, Nemesis seems to suffer from redundant single-player scenarios, dark environments, and a control scheme that is identical for every character (casual gamers might see this as a plus). IGN is particularly harsh, but TeamXbox gives kudos to the story mode. With so much positive press received by recent Marvel entries Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, X-Men Legends 2, and Ultimate Spider-Man, Nemesis may have had too much to live up to, but if anyone has the resources to rebound from a shaky start, it's EA.
An imperfect Nemesis: Marvel and EA miss the mark?
