Not really. The article covers avatars from a number of games and the gamers were obviously selected based on in-game profile or photogenics. Most players aren't hot chicks or law professors. The character that acts as a store bot for example wasn't selected because of some underlying psychological factor of her player, she was built as a cute girl to attract customers.
A broader sample would be interesting, but this doesn't go beyond a bunch of colourful pictures.

A bunch of colorful pictures that happens to bust the "they're all violent teenagers in basements" stereotype the media loves so much.

That's not saying many, if not the vast majority, aren't. But it's nice to see someone in the media look for another angle to the story than Jack Thompson.

I guess he could be considered smart for choosing a female avatar since they DO get preferential treatment by other players, but men who masquerade as women always freaks me out. I always choose a male character because that's who I am. I may not be 7 feet tall or have superhuman strength like the my Elvaan avatar, but it's still a projection of who I am. I wish more people would play MMOs like that.

#2: Busting stereotypes? Not with such a narrow sample.
I'm not a fan of unfair representation of gaming in the media, but it goes both ways.

Picked on photogenics? Well the guy is a photojournalist kinda his thing to take colourful photos.

Also I think I saw a good range real-life people, corporate types, uni students, fit/Unfit, healthy/disabled...

this looks like an interesting excersize with very good results.

I think this is a fascinating start to what could be a really interesting book idea.

Yeah the sample population is low, and the people pictured might not be the "norm," but it's a pretty good start.

The book will contain many more images. The images that you've seen are a very small selection- and are obviously selected for the purposes of making a good story for the people covering the project. At the same time, the "norm" might make you uncomfortable if you think that people generally do this for the same reasons, from the same cultures and are all like you.
