I'll have the dongle for home, I've got a connection set up for the office (minmal assistance from IT), and I've got a connection for the nearest local hotspot. Works fine, was very little trouble, and I couldn't be happier. This was a very paranoid conversation.

mkds online was originally intended to be played on wi-fi hotspots around the usa(cos theres heaps of them) thats why ist was released there first. the dongle was brought out for people who can't access a hotspot or live in another country with few hotspots around. i live in australia a use the dongle, with it i can go roughly 20 metres out of my house before i lose connection(my friend goes to his back fence and jumps on someones router). i think that nintendo have done a great job setting up their online gamming system, much better than the xbox(who wants to pay extra to play online) & the psp(have they even got theirs up yet?) although the PC still rules the online gamming community(and will for a long time!!!) also nintendo are setting up free hotspots in a couple of EB games stores near me to play online with, you will also be able to download free demos there aswell. great stuff

will everyone chiiiill out!

Yes it's true the DS only supports WEP, but almost every single wireless router supports WEP.

WPA is "backward compatible" in such a way that every router that has WPA usually supports WEP.
That's not to say u can get the DS online using WPA - that u definitely can't, but all you'd have to do is reconfigure your router to use the "less superior" WEP.

But cmon... if we only ever used security that can't be hacked we'd end up using nothing coz everything is hackable!

WPA is only less vunerable at the moment because it's newer - it won't be long before u start hearing these "3 minute" stats for WPA too.

I've played MKDS online and it's an amazing experience - I suggest you all give it a go.

In the US, 50% of ppl that have purchased it, have tried the game online - it is THE most successful online console game ever, so anyone that thinks ppl won't make a few "sacrifices" to get this game online are clearly wrong.

Buy a second wireless router, 802.11b, set it up as a second subnet off of your primary router (the one running WPA or whatever you use). Use the second router only for DS, set it up with WEP, hide its SSID and filter it to allow only the DS' mac address. This eliminates the concern about having to reduce security for your primary network, because your WPA router will continue to work as normal. No one really cares to decrypt your DS traffic, since you won't be using it for PayPal or eBay. And 802.11b routers can now be had for about 10 bucks.

What you can do is leave your WPA network setup as is.

Add a new router behind existing router (wired connection). Set it to WEP, 802.11b, MAC filtering etc, to accept connection from the NDS wirelessly.

The idea is to have a dedicated access point for your NDS online. Nowadays you can get a good wireless B/G router (Linksys is a good one) for $30 or less.

Cheers. Nintendo is amazing. Just hope they will support WPA soon.
