"Would a $99 PS2 make you think twice about laying four Benjamins down on the counter for an Xbox 360?"

No - but it'll sure hurt the trade-in value on my unit towards the PS3.

I have never seen the point in purchasing a console the minute it comes out...think 3DO...it could die before it begins. Beyond that, competition drives down prices and that $400 Xbox360 may only be $300 next year. Besides if a system has a good life cycle (5-7 years) then wait for the one that has the best content when all are on the table. As far as the PS2 it would be great to have it for $99. If sony had done this a year ago, the gamecube may already be gone, but hey life goes on. folks who were going to buy a 360 right away will still do so, the price drop won't kill the new hardware, the new hardware will kill itself.

Nossy: You are retarded

"LOL and people complain and say they won't buy another XBox 360 version if they re-release it with a HD-DVD or Blu-ray drive in 2-3 years...yet many people will run out to buy a slim PS2 version. Bunch of Hypocrites."

The PS2 and the Slim PS2 are (despite the size) identical systems. If MS releases a X360 later that has a HD-DVD drive then any HD-DVD game that comes out WILL NOT play on the normal DVD X360.

Okay does anyone think that the price of a regular XBOX will go down to $99? I sure hope they do - because if so - I'm picking 2 up just for Halo Link battles and xbox live. The Xbox I have right crapped out (It's when they first came out - It's got some age.)

I know when it hits $99, I'm buying one. I'll do the same when PS3 hits $99 in 2009.

I have never owned a PS2... just been playing my GBA, DS, and PC. If the price went down to 99 bucks, I'd definitely pick one up. There are just a whack load of games for it... and for cheap.

As far as the 360 goes, I'm planning to wait until at least the PS3 has been out for a few months before I invest in either.

Gonna get a Revolution for sure. I think that the controller is going to rule for FPS games... and it'll likely be affordable.

well i think it would hurt its release in a way...and for those who commented that it wont hurt the release because they already own ps2 is crazy!well one thing is that YOU already own a ps2 why the hell would you buy another one...anyways i think it would hurt it in a way because
- there will be kids around asking for their parents to buy them a console, and any parent would surely go for the $99 console
- imagine if you own a store/restaurant and theres a store besides you thats coming up with a new food, what do you do?you drop your price to hurt the competitoin in way (maybe this is not a good word)..now imagine yourself strolling along this street and your very hungry and have not much money..where would you go?whos your daddy?...

i think this a pretty smart move, it may not hurt xbox360,s launch but its sure hell gonna slow it down....

It wouldnt make me think any differently, but i know my cousin who is just about to buy a game console would be swayed by a perfectly good ps2, with a huge library of cheap games, for 99 dollars. I mean compare that to a 400 dollar beast with 60 dollar games that will come out in fits and starts for the next few months, and the fact that he isnt a hardcore gamer. and I think that the price drop would cut in a little, but then again the people that buy the first xbox360's are going to be people who want the cutting edge, not tech from 2000

I'm buying an Xbox One when the 360 comes out, assuming they drop to $99 like the PS2 Will.
I have a PS2, and I regret buying it because:
- No hard drive
- Only 2 controller ports
- No Halo
By the way, PS3 is thinking too far ahead by equipping them with BluRay drives(25Gb storage), which are too expensive. By the time BluRay becomes popular, the PS2 and the 360 will be outdated.
Sony will have wasted loads of money on BluRay drives, and MS will win in the end by using the good old cheap DVD(9Gb Storage, dual layer).

Everyone saying that the PS2 will hurt the launch of the XBOX 360 have no grasp of simple economics. First off the only thing that will hurt their launch will be the lack of supply to keep up with the demand.

The main point that everyone is missing is that these products are not comparable. Think about it with cars. When the new Lamborgini is released Ford lowering the price of the Escort is not cutting into the Lamborgini profits. That's because the products are totally different. PS2 lowering their price should hurt any sales of the regular XBOX though, if microsoft doesn't follow.

#57, thats exactly how I feel.
and #59 and #61 are right on the money.

I'm a poor gamer who can't afford to shell out 400 for a XBOX 360 (let alone ANY next gen sys), especially when I wasn't impressed by the original If/when it gets cheaper, I will maybe reconsider. But a $99 PS2 with a whole library of cheap must have games is too good to pass up.

Anything coming out of MS is just a revamp of a PC anyways, and anything WORTH having will come out also on the PC, regardless of what MS says (i.e. I specifically am referring to Fable, but there are others)

In short,
$99 PS2 = Really good buy for someone who never had it
$400 XBox 360 = Too much to spend on something that has not been proven as a good system (and without any must have EXCLUSIVE game releases)

I'm not thinking about layout down four Benjamins for a 360 in the first place. I think the new "next-gen" consoles are (as usual) over-hyped and over priced. I'll be holding onto my PS2 and GameCube while playing so called "next gen" games on my PC and wait and see how the 360 and PS3 actually perform and what kind of services they actually provide. Then after the prices drop, MAYBE I'll think about getting one.

Oh and a drop to 99 bucks for a slim PS2 and I'd definitely replace my old one.

To the casual gamer, which name is more synonomous with the word "computer games"? XBox or Playstation? I know plenty of casual games, and I know their answer would be the latter.

In any case, why all the fuss with these "next-gen" consoles when my PC can pump out graphics just as good now, coupled with mods, patches, add-ons, vast multiplayer support and a word processor? Sheesh. Upgrade your PCs and ditch the consoles!

(In any case, I'll be getting a PS3 :P)
