Many among the Star Wars faithful have complained over the usage (misusage?) of Obi-Wan's ghost in the new Galaxies expansion, Trials of Obi-Wan. He appears in his post-death spectral form to guide players in their quests, leaving many to wonder why he isn't off helping Luke or how there can be so many other Jedi in a timeframe when they were "all but extinct".
Fair questions to be sure, but part of the allure of such games is that they put you right in the middle of the exact continuities that many gamers have been asking for all along. The writers of the Star Wars comics and novels are constantly dreaming up new offshoots of the main storylines, otherwise we would be left with only the original movie plots.
Perhaps the greater issue regarding the popular continuity is that while authors have guidelines for dos and don'ts, MMORPGs are relatively open-ended and allow users the freedom to create scenarios that might run contrary to storylines that are held sacred. However, I don't think anyone would be complaining if you could make your Jedi avatar mind trick Leia into putting that bikini back on.
