LaughRiot,

If you don't see the point, you need to get a brain. Someone should force you to eat Cheetos for an entire year every day. Maybe you would see the point then.

Ok...let me put the $60.00 game in perspective. A DVD costs $20 a shot and gives 2 hours of material. If a game's pricing and amount of time played is proportional to that of a DVD, a game should cost well over $100-$200 (10-20 hours of gameplay), depending on the game. So get a job and quit your bitchin'.

Dralt, I agree with LR. The number of original titles released during launch have no bearing over anything other than perhaps YOUR OWN personal preference. There will be original titles released. What if they are on day SEVEN or day TEN or day EIGHTEEN. Big Whoop. There are original titles coming! To argue about this whole thing is like ya know, pointless.

And your cereal analogy makes absolutely no sense. There are NEW games being introduced, even if they are sequels in ADDITION to original titles. If you don't like the sequels, simply don't buy them. Nobody is forcing you to do anything. Me, I'm in line for PGR3.

Originality is dead.

Seriously, when people ask for something "original" are they asking for a new IP(intellectual property), a new way to play something... what are you looking for? Embassy hits the nail on the head. It may be the same IP, but from what I've seen, many of the sequels at this launch have really expanded upon their past, Oblivion being the most obvious. No one seems to bitch about Nintendo not having original games at launch. In fact, Nintendo fans (me included) DEMAND sequels.

As for Sony, their launch lineup will suck, just like the PS1, PS2, and PSP. And you know what games will eventually make the PS3 a hit? Sequels.

I read several arguments for the $60 bucks for the games. Someone said that companies don't wanna gamble with something that already worked. First off I'm tired of nothing but sequels, but if they're just taking content that they already have and just upgraded it (pretty much stand alone expansion packs but for a price of a full game), then why the heck are they charging even more than 50 bucks? They're the same games, with the same differences between their prequels as the prequels to the prequels. Pretty much same exact games with little gimmics places in and now they're selling them for 60 bucks. THe other argument about movies being 20 bucks. A game, once an enemy has been made, they are copied and pasted over and over again, now you have not one guard but 70 guards. For games, you get lets say 20 enemies, and then 12 different levels, sometimes using same elements over and over again. So half hour to 1 hour of unique content is stretched out over 10 hours. Just play halo and look at all the stuff used and reused, the only thing that changes is little bit of voices and level design (and not a lot of times as that, like the deactivation levels)

e2go,
Yeah...dream on. Most sequels play the same. They have enhanced graphics (more cheese), they have light bloom effects (more salt), higher resolution textures (more sugar), more shiny surfaces (more cream), but they are the same games. The action in those games is the same. The goals in those games are the same. The gameplay is the same.
And, AGAIN, that has nothing to do with Sony, the PS2 or the PS3. I am not defending Sony or anyone else.
When one sucks, one sucks, even if someone else sucks more.

So, yeah, dream on, original titles will come. How many original titles did we get for Xbox this year? Can you name a few that were worth anything?

Microsoft has been very successful at one thing: Breeding zealots who defend their brand with their lives.

HEPCECOB (#54)

I'm not trying to be a dick about your reply to my DVD comparison, but hear me out. I could argue that a movies takes place in the same set for half of the movie, or that by having a cast of specific people, no new characters are introduced...therefore, we see the same content for most of the movie.

It's not about how much actual material is in the game--it's about progressing through and adventure. Some games have stories too, ya know. Other reasons are just for the competition.

When you take into account the total hours you play a game, it usually ends up being many, many times that of a movie. To some, it's worth it.

The main thing is the production costs. The games with production consts coming even close to that of movies are the highly overhyped highly marketed sequels. The rest aren't close to the movies.

Somebody forgot what makes games different from movies. Games are an INTERACTIVE form of entertainment.

Hence, the equivalent of stagnant gameplay is the repetition of the same movie sequence.

Just imagine the same scene repeated for the whole length of the movie.
They release the same movie again 2 years later, with enhanced CG sequences, more colorful costumes, younger actors, more/new guns etc.

That's what is happening in the video game industry right now.

Original titles for xbox in 2005?

Just off the top of my head:
Forza Motorsport, Lego Star Wars, Juiced, Total Overdose, Jade Empire, Advent Rising, Indigo Prophecy, Darkwatch, Gun Metal, Still Life, The Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction.

There's way more I'm sure-- and between now and Christmas, there's a bunch of new, unique titles coming out as well from what I read.

Original titles are a much harder sell, but they are out there.

Give me a Metal Gear Solid any day though over something like Pariah.

I've read all the comments here, and I have to say, watching Dralt get all worked up is like a game in itself. People here are definately pushing his buttons. Why this isn't a launch title 360 game I'll never know.

Totally looking forward to Kameo, Project Gotham Racing 3, and Dead or Alive 4. Maybe Call of Duty 2. What's everyone else getting?

Lol. Hey Dralt, they are similar in gameplay because they are games of the same GENRE. Ever notice how FPS's all basically play the same? Apparently some of you guys on here won't be happy unless a new genre comes out every other month, the developers take a loss on every game they put out and sequels are banished. For the love of God man, gamers must be the whiniest consumers in the market... Here's a shot of reality for you all- The gaming industry is NOT here to appease each and every gamer out there, they are here to MAKE MONEY. It's a busines. Just because their company happens to entertain does not mean they are looking our for your best interests.

Forza = PGR2?! Forza is a simulator, Gotham is an arcade. Yes, they both involve cars...

Jade Empire = KOTOR?! Oh my gosh, this is getting ridiculous. Never mind the fact that the storyline was totally original, Jedi's don't know Kung Fu, and gameplay was only roughly similar. But you're right, ancient Chinese martial art RPG's and Star Wars are pretty much the same thing... Jade Empire was VERY original and fresh and met with critical acclaim from everyone.

If this comment section is an accurate representation of the average hardcore gamer's intelligence, I'll demote myself to "weekend warrior"...

Forza is a simulator!? :)

I did one simple test...I started a race, went 1/4th of the circuit, turned around and drove in the other direction, set up a frontal collision with another car at about 110 mph...the other car was probably going as fast...3 seconds after the collision...my car was ready to resume the race and the other car had already resumed the race...

Frontal collision at 110 mph into incoming traffic...the car still runs... = GREAT SIMULATOR...BS simulator that is...

Jade Empire had exactly the same gameplay mechanics as KOTOR and KOTOR 2. If you can't recognize that...but yes, obviously the story was different...GAMEPLAY MECHANICS is what I talked about...in fact, it was so dull you may now buy it for $18.16...although it was released less than 6 months ago...

Anyway...whatever...you are happy...there is enough people like you, so the industry will survive...meanwhile creative geniuses leave to do other things...

To finish, a bit of reading to smarten you up:

Why not do something constructive with all this energy and make your own original game?

Like, I dunno (but don't steel my idea!)... The Wind (tm) TooFast Technologies

Control the wind, by blowing objects around. Level 1: Leaves. Level 2: Birds. Level 3: Tumbleweeds.

If you partner with Nintendo, I'm sure you may be able to convince them to use an interface where you physically have to blow air from your mouth to play.

I feel like I've entered thew twilight zone. What the hell is wrong with some of you people?

That (along with Embassy words wisdom) is the most inane, brainwashed justification of pricing I have ever heard. You cannot justify cost of goods in that manner. As an analogy, book publishers could justify charging more than either the movie or gaming industry. But that would be bloody stupid, no?

Items, goods, products are generally priced according to how much it costs to produce, supply and demand, and a dose of corporate greed(e.g. they'll try to price it as high as the desirability of the item will allow)

The corporations may try and justify their costs in the manner you stated, but they're not stupid, they have ulterior motives. What the hell is your excuse?!

Okay, Ln. What I was trying to say is that DVDs and other things, such as CDs, are all over-priced, and you really don't hear too many people bitch about those. I was attempting to put things in perspective. BTW, no shit they price games according to production costs, etc.

People do bitch about DVD and CD prices.

What doesn't make sense about this industry, or any other media industry for that matter, is that the money we pay (related also to how many people pay for it) ends up on the silver screen (or on the boob toob) but isn't related to the quality of the actual goods. All those tickets paid for all those costs for all that CG in the Phantom Menace didn't make it any better. On the opposite end, the poverty that produced Tetris made a game that's still playable to me now, hundreds of hours of use after my initial purchase, and it's enjoyable.

The more depressing fact is if it cost a lot, it will probably make a lot. Did you see Phantom Menace? So did I (although franchise and marketing play a big role too).

The hope on the other end is that a game as brilliant as Tetris does end up selling a lot.

The weird bit in the middle is that it costs virtually nothing and takes virtually no tallent to make a crappy song to entertain yourself and those around (can you put your lips together and blow), but songs still cost a dollar each.
