Yesterday, Microsoft announced "the retail availability of its first cross-platform game controller and the latest
addition to the Microsoft Game Precision Series," otherwise known as
the Xbox 360 Controller for
Windows.
According to MS: "The Xbox 360 Controller for Windows retail product will include a driver for Windows XP-based PCs.
The wired Xbox 360 Controller, which comes with the core Xbox 360 system, will also work on Windows XP-based computers
after users download the available driver from Microsoft." Big console and PC publishers like EA, THQ, Ubisoft, and
Vivendi promise support on the Windows side of things, and drivers for the USB-based pad will also be made available
for download from the Windows Update and
the MS Hardware web sites.
Of course, if you were paying attention to our site on Wednesday, you would already have been aware of the many
pics and
display confirmations at local Wal-Mart stores, but
getting official confirmation of the first tangible sign of the 360 (er, not
that sign) in actual stores is notable,
nonetheless.

Are there any PC games that are coming out over the next couple of weeks that will recognize this controller? Can I use this controller if I buy FEAR for the PC?

As for compatible games from the publishers mentioned, here's what each company had to say in the press release from MS:
EA - "Microsoft's new cross-platform controller will make it easier for Electronic Arts to develop games for both Windows and Xbox 360. It also promises to help bring our top-notch catalog of sports, driving and action games to wider audiences."
THQ - "THQ is excited about the release of the new Xbox 360 Controller for Windows, as it will give gamers the precise control needed when playing games such as 'MotoGP URT 3' and other titles. The introduction of Microsoft's first cross-platform controller is an exciting peek at what the future holds for multiplatform development."
Ubisoft - "Ubisoft is thrilled about Microsoft's new Xbox 360 Controller for Windows. Ubisoft's stunning games, such as 'Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones,' combined with the ease of use of the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows will enable gamers to take full advantage of the features in both the game and controller."
Vivendi - "Microsoft's new Xbox 360 Controller for Windows creates a consistent, high-quality gaming experience across multiple platforms. The industry has been anxiously awaiting a new standard in controllers for Windows"
So, basically, the new Prince of Persia game, a (new?) Moto GP game, and EA's sports, driving, and action games. This doesn't take into account compatibility with pre-existing titles, however, as drivers may make playing with older games possible (if not a lot more like the console gaming experience) on your PC.

I don't understand the point of this, making a PC version of a console controller.
Isnt the reason that people game on the PC because they don't WANT to play on a console? If the mouse and keyboard is so much better for every game as the PCers say then what is the point of this?
Maybe i'd understand this better if 90% of the PCers werent elistists with the "PC destroys your puny console" attitudes.

The mouse and keyboard aren't better for EVERY PC version, just certain genres.
RTS and FPS are unplayable without mouse and keyboard.
GTA:SA plays much better with a gamepad.
Etc etc.
There's no simple rule.

I still think Gamepad > WASD/Mouse for FPS.
I've grown up on consoles so I MUCH prefer the controller over the mouse/keyboard for FPS.
"But the keyboard and mouse give you so much more accurate results!"
Yeah, but i'm playing against other people using controllers,so it's even.

I have the PC version of GTA:SA for PC and the mouse control sucks. I need a gamepad for my PC.
But this wired xbox 360 controller costs $45? A little too pricy I think.

The main reason why this is for the PC also is because it has USB interface already and sooner or later people will find a way to put it on a PC. Heck there's even USB adapters/driver for the current Xbox S Controller for the PC. It's logical to officially support it. But that shoots down what MS is doing with the 360. Perhaps PC gamers will get to play almost all games on the 360 without even having to buy a 360? Say Gears of War in 2007 or Fall 2006 for the PC? Just add live to the PC.
I can play COD2 with the Xbox 360 controller on the PC in two weeks instead of 5.

To those asking why I'd suggest taking a look here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/directx9_c/Introduction_to_the_10_Foot_Experience_for_Windows_Game_Developers.asp
To summarize, they wish for people who have a Xbox 360 on a network connected with their Windows Media Center PC be able to sit down in front of their HDTV, launch, and play PC games all without touching a keyboard or a mouse beyond installing the game. Myself, I'm pretty excited about the prospect of being able to take advantage of this feature.

Not every game on the PC is a FPS, MMO or RTS. Primarilly PC sports gamers will really benefit from this. A lot of the controllers on the market are really made like CRAP. Logitech, I'm looking at you...

don't they have usb/console adaptors that do the same thing?

I'd rather see a KB/Mouse combo for the XBox ...

If I wanted to swap in my mouse and keyboard I woulda done that a while ago or just play my Xbox more often which, by the way, makes a great brick sitting in my living room untouched.
I don't even know why I bothered to pay $300 dollars for the bloody thing. Console games have no replay value. Period.
Replay value is what makes a great game. PC Games are chock full of it, I'll tell yah!
Why anyone would want this for a PC? Hell, I dunno.

I just made the switch from xbox to a dell xps and i thought there would be no difference but i was so wrong..the graphics of f.e.a.r are so much better than my HALO 2 (which is supposed to be the best for xbox)but i really hate using the keyboard to play.I went and bought a controller for my pc but i don't think you can use it for f.e.a.r or if you can i have no clue how to set it up.Are there some games that you can't use the controller for on pc? like f.e.a.r or doom 3? etc. I have NHL 2006 and the controller is way better than the keyboard for that (it works with that game but not with any of my others) Anybody with any info please let me know..i am new to PC gaming.Another quick question..do you think a pc version of lets say call of duty 2 will have noticibly better graphics than the xbox 360 version? I havea 2.3 proc/2gb ram/nvid-7800/100hd

Right now Call of Duty with a 7800gt or x850xt and up look MUCH better on pc. I can say this because i have played both pc and xbox 360 version, and i own the pc version. I must say if i had a hdtv to hook up my pc too it would look almost 2x better than xbox 360's call of duty 2.
