In August this year, Valve started a massive hardware survey of the users of its Steam online game distribution system. The survey which was last updated in September, features over 800,000 different hardware configurations obtained from participants of the online survey.
After a quick sweep of the survey we can estimate that the average PC has a 2Mbps broadband connection, between 256-512MB of RAM, and has around a 2GHz processor. The most popular graphics card are ATI Radeon 9600/9800s, with the GeForce 4MX/FX 5200 coming up third and fourth. There are also some oddities to the data. At least 4 people have tried to run Steam with a "virtual CPU". A handful of frustrated Mac gamers booting up Virtual PC maybe?
