Sony today announced earnings for the quarter ended September 30, 2005. While the rest of
Sony sunk (posting about half the profit it had in the year-ago period), the games business was a bright spot for the
company. Here's a summary of the games portion of the earnings release:
-
Sales increased 79.1% (vs. the year-ago period) "as a result of the contribution from hardware and software sales of the PlayStation Portable"
-
"an increase of PlayStation 2 ("PS2") unit sales in Europe and the U.S. compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year resulted in a significant increase in sales in all geographic areas." (Say what? How does that work?)
-
"Overall software sales increased as a result of the contribution to sales from PSP software, despite a decrease in PS2 software sales."
-
PS2 shipments: 5.01 million units (an increase of 3.02 million units)
-
PSP shipments: 3.75 million units (no year-ago period to compare it to)
-
PS2 software shipments: 50 million units (a decrease of 6 million units)
-
PSP software shipments: 9.0 million units
[Thanks, Anand]
