Microsoft has produced a new viral-marketing campaign, and its main
web site, Hex168.com, is now equipped with a countdown timer
(Origen-style) that will reveal its intentions
tomorrow, Tuesday the 18th, at noon (PDT/UTC-7).
Starting late last week, a series of odd visual clues revolving around a bunch of circular signs began showing up on
random game forums and sites. Still stinging from the Xbox community's overreactions to the decidedly
European results from the Origen Xbox 360 countdown, we
decided to wait until some more concrete word arrived (about Microsoft's new site
to aggravate 360 watchers) before writing a post to commemorate it.
Thankfully, some useful Hex info has been discovered… well, sort of. At least we won't have to wait too long for
news.
GameSpot?s weekly Rumor Control feature pulled together the better speculation from around the web
late Friday night, allowing us to safely reminisce about
Ourcolony.net teasers, the original ilovebees ARG, and maybe even how to convert between different base numbering
systems. The most that they can tell us is that MS and its favorite viral-marketing firm are behind the scheme, but
nothing more can be nailed down with certainty.
So what does it all mean? The release date of Halo 3? More NCAA football games?
The official
360 launch lineup? More tickets to the U.S. pre-release
launch party? (Or, uh? Chicago
tickets to the World Series?) Only one day more and we?ll get to find out. Probably. We?re hoping they?ll have
psychedelic bunnies that?ll explain everything to us. What
about you?
[Thanks, Landon, Buttonbasher, Master X 24,
Matt, and all of our tipsters!]
