A student from the University of Missouri
bagged a $3,000 grant to investigate the evolution of video game music — from Super Mario Bros. to
Katamari Damacy. Patrick Dell took a look at a type of media which is relatively under researched, despite the
effects it has on people that experience video game music.
His research underlines the mental ties people make with music in video games. According to Dell, people tend to remember the time of their life they were playing a certain game. The music is an essential part of this memory. He also took at look at the emerging market for video game music: many publishers are now releasing soundtrack CDs alongside a new game release.
With game music concerts and game music remixes popping up here, there and everywhere, it's not hard to see the effects of music on gamers. We'd love to hear any experiences Joystiq readers have regarding video game music; so do you have an iPod chock full of 8-bit classics?
