When are they going to make some original games for the PSP and stop just porting old games!? Where's the innovation?!

Um. Ooops. What are we talking about again?

YES!!!!!! What I've been waiting for, a FF6 remake in 3d! I hope they do that for every other FF. It would also be nice to see the latest final fantasies with SNES graphics.

Joystiq are calling it FF3 which is the jap version. The remake is of FF6 in US, called FF3 in Japan. You can tell from the pic above, its the part of the introduction where the female character loses her memory.

The screenshot above is for FF6 aka FF3(US), I'm already playing FF5 via emulation on my PSP so no excitement for me there but I would relish the opportunity to play through FF6 aka FF3(US) in 3D on my DS.

yea, what dummies, making a 3D update to a game that I dont think has been released in any form ever in the US.

What a dumb system DS is, I much rather have mediocre ports of PS2 racing games, than a completly adapted port of classic RPGs from Square.

I think we've graduated entirely to the Japanese nomenclature, I mean all but III is already available in the States, meaning that FFIII is getting a 3D version but just a port is going to be released for the highly over-rated FFVI.

I want more Chrono Trigger you bastards! (Referring to SquareEnix)

#3, that's a sweet idea, maybe FF9-2 or 7-2 in 2d graphics on the DS. I still think that the SNES died way too young, and there was plenty of life left in it. (probably part of why I didn't buy a PS1 for like 3-4 years)

No, the game being remade in 3D for the DS is Final Fantasy III, which was released in Japan on the Famicom. Doubtful many of you have played it.

The game most of you know as "FFIII" is actually FFVI in Japan, which is being re-released on the GBA.

To clarify further:

Final Fantasy III : Japanese release for the Famicom (NES). Never released outside of Japan. This game is being remade in 3D for the DS.

Final Fantasy VI : Japanese release for the Super Famicom (SNES). Released in North America as Final Fantasy III. This game - along with FF IV (released here as FF II) and FF V (not released in the US until the PS1 remake) are all being updated for the GBA over the next year.

Osiris (#4) you're getting it mixed up. It was known as FFIII here in the US and FFVI in Jap.

You're all wrong. This article is talking about the French "Final Fantasy III", which was originally released for the ZX Spectrum and was called "Shining Heart Dinosaur Chaser Girl Mikumiku: Forever In Your Dreams" in Japan, and was later ported to the American NES as "Excitebike".

Here's the Wikipedia page for it:

Wow. First joystiq comment I've ever read with a real sense of humor. Excellent.

I'm totally psyched about this, this is the final missing piece, a never-released-in-the-US FF game only for the DS. That is HUGE.

Judging by what they've done in FF1/2 and already announced about FF4, the GBA remakes of FF5 and FF6 will have some value-added features in the game, so even if you're playing them illegally portably already, you'll be missing out. Now I'd think it's academic that we expect a port of Chrono Trigger as well. I think it's great that Square and Nintendo are able to introduce some of the best games ever made to a whole new generation.

Did someone say MORE FF GBM faceplates?

"How long do you think it will be till we see Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX find there way onto a Nintendo console as well?"

Never. Why would they do that? The reason these all got released on handheld is because they're all formerly Nintendo games, so basically they're restoring your childhood onto Nintendo, the company that brought you them(butchered) before. That on top of the fact that Compilation of FF7 has games for PSP and PS2, it wouldn't make sense if they went and released it on Revolution, since that's the only possible release system of Nintendo's currently. Gotta remember, FF7 = 3 discs, FF8/9 = 4 discs. That's roughly 2gb and 2.8gbs possibly(700mb x # of discs). That will NOT fit on a DS or GBA cart. All the original FF1-6 topped out at 256mb on FF6... Which can fit on a GBA cart just fine. Those go up to like 512mb last I checked. Same for the DS I believe.

Possibility of them porting FF7 to the PSP? Unlikely, but tasty to think about. If they were gonna do it, they would have done so during compilation's development one would think.

People don't complain about PSP ports, they complain that is ALL it has. Can you understand the difference? And to be technical, this FF game will be a remake and not a port.

Christopher, I would be inclined to agree with you, except for the little fact that Namco is bringing both Xenosaga 1 and 2 to the DS. Yes, it's going to be a fundamentally different game, but never say never.

And we're still missing Final Fantasy Mystic Quest :P

#4 has it backwards. It was called FF6 in japan and FF3 in america. THe japanese have FF1-10 in the right order. The american releases are all screwed up. We technically (before GBA remakes) only had FF1 FF4 FF6 & FF7 [japanese titles]. So those were renamed FF1,2,3, &7 in america. FF1 for nes, FF2 for snes,FF3 for snes, and FF7 for PS1 and the rest are in order.

For all those confused, the remake is for "Final Fantasy III" (JPN), NOT FF6/FF3. Fans of Terra and gang unfortunately will only be getting a nice 2D rehash on the GBA.

I haven't had the chance to play any Final fantasy before, having these games avialible in english on the GBA and DS is perfect for me. Also I look forward to being able to play the games in sequence and avoid the confussion as to which Final Fantasy game I'm playing FF II or am I playing FFIV? Is it US II or Japan IV...

That's it. Hands down, I'm getting a DS. FFIII was my favorite game as a kid, and is still my favorite Final Fantasy game. To see it in 3D will be sweet.

This has me more excited than most videogame news in a long time.

Thanks for the clarifications, y'all. I thought that by including "FF5+6" in the headline, it would discourage speculation about 3D remakes with Celes and the gang, but I guess it's just been a long time since I learned the various Japanese and American numbering systems for Square. =) I think I'll link to those screenshots, brw, just to make sure no one's confused. Sorry if anyone misunderstood what I meant in the original post! Again, III (never in the US) in 3D, V and VI (3 US) ported.

It's about time! FF 3 (JP) FF(6) here is my personal favorite Final Fantasy. Now people will see where their beloved cast of FF7 was spun off from.

Final Fantasy 6 better than Final Fantasy 7. Both highly over-rated.

I'm just hoping Square finally rerelease Xenogears in the us.

What ever happen to chorono break?

#17: Although, and this is from some really really ancient memory here, FF7 had, IIRC, rather a lot of duplication between the discs, since you could go anywhere at any time up to (and including?) the 3rd disc and only a few movies were specific to any particular disc. Again, as I remember, only a couple of the first movies were only on disc 1, and the final movie was only on disc 3, and everything else was split across discs as you could have encountered those cinemas at any particular time.. A PSP re-release is probably _technically_ possible, but I agree, they would have announced it during the whole FF7 compilation.

For giggles, I just copied all of the PC movies onto my computer - all told, with the executable and movies and everything, it's roughly 1.2gigs. Certainly doable on the PSP. Whether they could make that fit on the DS by lowering the bitrate and resizing and blahblahblah, I dunno. What's the DS's maximum cart size? 4gigabit/512megabytes?

Of course, we never expected Resident Evil to fit on the N64, either.

FFV is the only FF game I ever got into. I've been waiting for a portable version since the PSX game came out.

VI I can take or leave. Too bad they won't be 3D though. I'd much rather have a DS version of V than a DS version of IV... I mean III. Dammit, it's hard to keep these numbers straight.

Final Fantasy VI is my personall favorite game.. of all time. There are many games that are better in different ways, but FFVI was the game that I had most fun with ever. I'm overjoyed to know it's going to GBA. But aside from that.. FFIV and FFV are also some of my favorite RPG's. This is all great news to me.

Just to clarify, the numbers they're using for the GBA/DS games are the true (Japanese)numbers. FFIII is in 3d, not FFVI.
