I saw one of these at the mall yesterday. There was a promotion and they had a huge kiosk selling them. I played with one and it was terrible. I have a DS and a PSP, and this was worse than either. I though FIFA 2005 would be fun but it wasn't. I just set it down before even trying the GPS or anything else. It really sucked.

p.s.

What i ment to say was the graphics were abismal. Totally horrible, looked like a Gameboy Advanced. I wish the psp had the cool feature built in, but overall it was just bad.

This thing smells of failure. Even with the extra GPS or whatever features it is still going to be a failure. It has the recipe for failure:

It is an ugly device
with a terrible name
lacking good launch titles
by a company that is not well known
not having been advertised enough

I see these in a bargain bin by 2006

Glad to see they updated the giz pic ;)
And playback only stutters if the video isnt converted correctly. Oh, and you played FIFA? That's the single game on the gizmondo with the crappiest graphics. You really should play Richard Burns Rally. Do they have playable demos at the kiosks? At the flagship gizmondo store in london, they have playable demos of as-yet unreleased games, with much better graphics, and which are much better games overall. like Chicane, Colors, Hit & Myth and Johnny Whatever.
For a look at a game with better graphics, watch this video of Colors:
http://gizmondo.com/img/media/4/colors_demo_movie.zip
It's really cool

When I first heard about this I was impressed with it's stack load of features (GPS, GPRS, Text msg, mulitmedia, camera, 400 mhz!). Unfortunetly having so many nice features packed into this hand held. It fails to deliver a good performance over all. Stuff like, a terrible libarary of games, a horrible camera - no flash or zoom, making it's customers pay for a system with a small screen... when a gizmondo with a bigger screens in the making. But it is a good deal for the $229 even though you'll haveta buy another sd card for media but whatever. But the moral of the story is.... talk is cheap lol

Lesbian Ham,

There's almost no real gameplay footage - over half of it is showing a pre-rendered FMV subway train sequence.

Yeah, about the camera. You can use it to take pics, which it does reasonably well outdoors and in well-lit conditions (not too good in low-light conditions). Or you can use it for augmented reality, or as a gyroscopic controller.
I've got to go now, but google those and see what comes up - pretty interesting, I can assure you :-)

Why was this even released in the US?? It's the game.com all over again. I think Tiger is going to be hurt as a result of this launch. Was the world really asking for another handheld? Even Sony is having a tough time with the PSP

the gp2x's rumored to run ~200mhz, but probably overclocks to alot higher (the gp32 was made to run at 133mhz only, but safely clocks to 166-220ish). i wouldn't buy the gp2x just yet, since most distributors are european, and charge too much. i'd wait for the stuff to get ported over, and buy one cheap on ebay.

gizmondo is absolutely horrible, and the games really pathetic. i think im gunna go and play as some dude who shoots shit out of his guitar and kills zombies.

I wasn't planning on getting one of these things, if Colors is the only game that this thing has remotely going for it then its going to tank fast. Also I wouldn't pay for a service that sends 3 advertisements to the device a day. Thats just wrong. Looks like this thing is a jack of all trades and master of none.

Hopefully Tiger will learn that handheld gaming systems are about games rather than the amount of features that can be crammed into it. They could have atleast went along the path of the GP32/GP2X and supported homebrew on the device with official toolkits, etc.

heh. i went to the website to see what it had to say about the gizmondo, and apparently, the gizmondo is less a device for consumers, and more a device to make tiger telematics profitable. watch the video here:

http://www.tigertelematics.com/products.asp

seriously, this is the "product" section of the website. it should be telling me about what the device can do for me, not what the device does for the company. i'm a consumer, not an investor. i don't want to hear about how it will target me with smart-ads.

weird, just weird...

GP2X has dual ARM cpu's running at 200mhz, as well as a dedicated 2D chip. The recommend the open source Quake1 engine for 3D game development. It's going to kick ass. It's like a little portable Linux computer. The possibilities of this device are endless. I am anxious to play around with it.

Videos and some other information about it here:

Har Har Har!

I was just thingking that Lesbian Ham was a PR flack for Gizmondo... But I dunno. Her/His Gizmondo boosting seems more fanboy/fangirl.

The PR flacks usually hit the boards in groups and fight with one another (with the con person of course losing) in order to establish a "history" and gain the "trust" of the board.

Gizmondo is waaaay past being able to put any positive spin on this crap. They are simply lost ... as lost as the Rokr. Even worse...

That's what they have had planned for 2 years and shown at E3 both times. But your device is only as cool if it works. I'm still waiting for them to send a review device.

I have a degree in PR (yes, they exist) and I barfed 15% of the way through that Tiger Telematics promo video. I hate this company. They represent everything the empty, hype-filled dot.com bubble stood for with their lavish stores and mediocre products. Take careful note of everyone associated with Tiger, and avoid their projects like the plague in future.

This is much worse than the Game Gear. That at least had some decent games, and was an okay seller. I can't think of a handheld that was worse. This contraption is truly in a league of its own. Maybe it can be hacked to run emulators, so it isn't completely worthless...

There is a story brewing that the guys behind this company has a criminal past, in Sweden. And that some serious amounts of money ha been transfered from the company within the past 6 months.

As if the product itself was not bad news...

I'm from Sweden where most of the guys heading this company are from. Over here they are known economic criminals and mobsters with long previous jail sentences. One guy called Stefan "Fat Steffo" (even got their own mob nicks) Eriksson was sentenced to 10.5 years back in 93 for heading a moblike outfit called "the Uppsala Mafia", and their muscle guy Johan Enander was sentenced to 6+ years in 93 for assault and extorsion. He is now working as "Head of security" at the company. Our biggest daily called Aftonbladet here in Sweden, is running a piece today about where the $200 million they lost so far this year has gone. To me it seems like a classic company plundering scheeme, with a lot of off-shore holdings and mysterious payments to shady affiliates. All top guys recieve huge bonuses and drive expensive cars, despite the fact that they are not making any money. My advice is obvious: stay waayyyy clear of anything this company releases!

Not even close. For this to work as a GPS system, you still need to buy the maps. The maps retail for $169 for a quarter of the US.

A Nokia N-Gage and bluetooth GPS receiver would be much cheaper. Especially since there must be a few knocking about second-hand these days. ;)

These are some "colorfull" folks behind the Gizmondo. Before it became "Tiger Telematics" it was called "Floor Decor" (they sold discount flooring in Florida). Regarding the founder and CEO of Floor Decor A.J.Nasar, check out this article: http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0VCW/is_19_27/ai_79588842
And then there is the current CEO Michael Carrender, apparently he is reported to have been an "End Time" cult member: http://www.rickross.com/reference/endtimes/endtimes22.html
