David Jaffe wants new game to "make you cry"
After the success of God of War, creator David Jaffe did not
take path most traveled with developers and get to work right away on God of War 2. In fact, Jaffe is still
not 100% committed to making a sequel - "we're going to wait and see what the fans want us to do," he told
MTV.
The point of the interview, however, was not God of War at all, but Jaffe's new project for the Sony PSP.
Although no information is known about the project, Jaffe says that his goal with the game is to make people emotional.
His game will deal with "what's happening in the country, what's happening with American and the military, [but] not be
critical about it. His hopes is to make a game that can "address political views and still be fun and still be
commercial and compelling."
If Jaffe keeps his goal of making gamers "actually choked up — if not crying," then he would be well
advised to make it an RPG or FPS. Jaffe's untitled project
has been in development for a few months, and hopefully we will get some more concrete information soon.

What about the preview about Kratos' brother in the extras section of God of War? I was really hoping for that game.

A portable game for a portable with a 4.5inch screen with somewhat subaverage battery life that's epic... something doesn't seem right here.

"he would be well advised to make it an RPG or FPS"
He'd also be well advised not to release it on the PSP. I'm not sure how emotionally invested you could get in a portable system.

I believe the most important thing for Jaffe will be whether he can get players invested in the characters and the storyline of his game if he really wants to make them all teary-eyed. Even a non-RPG/FPS game like Metal Gear can be moving if it's planned and executed correctly, so the impact of a game should not be limited simply by its genre or its given platform.

i agree with Dignan
if you want to get emotions involved release it on a next gen system so people can experiance it on their big screens and not a crappy little PSP.

actually choked up if not crying,
???
What is this? A video game or a chick flick?
If I catch one of my friends crying because of a video game he is going to get a smack to the back of the head.

Look, if your going to spend more than 6 hours a day playing video games... you need to get out and get some fresh air. ::rolls eyes::

It's a portable. It's for playing on the go. You don't have an immersive experience in the doctor's office waiting room. =|

The point of video games are to entertain the player and not to bog them down with social issues. They are a form of escape from the real world and keep your minds off the things outside. Games at the end of the day are supposed to be enjoyable and fun.
theokandroid @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Yeah, so are movies, music, books and comics. But dont tell me you've never gotten a little emotional over a film or a good book. Videogames are a medium just like anything else and its great that Jaffe is finally bringing a little art to the game. Metal Gear Solid is so great because of it's cinematic style. And thank god social issues are finally coming to games. David Jaffe, I bow down to you.
weaszel @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
You know you guys cried during the FMV in which Aeris died. Anybody who says they didn't is a liar... A filthy liar.
TNT @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
There is no problem feeling emotions during a game. That is not my complaint. I love to have some kind of emotional connection with the stroyline or characters. But don't start preaching social issues in video games. A person gets bombarded with those kinds of things all day. Just allow one facit of a person's day free of it.
Schmitty @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
#7 We are talking about battery life. Not about blowing your load while playing a video game.
Ninegauger @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Look if people want to buy games that deal in social issues then they'll buy them. I have no problem with social issues in games as long as the games are still fun or enjoyable. If not, I won't play them.
Also, if this is the guy I'm thinking of from the commentary on the game disc I wouldn't take him too seriously. He kept talking about God of War being "sexual" and all that it amounted to was a sex scene and some boobs between killing things. I bet all he'll do to make gamers cry is to kill a main character. As if that hasn't been done before.
