Edmunds.com carried out the dream comparison test for many a Gran Turismo 4 player by placing the game against the real life cars on the same tracks. This has been done before, but not with such a variety of vehicles. They pitted a real life Ford GT, a Dodge Neon SRT-4, Ford Mustang GT, a Mazda RX-8 and a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo against their in-game counterparts on the famous Laguna Seca track.
According to the driver the setup (which consisted of a 43-inch LCD monitor, Sparco Racing Cockpit Pro seat and GT4 force feedback steering wheel) conveyed an eerie "level of accuracy and detail". The locations of landmarks were spot on and the driving "feel" was excellent. So how did the lap times compare? Well in the Ford GT, the driver found he was around 14 seconds slower than the in-game counterpart. The reason? Consequences. Careering over the top of the blind crest at 140mph in Ford's $150,000 press car was not really an option. There's no pause button in real life…
