Jack Thompson is not Jonathan Swift – not nearly as clever. So when he titles his idea for a
video game A Modest Proposal, he is degrading the beauty that is Swift's infamous child-eating scenario. But
that's exactly what Jack Thompson did – he is offering $10,000 to charity for anyone who makes his proposed game.
Essentially, the game involves Osaki Kim, a father whose son was "beaten to death with a baseball bat by a 14-year-old
gamer." The guilty party was "only" sentenced to life, even after finding a connection to video games and the murder,
so O.K. (as Thompson abbreviates) goes on a killing spree to avenge his son – he kills the publisher (Take This, a
not-so-subtle reference to San Andreas publisher Take Two), followed by all parties involved in the trial,
merchants of GameStop-like store and arcades – and, of course, any cops that get in his way.
$10,000 is a lot of money, and could really help a charity out – do you think he would mind a flash-based online game,
or would it have to be a next-generation console release?
Jack Thompson makes a modest proposal…

But before you mail, yes, it will have a hot coffee secret.

Probably been posted already. But has he considered that these games cull our urge to kill? Halo ass-whupping of grunts vs Real Life ass-whupping of 6 year-olds? Hmm. Taking out aggression on grunts has kept me in a persistent zen-like state for the last four years. I have never lashed out.

Jack Thompson, let me start by saying..you're a dumbass. O_O; Alright, onward and away from that.
Let me explain something to you. Your son was beaten to death by a "14 year-old gamer", neh? Did it ever occur to you, once, that this may've been the child's fault [him wanting to exploit all the stupid press video game's get], his parents' lack of responsibility, or both?
..Or, did it ever occur to you, that games are not evil, diabolical devices that program children's minds subtly to do bad things?
See, I'm fifteen. I've played games, from the Old Nintendo up to the X Box and such since I was three years old.
Never got a detention at school, I pull alright grades, ain't ever been arrested, don't do drugs, and I sure as fuck haven't bashed somebody's head in with a baseball bat. O_o And yeah, I've played all the Grand Theft Auto's.
My question to you is this. Why would a company make this game, when it costs millions [in the case of games like Halo II, BILLIONS] to even CREATE the game? When you are offering $10,000 to a charity, and not to the company in order to MAKE the game?
Do you think they can pull this money out of their asses just to make you shut up? o_o Not to mention, how much money they'd lose, since very few people would actually buy the game, meaning it'd be putting their company in greeeeaat debt?
-----
Also, Mr. Jaaaack [and all whom think like ye], let me ask you another question. Why the fuck do you look at the ESRB ratings and automatically assume that makes the game bad or good? Why not do a little looking into the game yourself, instead of being an irresponsible asshole who looks at a rating and assumes a game's alright, and then when it "causes problems" like this [coughcoughbullcough], you whine at the game's maker & publisher like it's THEIR fault, when they're not even the ones who gave the game the fucking rating in the first place? Guess we all need someone to blame, huh?
Tell ya what? I've made a game before, SNES graphics. [I don't remember programming evil into it tho'. o_o] But! I'll make this game for ya', and give it to you.
Why? So on public news, everyone can find out you never intended to GIVE the $10,000 to no charity. Than, you'd be the hypocrite, no?
[JACK THOMPSON has fainted! You gain 100 EXP! You gain THOMPSON'S PENIS IF HE HAD ONE!]

I bet He really didn't expect anyone to make it either. The gaming community kicks ass seriously, if it wasn't for us gamers they would have never had any arrests on the Source theft.

Dude, I think a couple of us gamers should e-mail the big corporations like Rockstar, Take-Two, or better yet, all game developers, publishers and all-in-all businesses, and ask their employees to donate enough money so that each company has $10,000 summed up by themselves, then pool that money together, decide on what charity (or charities) they want to give to, and just do it. It'd make JT look like a greedy bastard, since he asked for something in return before he donated.
Because the game companies, whether JT believes it or not, care about their customers.

Well... If this were a national regulation, it'd be a little thing called unconstitutional. But that hasn't stopped politicians in years, has it? 9th and 10th Amendments people!
If this were a state regulation, it'd just be taking responsibility from the hands of the parents and giving it to the government.
Those are the problems.

Wow.
First of all, this Jack Thompson character strikes me as a small little man trying his hardest to be heard in a big, big world. The only reason I've even heard of this clown is because I happen to read Penny Arcade and other gaming comics -- in my normal, daily scan of the nation's news, I have yet to hear much (if anything) about him.
Second, as many here have observed, Mr. Thompson's "Modest Proposal" is little more than a thinly velied publicity stunt. If someone actually does "win" the $10,000 prize for charity, they've shown that the evil, monolithic Gaming Industry will sell its own soul for a few bucks. If they ignore his little ploy, he can claim that the industry is too scared to create an army of psychopathic gamers bent on its destruction.
What leaves me agog are his claims (or at least insinuations) that a) the industry is a monolithic unit, that b) it just makes whatever games it feels like feeding to the public, and c) is on some sort of dark mission to corrupt society at large. To quickly address these points:
a) the industry is a monolithic unit: Nonsense. Anyone with a basic grasp of the business world can see that the game industry is a highly competetive one, not unlike the world of TV or movies. Some giants have risen to the top (such as EA), but the industry looks to me more like a seething stew of various companies all trying to get ahead of each other.
b) the industry just makes whatever games it feels like feeding to the public: Again, nonsense. While there have been some notable flops based on unusual ideas (anybody remember SimEarth?), what we mostly see is an almost slavish following by the game companies of what they perceive to be the market's desires; I need only point to the proliferation of 1st-person shooters (stemming from Doom's success), MMORPGs (stemming from EverQuest's success), RTS games (stemming from Warcraft's success), and so on. If anything, you're more likely to see conceptual meetings go along the lines of "what do we think people will buy and enjoy?" versus "let's make a game about ultraviolence for kids and convince them to buy it."
c) [the industry] is on some sort of dark mission to corrupt society at large: I'm getting tired of saying "Nonsense." The extremes we see here and there are more the result of companies trying desperately to differentiate themselves from their competitors than because they feel some deep need to create "Muggers: the Bloodening." The sad truth is that violence sells, and where there is a demand, there will be a supply (at least in a free market economy such as our own).
If someone were to ask me what I see as the number one cause of society's ills, I would without hesitation say "parenting." As a parent myself, I constantly make value judgements about what I allow my kid access to and what I don't (and not just with media: Barbie dolls are fine in my book, but I cannot abide those abominable Bratz dolls). I also talk to my kid about those values, so that when I do forbid something, there's a rationale behind it. If a parent is not making those kinds of decisions and is not discussing them with their children, those children are left without a rudder to inform them what's good and what's bad, and that to me is where the problems start.
Adults, however, are a totally different cup of tea: anybody over the age of 18 has the right in the US to buy and play whatever video games they want, and I am deeply suspicious of those who seek to restrict this right. It's a basic freedom of speech issue: if we start censoring video games, it begs two legally important questions: a) who gets to decide what's acceptable and what's not? and b) what kind of legal precedent is this setting for other forms of media? In my mind, a free society should always err on the side of being too permissive rather than being too restrictive when it comes to publicly available media.
All of this stuff is generic to the debate at hand, but what I find shocking is the behavior of Mr. Thompson himself. After reading the email log posted on VGCats, I must say I've lost pretty much all respect for this man's opinions. If he were more than a common rabble-rouser he would hold himself with something resembling decorum and calmly say his piece. Instead, I see someone who's actively abusive and deliberately rude to anyone who does not share his opinions. For a man who professes to be a Christian, he's not behaving in an especially Christ-like manner. He strikes me as little more than a low-rent pitchman trying to kick up a lot of sound and fury to distract from the fact that his claims and goals are generally groundless and more than a little suspect.
I wouldn't have bothered to even write this, but since Mr. Thompason seems to actually read this thread, perhaps he'll be able to calmly respond in a fashion that is neither nasty nor obfuscating. I doubt it, but it's certainly possible.

"The offer of $10,000 is real. The real hypocrites here are the game companies, because they'll never make such a game. Paul Eibeler of Take-Two, for example, wouldn't want a game out there that targets him for death, despite his assertions, through Doug Lowenstein of the ESA that "no game ever caused anyone to do anything."
There is the hypocrisy, gentlemen. They know such games are dangerous, yet market and sell them to kids with M labels on them.
It is sad I had to explain this to all of you." - Jack Thompson
No, they just don't want to spend the millions of dollars to make your dumb game. And how are they the ones being hypocritical, after you've spent the past who knows how many years preaching about how bad violent games are, but now you're offereing them to create one!
And it's not like they're selling these games to kids, it IS the parents who buy these games for them. Maybe you should start going after the real problem here, bad parenting. Then again I guess most of these ignorant parents wouldn't jump on your side of the iussue if you blame them. But go ahead and keep setting the blame for violence in today's society on the video game industry. Have fun with this little publicity stunt of yours.

I think violent crimes are caused by clothing. If you look at the statistics, you'd find that almost all criminals have a recurring habit, almost an addiction, to wearing clothes. Further, that almost all crimes are _committed_ while wearing at least some amount of clothing. The evidence is clear.
Luckily, I have a solution to end _all_ violent crime, clothed or not. Amputate everyone's arms and legs, and continue the process with all newborns. Then we can live free from the threat of violence.

Jack Thompson, if you are reading this, you are the the one who "[has] little frontal lobe activity left" if you seriously believe that they would not release such a game because they are "hypocrits." They would not release such a game because it lends credence to your ridiculous claims of what effects games have on the minds of children. It's because these violent video games are not "targetting" anyone. You, sir, are a dumbass, and your petty satire is ridiculously flawed, because you assume that Paul Eibeler actually believes that the "studies" showing the effects of video games on children were really credible. If video games really had the effects on children that these "studies" show, the crime rate in America would be increasing rapidly, and the fact of the matter is IT'S NOT.

Why does everyone hate this guy so much? He doesn't lie, he's not a fool, and he isn't wasting his time with his campaign either. His fault lies within putting himself in the great God Irony's line of fire. Er uh, I mean he is a hypocrite because he keeps assuming that, well, I will quote Rockstar, "cutting the nuts off the mouse" is the fool proof solution. Which works, but ultimately, and solely in context it is as hypocritical as it is destructive. In fact, I remember reading somebody's blog on it that stated Thompson implied an Orwellian society. Blah, blah, blah, you've all read everything from both sides. Point is, why keep taking cheap shots at him? Chances are you've never held a conversation with the man in real life. You don't even know him. Sure, that's his responsibility, but that doesn't remove your ability to be open-minded.
Then I read this: "Apparently some of the gamers here who have little frontal lobe activity left don't understand the uses and nature of satire."
Sure, that's only "the gamers here", but it's still silly to make such direct remarks as a lawyer in such a case. Posting on a blogsite? Maybe that's his style. Who knows. Although, I must admit, there was truth in his statement, regardless of how crude. This kind of thing always happens, but I hope that you can see that by saying that you are, "lowering yourself to his level". And he did say, "left." Thus implying that we lost it through gaming. Or maybe mini-putt, I still haven't figured this one out.
I'm not a big fan of Mr. Neat Shit, but I thought this was appropriate.
To both the gamers, and Mr. Thompson: "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."

I advise taking a look at Penny Arcade Mr. Thompson as you've been outdone by the gaming community once again. Since your donation was entirely fictional despite your claims to the contrary the guys at PA are doing their bit for charity instead. Not only did they donate the 10k you originally promised but did not deliver they did it without a moronic publicity stunt.
We all know that this whole game thing was just to grab some headlines as if this violent video game was made then you would be completely against it. You insult the gaming community greatly with both your actions and your words when we're actually doing more good for the world than you are. You can make your silly little arguments about incidents such as Columbine but when you consider the proportions then these are anomolies. When you consider the percentage of people that play violent games out there and then the percentage of game related crimes it really isn't that much.
Also you actually have to prove that the games contributed somehow, I've heard your piss poor arguments about how "killers have been trained on DOOM" when all you seem to be going on is that they owned the game. First of all let me explain what DOOM is to you because I'm sure you don't know. For the most part the game series involves killing FICTIONAL DEMONS (Note: Not people, demons most not even humanoid) with primarily fictional weaponry.
Now if I was training to go commit a murder, it's not the game I would choose but it is a great game. Not all crimes can be directly linked to games unless you have confessions from the killer. It's like the rubbish of linking Dungeons and Dragons to suicides because they had a Players handbook in their room.
Also there is no physical way that games are solely responsible for any crime committed even if they were influenced by it. A perfectly sane person who has never played a game in their life won't go out and kill cops after playing GTA. This brings me to my next point that you're targeting the wrong people. Attacking the industry gets you no where, it just annoys everyone and makes you hated in the community. You should however be attacking the Parents who buy these games for their 10 year olds. Parents who don't raise their kids properly and don't pay enough attention to what they do. These are the real causes of game influenced crimes but you just don't want to believe it.
A person is influenced by two things when they grow up, these are known as nature and nurture. Nature refers to the environment they grow up in and what influences are exposes to them. Nature is vital for learning new things but the nurture part of the equation helps them understand these concepts. If one is lacking then the influence from the other can be overpowering.
If there is something already mentally wrong with you then any influence can affect you, games and TV EQUALLY. Yet you're not going to attack the TV or film industry for making violent films. I've been playing games for as long as I can remember and plenty of them have been violent.
I am not a violent person though, I've rarely got myself into fights and when I have I have been the attackee rather than the attacker. I've played games like Doom and GTA as well as Metal Gear Solid and Hitman. The list goes on and on but the point is that not once have I thought it would be a good idea to carry out any of those acts in real life. I've never even considered it as it's become second nature to me to not do anything I do in games involving murder.
(NOTE: However if like in Resident Evil there happens to be a horde of brain hungry zombies shambling towards me then I would of course whip out a shotgun. Where I would get a shotgun though is anyones guess but I'm sure it was near a green herb.)
Now Jack a challenge for you:
Produce a rational counter to my entire argument within a month. If you accept and fail the challenge then you will have to donate the promised $10,000 to the charity of Gabe and Tychos choice in their name. If you don't accept then well I guess I could do what you did to David Walsh and call you a coward.

That's one more time around, and there is not a sound.
He's lying dead clutching Benjamins – never put the money down.
He's stiffening.
We're all whistling.
A man we'll soon forget.
Vedder/Pearl Jam
Jack, what do you have? What is your life beyond your campaign? Got any kids? Grandkids? When was the last time you didn't pay for sex? When you're on your last legs and we're still playing videogames with our friends and family will you be able to look back and tell yourself it was worth wasting your life? I've seen the way you respond to criticism, I've seen the way you communicate on sites just like this one – you feel like a big man, Jack? Some of the people you 'take on' are just kids mate – you're a real tough guy. You're pathetic – and you know it too. I'm wasting my time.
Maybe I'll go play Burnout with my kids.

Hey, Jack Thompson!
Lick my privates you old, crippled wuss.

Jack's been crusading against the porn industry for over a decade.
How's that going, Jack? Banned porn yet?
He's had no impact whatsoever – and the same will happen here. You can't decide you're going to cripple an industry and think you'll be able to do it – what if tomorrow I tried to ban rock 'n roll? Do you think I'd have a shot?
You're an ambulance chaser with an law degree and a bad suit, Jack. You think trying to exploit victims of violent crime by creating cases against videogames companies makes you a good person? Why not lobby the government for tighter gun control instead? Idiot.
On your site you selfishly ask your followers to pray for you. There's front row seat in Hell with your name on it already Jack, you virus.

Do you notice that Jack Thompson doesn't seem to be able to address people without calling them names, or just being a rude jerk?
What a loser. I have no respect for a grown man who can't address people without calling them names. Grow up, Jack. Video games didn't do anything to me, but it sure seems like being a conservative Christain lawyer has turned you into a complete asshole.

So let me see if I get this right:
It's okay to kill and maim cops and innocent arcade employees in a video game in order to send a message about the dangers of video game violence?

Actually, I'm thinking of doing a little experiment myself. It's going to be a simple flash game, one of those shooting-gallery style games. Here's how it will work. You have X amount of time to kill as many of the targets as possible. Everytime you kill one, you gain some extra time. The twist? Guess who the targets will be. That's right, good old Jack. So here's the purpose of the experiment. Jack claims that people attempt to immitate violent acts in games. I expect this game to be quite popular due to it's subject, and the way I see it there are two possible results. This game could prove that Jack is wrong, further destroying his precious arguments. Or he could be right and... well... he'd better hope he's wrong. :P
And while I'm at it, yes Jack. This is an open challenge. Here's my email too. Balthasar_Gelt@msn.com I look forward to speaking to you about your concerns with the gaming community.

And that, more than anything else, is hysterical.

Jack, you've made a mistake. You've gone and taken us lightly. The gaming community, at heart, is full of misfits. We are the kids you and your elitist friends talk about like statistics, the ones you mocked in high school because our parents didn't have the proverbial "skrilla" that yours did.
And one of our number has gone and proven you wrong. Actually, several of them. From creating text based games, to mods, based on your designs to donating the money specified IN YOUR NAME.
We're good people, Jack. We're kind, and loving. We have friends, and families, and children. And we've had enough of you walking all over us. Using us as the cobblestones of your political agenda. We've had absolutely enough of being taken lightly. We are not violent, Jack, in fact quite the opposite. But we are intelligent enough to make a fool of you. We are intelligent enough to stand up for ourselves.
In short, Jack, please pick a new pinata for your little games. We don't like sticks. They hurt. And, despite your attempts to prove us evil, we will go on creating and playing video games, sharing them with our children, and taking care of our own long after old age has claimed your cold, selfish heart.
One last thing, Jack. Misconstrue my words at your own risk.
In fact, I dare you to.

This ones directed at BiblesBeBitchin!GoGod!
I totally agree. God is the only one who can truely create entertainment. Are you people too good for what the Earth has to offer?! Go outside, run, skip, do something better than waste your time here. Everything we have is because of God, not because of some heathen who has a sick sence of humor. God is so awesomely cool, I mean, who else can you trust 100%? Certainly not these gangster kids with their "nines". GTA is just one of the many evils that are corrupting all that is pure in our society. I say we ban all entertainment, from T.V. to pornography! Heck, even computers should be banned. The internet is an evil tool of Satan, it's being used to bully children, and for gross sexual needs. After the internet falls, we can move onto a new world, a world where we can live in peace and harmony. We'll burn the books that have violence or conflicting opinions! We'll stop all space programs, because all we need is what we have here! We'll ban music that promotes hate, sex, and violence. We shall have a utopia of peace, love, and harmony. God for the win!
...
Got kinda outta hand there.
BiblesBeBitchin, that was one of the funniest things I've read in quite some time. I can tell you're being sarcastic (As am I, *GASP*, *SHOCK*, *HORROR*!) it's plainfully obvious.
Back on topic, this whole thing seems quite ridiculous to me. It was insanly obviously that Jack wasn't going to pay the money; that's the whole reason he made the statement. He figured no one would ever do it, reminds me of Pastafarianism. If you make a ridiculous enough claim you'll get some attention, but in this case Jack got taken up on his offer. It's pathetic how he used such a stratagy to gain publicity. Jack, you're only making youself look like an ass when you back down from your offer. I know I just sound like everyone else in this see of hate against you, but you brought this upon yourself.
See you all online.

What bothers me about this guy is that he's nothing but a low-budget demagogue, and anytime someone attempts to engage him in a worthwhile debate, the best he can do is come up with childish insults. I think what worries him the most is that kids half his age and under are becoming more sophistocated; not because of video games, mind you, but by the fact that we can come across information faster than he could ever come up with a witty argument. There have been so many 15-yr-olds (and under) that have sussed out his petty scam and surpassed his intelligence that it makes me wonder how he even passed the bar. I know I may be stating the obvious, but doesn't his "insults" remind you of people just starting out in an MMORPG? I think the term commonly used is "n00b."
I digress. Another point I wouldn't mind stating is that this guy seems to relish in leaving out details in order to make his "facts" look more credible. I could make the comparison to "cooking the books" like Enron, but I think that would go over his head.
Another thing that astonishes me is that he actually cares enough about gamer's opinions of him that he would frequently visit this forum. Not only that, but he took the time to post on it (though not very well). It's bad enough that with all the social vises out there that have actully proven to have a negative impact on the world, he picks video games out of the bunch. And as a further proof that he has no life, he posts low-rate insults to the crowd that you'd think he would steer clear of. I have an idea: if you're so afraid of the death threats, then why play with fire by contacting us?
To add insult to injury, he's holding money hostage, money that could be used to not only save lives, but that could go to anything to uplift someone's life. If he's so worried about the negative impact of games, and that $10,000 is burning such a hole in his pocket, then why doesn't he sponser a rec center for kids in need? Or donate books to a local library? I'm glad that Penny Arcade stepped up to the plate (as they have done in the past with Child's Play), because it shows that we as a gaming community have a heart.
I doubt this guy would have the guts to email anyone who's shone a spark of intelligence (and sorry, BBB, that doesn't mean you. I think that the term "Bitchin" might be a cardinal sin anyhow, but I'd doubt you would know nothing about that). I'll post mine anyway, though just in case someone out there can tell me why anyone should bother with Jack Thompson anymore.

Wow, I feel sorry for you Mr. Thompson. You've got a whole community of people who share the same interests that hate you.
But, I think you enjoy this. You like the attention. So, why dont you attack some other interests people have? I mean, it's only fair is it not?
People like cars, how about we start there?
People die in cars. It's been proven. People kill with cars. It's been proven. Lets attack some people who like cars!
Like the Mustang? You're a murderer. It's been proven, I mean, cars have killed people right?
How about people that like to take walks?
Lots of murderers have walked up to their victims, why dont we just blame that? I mean every person who walks leisurly must be a murderer, correct?
Seriously sir, if you enjoy the attention this much, you better get to work.

I agree with the tighter gun control comment.
These violent crimes that has Jack so worked up probably wouldnt have happened if people didnt have such ready access to guns as they do in America.
We dont have these problems in NZ, and we play the exact same games.
Im not blaming America's gun laws (although I think they are god damn stupid) and I realise we have a much smaller population. I just think Jack is focusing his attention on the wrong problem.
Hell, more people die in road accidents, than in senseless shootings, more people die from smoking cigarettes, and far too many people die in Alcohol related deaths, but does Jack care about any of these things ?
1 death is a tragedy and someone should always be held responsible, even if its misplaced blame.
1000 deaths is a statistic and doesnt bear a second thought.
Isnt that right Jack ?

There's not really a whole lot more I can add to this. Jack Thompson is spouting more of the same inane bull? Check. Jack Thompson's credibility is so low you'd need a diving bell and sonar to find it? Check. Gamers are *far* less emotionally unstable, as a general rule, than the sputtering fuses he makes us out to be? Check.
Only one point I can add, and this runs mostly for you fanfic readers.
Ever hear of David Gonterman? AKA Davey-Kins?
I know *I* have heard this, "I'm a professional and I think this and if you don't you're obviously wrong and a stupid and you're going to hell. Because you're a stupid." line out of someone before...
Google the name sometime, it's a comparison worth noting.

Congratulations, Jack(ass). Your shipment of white hoods and white robes will come in shortly. I'm an avid video gamer and I've played many types of video games for quite a long time, ever since I was four years old. Does that make me inferior? Retarded? A madman?
I haven't commited a crime. Heck, I haven't even gotten a TICKET. And I'm pulling a strong GPA at a very challenging university. Looking at your comments now and your failure to go through with your word on your "Modest Proposal", which is really more like soapbox moral grandstanding than anything else, I can easily tell that you don't know how to observe things unless it's in a courtroom, lambasting everyone you hate (for no other reason than prejudice, really) like another typical internet ego maniac. Your vocabulary does not impress us, much less your idiotic tirade.
If you don't like what the video game industry is putting out, then don't be stupid enough to let your kids play the games. And get a vasectomy.

Hey Jack, instead of donating a measly $10,000 (which wouldn't have even covered an NES game), why don't you donate the entire cost of developing the project? Hell, if they distribute it free, you won't even have to back out of paying for pressing and packaging the games, and let's face it, a walking caricature like you is all the advertisement the game needs, right?
My name is Steve, and the closest thing to a game that I play is Sunday's New York Times. So spare me the ad-hominems.

By the way, did anyone else notice how ignorant he was to pick a Japanese/Korean mix name for the main character? Is he trying to say something here or did he just think that it sounded "O.K.?" I have to hand it to him for at least not naming the guy Reggie Jackson or something. Would've been a great omage to San Andreas.
