Can't be any worse than Halo and Halo 2. If those games can carry the Xbox so far, PDZ should certainly be able to carry the Xbox launch. Unless they also copied and pasted the same map area over and over and over again...

Dralt,I sense some sarcasm in your post, but nonetheless it's good to see SOMEONE agree with me on actually TRYING THE GAME before you judge it.

If the game is shitty, then don't give money to Rare for doing a bad job. Rent the game or play a demo and if you like it THEN go out and buy it.

OTAM,

There was no sarcasm in that post. I swear.

And I agree 100% with that:

"If the game is shitty, then don't give money to Rare for doing a bad job. Rent the game or play a demo and if you like it THEN go out and buy it."

These days, publishers and developers get away with crap. This is bad.

OMG. You're not a 'hardcore' gamer, you are more like 'mallcore'. Good job dimwit."

Wow. I'm pretty picky about correct spelling myself, but why dismiss his entire review (er, set of impressions?) for a spelling error? Getting the main character's name wrong is notable for a franchise like Perfect Dark, but it doesn't take away from the experiences with the game that James related. I believe his opinions remain quite valid (even if 480p is not technically an HD resolution).

From what I've heard (and I've only played a bit o' Goldeneye on the N64), the smooth play mechanics of Halo are what set that Xbox series above the previous generation's gameplay from the Perfect Dark series on the '64, though innovations like dual-wielding and such were in fact implemented back then. What I noticed from the gameplay movies were a distinct lack of that Halo evolution in FPS gameplay "smoothness." If they can get that working in a distinctly PD way by launch, then I think I'll be very pleased with PDZ as a game (though I really hope they fit Halo-style checkpoints and reloads into the single-player campaign mode).

The only catch for me is whether PDZ will make it through MS certification with these features still lacking or not. Extra time could do this game wonders, but I'm not sure if they can afford that kind of luxury. As long as the game's out at least six months before Halo 3, however, it might not be that big of a problem in the end (what with Call of Duty 2 set to be released this year as well).

Just my opinion, though, so you certainly don't have to agree with me.

I have no problem with the review. I'm not expecting anything more than a pretty FPS in the style we've grown used to on the Xbox and PC. I don't expect a technological leap of 20 years...
However, some people will never be happy because they consistently expect too much from "next gen" like its going to be something so powerful that the world will never be the same.

They expects grass to move when they walk through it, for water to drip off the character if she wanders into it, for environments to essentially behave exactly as they would in the real world. Touch a wet pipe and the water will transfer to your glove, or get blown off by a passing breeze. Please. It's Xbox 360 not HAL9000.

If you push the console visually, then where do you have room to then also have effects like animated grass that reacts to your presence, or water that lifts off the pipe onto your glove as you touch it? Answer. You don't.

If you sacrifice graphical quality in order to attempt to add such effects, note attempt, then these same folk would then complain that the graphics don't look next gen. Heck, they already complain that PGR3 runs at only 30fps, something no doubt done to enable the long draw distance and detailed cockpits.

Imagine the number of polygons required to model every blade of grass in a field, and how much computation would be required to actually make them move as you and your foes passed through that field.

One day. In the distant future, when console power far exceeds the requirements from graphics, physics, and AI, maybe you'd see such wonderous things. But that is a long way off and requires a lot of power. Because lets face it, next-next-gen, you won't expect the same graphics will more motion in the environment, you'll expect better graphics still, more photo-realistic.

I tell you. Some people live with the fairies.

Again Zerolight, incredibly well worded. And again, totally missing the point.

When you say people expect "Next Gen," you are still talking about graphics. A game that plays the same and looks different is "Current Gen."

Next gen, the key word being "Next" implies something "in addition" not just gloss. I don't give two shits how the blades of grass move or whether wetness transfers if its the same old shit over and over again. Voice Commands in Battlefield 2, Weapon Purchasing in Counter Strike, Vehicles in Tribes, Grenade priming in Team Fortress (or Half-Life for the unknowing)

These were changes in the genre. These moved the genre forward. To assume that we are out of ideas because we have "tried everything" is ludicrous.

Our imagination has no end. We can and will create new gaming experiences. The more tied down we get with textures and photo realism, the more we allow developers to stare at "rendering" status bars and drink sodas.

zerolight,

That's not the point at all.

On one hand you have companies hyping their stuff to extreme levels.

On the other hand you have those same companies complaining that gamers have too high expectations.

That's the point.

I just visited Spong.com and they have a banner ad that reads: THE MUST HAVE GAME FOR XBOX 360. That's referring to PDZ.
Others at Microsoft have described PDZ as the new Halo.

So, obviously, people have high expectations.

Underpromise, overdeliver is still the best recipe for success in my book.

Matt is just a fanboy with really nothing constructive to say nor have any appreciation for what goes into playing a game and then writing your thoughts down in a form that allows others to see something from your perspective.

Critiquing a review based on the auther's spelling of the main character's name and attempting to define a game as next-gen because of all the "perceived HD" trailers he has seen just shows the lack of merit his opinion carries.

And finally, 480p is NOT HD. HD is 720p and above. I wish people would read up on things before talking about them.

On to the topic at hand...

I really do dislike the jumping jackrabbit syndrome that cheaters always end up using in FPS multiplayer games. I say cheaters because as far as I am concerned, they are simply exploiting something in the game to give them an advantage. This is not clever strategy, it is irritation. So many things are put into these games to get them close to reality, but jumping like an idiot is not reality. I cannot believe developers don't take the time to implement a realistic jump. Both one that affects stamina (just like running does in most games) and one where the jump has physics realism (both in an inability to aim at someone while jumping like a bafoon and one where there is a squatting/pausing when you land and then more time effort to jump again). Some type of implementation that factors those things in can allow jumping to be an affective way to go over crates, hoods, etc, without giving it an unwanted artifact for idiots.

"Critiquing a review based on the auther's spelling of the main character's name "
Uh, right. Mispelling the main character's name indicates to me that the author took no time researching this thing or even cared about factual accuracy. Why should I trust his word when he clearly doesn't care to get an important (and obvious) detail correct?

Matt, you are nitpicking. It's not that he called her Angela, Claire, or Roberta. He mispelled her name. To dismiss the entire review because of that seems to me that you simply didn't like *his* opinion of the game/review and chose to latch on to whatever inaccuracy you could find to justify your position.

wow, there's alot of hate here. PDZ looks great, and you fools have not played it and take this guys word for it?! I bought Halo2 the first day it came out, played it, and then didn't touch it for 2 weeks until I hooked it up to live. Halo is no PD. I'm so looking foward to T-baging every one of you. I'm so glad there's no BS jump in this game, and all I hear online, and out of my friends is "WAAAAAAH, where's the jump?!" did goldeneye jump, did pd jump? no did halo yes, does it suck, yes.
On to saving games; why would you want to save a game in the middle of the level. Mabye it's just me, but I don't know anyone else who beat Goldeneye's Facility on 00 Agent in under 2:12, do you?! Would i like to save that half way through so it was easier? HELL NO. I preordered PDZ like 2 months ago, and I don't think my expectations could drop if Rare took a crap inside a case and sold it to me. Jerks. (oh, and when you say, hey, that darkhuman kid sucks at FPS, why listen to him? well, i opened every cheat on goldeneye, and all but 2 on PDZ, and i'm a level 32 in H2.....oh yeah, and I RAPE!) -xboxlive tag DarkScruffyBere if you still don't believe me

If you don't like it then don't buy it!

While Joystiq tends to be biased on various things pertaining to the Xbox 360 from peaks at the build of the game and the way it plays i must agree. I was lucky enough to visit X05 (no joke) although i was unable to get to Perfect Dark Zero the build of the game was flawed. The gameplay ALSO seems a bit stale and although the roll feature looks awesome in motion id have liked to see a jump inclusion. The Gameplay seemed a lot like TimeSplitters as a good comparison. The weapons look amazing, though id still like to see the return of the Callisto NTG, the Phoenix, and the ARE4. The game still looks and moves like a current generation shooter, but im still puzzled by what to expect from a next generation shooter.

What do we all expect from a next generation FPS? More depth? More immersion? I dont feel that Perfect Dark is aiming for that. Rare seems like more of a burden on Microsoft than a blessing at the moment. (Although im not including Kameo which is amazing) But too much faith and responsibility has been placed on a company seemingly still stuck in the 64-bit generation. As stated Perfect Dark is and shouldnt meant to carry the Xbox 360 they have an awesome lineup besides PDZ with DOA4 (with the new Spartan Female inclusion will most likely sell bundles), COD2, Kameo, Elder Scrolls IV, hopefully Project Gotham Racing 3, and Frame City Killer looks like loads of fun. Halo 2 far overshadowed the launch of Perfect Dark Zero with people waiting years in anticipation only to be slightly underwhelmed and fanboys and Halo 2 devotees know that they were disappointed in some aspect. So again not much riding on PDZ at this point to compare it to Halo 2, at this moment at least.

To #47 Size does matter a lot in the case of the Xbox 360 this console is a powerhouse in some regards pushing its capabilities less in favor of the PS3 if the technology is utilized correctly but storage is a concern. Microsoft pushin HD as a standard is questionable since they are pursuing a less than HD friendly format. Compression tools are amazing but they can only do so much most original storage space on Xbox games barely went over 4 5 GB and the rest of the disc was often left unused but the Xbox 360 is a much much more powerful console and pushing HD they will need every bit of space too produce amazing HD visuals and fit them all on a standard DVD9 disc. How they pull this off without having games more than 1 disc will be amazing but once again Microsoft knows what its doing.

I agree that innovation is a good thing but at the same time there is nothing wrong with making a game that does nothing new but that does all the old tricks really well. With a few exceptions one of the biggest games in recent history did this. It was a little title known as Halo. Bungie didn't do anything that was really innovative other than making a FPS with decent vehicle controls. Often developers try to innovate and they just end up falling flat on their faces. I have no problem with companies playing it a little safe and focusing on making a solid game that is enjoyable. Not every game has to innovate or push the limits of the hardware or display more polygons on screen at a time than any game before. Innovation piques my curiosity, graphic get me drooling, but good, solid, fun game-play is what gets me to open up my wallet.

Worst thing to ever happen to PD was leaving the tootalidge(sp didnt feel like looking it up) of Nintendo. The original Perfect Dark was better than this version, I have heard. Little things that made PD great were the headbobs when you would cap someone in the head.. and the extrodinary(for the time) AI. THis game lacks that. It's just yuour generic PC style FPS. And that blows. Oh well another franchise ruined. I know two people who have played this game, and both of them hate Nintendo.. and both of them said it sucked. That worked for me.

We have a saying in back in Jamaica "To each his own". I think it applies here & now in the USA. We are not Hordes of cattle - at least not me - and regardless of how many times Joystiq print in BOLD CAPS "Don't Buy PD-Z or the XBOX-360" one of the first games on launch Day for me is PD-Z & COD-2. I've seen HighDef gameplay footage and I was very impressed.
But Good Luck with the Article though.

In other words, another case of "graphics beats innovation". Too bad, since Rare used to be the deluxe innovators (Blast Corps, Goldeneye, Bad Fur Day [not to say "Perfect Dark isn't on my list of all time top ten favorite games", because it is, but rather it wasn't as innovative as these others) it's sad to see that purely who OWNS them decides the quality of their games.

I won't buy a 360 (for my own reasons) but I will play this game before I pass judgement. However, this dampens my hopes that Rare would exceed beyond their past achievements. :(

this game is really fucking boring. I played it the other day when a friend randomly got it as a gift, and after 15 mins, we rested the 360 and put in halo 2. Why? Because halo 2's sharper graphics and faster loading times were more interesting than perfect dark zero itself. Apparently, Rare thought that adding a bunch of reflections to PDZ would make it look cool, but it fails. The gameplay is really boring, and reminds me of Timepsplitters, which is not really a good thing. I hear Kameo is really good, but this game fucking fails. Fuck Perfect Dark Zero, check out goldeneyesource on google, they're doing what Rare apparently can't do anymore: make a good game.
