1up is very trusting of Japanese blog CoolGamer: "not once has their
news turned out to be a false lead." It's that kind of statement that adds validity to CoolGamer's latest
claim
(
translation), citing the latest issue of Famitsu, that the PlayStation 3 will launch in Japan sometime
this spring for less than 40,000 yen, or about $400 in the United States.
Back in the day (5 years prior), the PlayStation 2 launched in Japan for 40,000 yen and later in the US for $300.
These price figures would put the console in direct competition with the Xbox 360, which will likely cut its price
around the time of PS3's launch. This is still speculation, as Sony will not announce an official price until sometime
next year, a couple of months prior to the console's launch.
Most important of all, however, is the knowledge that GameStop's PS3
Omega bundle will likely sell for only $2000 with a dozen
games, extra controllers, and your very own
Ken Kutaragi bobble head doll.
