I think messing around with a gun, especially a known criminal's gun and shooting him, no matter where, when you're in no danger is probably a really really bad idea.

No insult meant, but it's ironic that in the comments to this newspost, the first comment's thinking seems straight out of a video game.

The line blurs further...

That would be awesome actually to actually have some of the people fight back before actually jacking the car...come on Rockstar, it's the next generation--time to up the ante.

He must've seen "Fast Times At Ridgemont High". Are you sure it wasn't Judge Reinhold?

I'm waiting for the carjacker to sue McD or Starbucks for making the coffee too hot and giving him second degree burns ;)

He could've been shot. In fact I really don't see how the jacker was so thrown off by a blunt force from the door opening. If anything it would have thrown him/her back, putting distance between the owner and the jacker.

Distance = very bad when you're at gunpoint. You want to be in trapping distance. If the barrel is placed against your body as a threat, so much the better for disarming. When the assailant is standing four feet away is when you start sh1tting a brick. Can't close in time, can't run either.

Come on, think about it with the liberal judges we have out these days, the carjacker could sue this guy now for throwing the coffee in his face. It is sad but something that we will unfortunatly hear about next week. Oh well hope the carjacker is in some serious pain for a long time.

I'm not sure of the situation in the US (I'm from the UK), but the driver's actions would definitely have constituted self defence, which would block the attacker from ever suing the driver.

What's different about self defence in America?
