This is such a dumb argument, answer this if you are really gonna play ur ps2 games on ur ps3. i would use it once, to test it but never again, I would buy ps3 games and play games like san andreas because those games will be backwards compatible for sure.

Why do people keep arguing about backwards compatability. I know for a fact that i don't care about playing gt1 on my ps2 because i have newer versions that are better. With the gaming industry so stuck on remaking franchises, making better games with newer versions of games, why would you want to go backwards? I don't care to play Burnout 1 on my xbox 360. I don't care to play silent hill 1 on my ps2 or 3. It's unbearable to play most old ps1 games because the graphics are so bad. I feel like I should care less. And also, let me say it's not "JUST 44" games that have problems playing on ps2's. I work at a gamestore and we have used ps2's come back all the time broken not playing any dvds, then some come back no playing blue back discs, then some don't play ps1 discs, and then some don't play anything! I've tweaked these systems and adjusting the laser only helps 30% of the time. Sony just makes shoddy ps2's. M$ made shoddy early versions of the xbox, the "thompson" drive for example. The wiring that causes the PSU to burn out. Each system is going to have problems. The question is if SONY can change laser types, disc formats (again) on a relatively new technology and still not have any problems playing old discs. It doesn't look likely.

There are like 100 million PS2's sold. Why in the hell does anyone think there is a need for backward compatibility. If you don't already and need a PS2, get one on ebay for $10 next fall. Honestly, unless there are no decent ps3 games at luanch, no one is going to care about booting ps2 software on ps3.

James, you said "ony has never stated anything about toy story graphics." Ummm, you're wrong... In speeches before the PS2 launched, the idiots over at Sony said that we would see Toy Story-like graphics on the PLAYSTATION 2. Yes, the PS2 not the PS3. Even the best PS2 graphics now are just decent...

Rare Hare,
I've seen you here for weeks, and yet you still haven't gained any insight. Try learning a thing or two before spouting off like an idiot. Plus calling someone a "f___head" isn't very smart seeing as you are the one who doesn't know your head from a hole in the ground.

Engadget and Joystiq use the EXACT same forums. Try this link:

I dont even like sony but I have to admit that being backwards compatible isnt a big deal. why buy new hardware and play old software on it. but hey sony is just going to do what they do best. bag on the competition, make pretty videos, and sell 100 million consoles to 50 million people.
mircosoft and nintendo, take note

Wanna see nerds get into a sissy slap fight? Mention "PSx" and "xBox" in the same sentence - keep the humor coming ladies.

Most, if not all, "popular" games from ps1 & ps2 will be backwards compatible. It's the small, independent games like "Khalid Shaikh Mohammed's Falafel CART GP: 2001" that you need to worry about, where developers weren't afraid to explore their boundaries without consideration of future consoles.

Backwards Compatabile = Overrated.

Having owned a PS2 for many years, I put my first PS1 game into it late last week. Had the PS2 not been backwards compatabile, I would have taken my PS1 out of the closet.

Is it nice to be bakwards compatabile, sure. But 9/10 people *do not* care and *will not* use the capability even if it exists. Not the other way around.

Aw crap - you caught me. I went back and did some research, and it turns out that they never said anything about PS3 making you breakfast either. It was, in fact, a 5-course dinner. The cholesterol monitoring is straight from Kutagari's lips to God's ears, tho.

Backward compatibility is all well and good. It's too bad there are no slots for PS1/PS2 Memory Cards on the PS3, however.
