GameCube loses Starcraft: Ghost
Sad news for GameCube owners. Today,
Blizzard announced that its upcoming console game, Starcraft: Ghost, will forego a release on the GameCube. A
Battle.net moderator cited
online issues for the cancellation: "Unfortunately the GameCube has no online service and since so much work is going
in to the online portion, it would be additional work to release only part of the intended game." The moderator is
quick to point out, however, that "the GameCube and Revolution will still be considered for future products."
The game will still be released on the Xbox and PlayStation 2. For those wondering, Starcraft: Ghost will be
played through Battle.net for PS2 owners and Xbox Live! for those with Microsoft's console.

This is sad, yet understandable.
Unknownguy @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
How could they!
*Mutters*
I've been waiting so long :(.
Kristian @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Blizzard just permenantly lost themselves a customer.
Jake @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Oh well, would've bought the xbox version anyways (since it has a better FPS controller)
Still, as a Nintendo fanboy, I'm saddened. Luckily they aren't dropping Nintendo for future products, and with Nintendo's crazy new wifi effort, thing's will be right as rain for the next gen.
Hey - I bet SC:G will get delayed another year or two anyways, so maybe we will be playing it on the Revolution :)
matt @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
who cares? at this point, I'd be surprised if it came out at all....
syco @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM

Neither does the PS2. They are both equally online, granted without the luxuries of a Live-style setup. Just because nobody makes online games for the Cube doesn't mean it can't do it.
AND it doesn't matter, I wasn't going to be play the game online anway. Even if I bought it for my PS2, I'd still have to go out and buy an ethernet adapter, exactly the same as if I had bought a Cube version, and I'd get better graphics on a Cube. Quality decision there, Blizzard. Way to use your head.
*goes back to playing World of Warcraft*
Jago @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Ehh...if the game has the same quality it had back in 2004 then it isn't a bad thing then that it got dropped.
It played like ass during E3 2004...
Twist @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Now if they can just release it sometime in the next decade.
Senor @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
I dont think everyone who got the Gamecube is a nintendo fanboy, shawn.
jay trey @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
AGGHH!!
Wasn't this originally going to be a gamecube exclusive title?
abhinav @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Too bad for GC owners i guess

Brian @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Ugh. What is it about the Gamecube that everyone except for Sega say it has no online service? (PSO worked perfectly fine.)
DarkMavis @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Well said syco. I completely agree with you. Someone should start an online petition. It might sway Blizzard. Who knows...
M.A.R. @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
There's no way I'm getting an online adapter for the PS2 for just this game, and there's no reason for me to get an Xbox since I own a decent PC.
If they release a PC version, I'll consider it - otherwise no way. But a GCN version - yesssss....too bad.
Jago @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
"Wasn't this originally going to be a gamecube exclusive title?"
Nope...
rayk @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
I'm still VERY FRICKING pissed that they are NOT releasing this on PC! Common WTF Blizzard, starcraft is considered one of the best games on PC (yes you can argue, but that's more personal) and yet, for some reason you decided to tell all your loyal starcraft fans to f* off and release this on a console instead. Thanks we really appreciate it...
- a pissed starcraft fanboy
Back_Lit @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
No-one will buy it anyway, too many unable to stop playing WoW
robotplague @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
I absolutely love my Gamecube, it's my favorite console this generation. But it's definately understandable, in fact it's just going to get worse and worse until the Revolution comes out. Which I think is another reason for them to hurry up and try to get it out there (if it's feasable and not going to mess anything up).
ZildjianKX @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
The gamecube is just as online friendly as the PS2... I bet most PS2 owners will never take the game online, so it's a pretty lame excuse.
Hell, I own two gamecubes and I have broadband adapters for each (for Mario Kart).
Ninegauger @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
This game used to look pretty hot but recently I haven't really been looking forward to it as much as before. I had wanted to buy it for Gamecube considering it's more powerful than the PS2, but that's why I have a PS2 in the first place to get them non-Nintendo games. But I should have like the GC one though... I wasn't planning to play online anyway.
TaiZ @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Heh, my local EB Games let me pre-order this for Gamecube when it was announced. Looks like that money is going to Mario Kart: DS.
Oshi @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Sooo, why couldn't they use Battle.net for Gamecube? They have to for PS2, after all.
This furthers my griping that it's the 3rd party's fault for not supporting GC online. They have to do the same own-server stuff for PS2, why not GC :/
Moot point now though...
CapAmerica @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Guess I'm waiting for this game to hit the $9.99 bin at Wal-Mart. I would have picked it up on day 1 for the GameCube but now that there isn't a Cube version I'm just going to hold off on it.
Chokey @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
JEEEZ! the one game from blizzard I was anticipating to hit the cube. WHY?! I thought the single-player experience would have been enough for Gamecube owners....it would have been enough for me. I too have a BBA for the Gamecube. way to go for 3rd parties.
Spiza @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
I think they main point here is that they are building a large online portion for a game for last gens consoles. We are already into the next gen with xbox360. Who is going to play an online game with last gen graphics. Do they think people are going to get it over even PD0?
The game better be delayed and ported to 360, ps3, and rev if it has any shot of being successful.
Pretty Obvious @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
How is anybody suprised? This is the norm for a Gamecube owner. Having your title lose exclusivity or altogether being cancelled.
Nintendo has always been one step behind, this gen its the online, well see about the Revolution.
Rx @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Huh. I would have purchased the GCN version. Now I can't. I'll still play it, but I'm not going to part with any money for the privilege.
Oscar @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
omg Ive been waiting for this game for so long :(. I need a XBox...
Nome @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Yeah online multi on GCN sucks azz. But maybe it'll come out on Revolution. I sure as don't have an Xbox to play it with.
dslamngu @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
I'm not sure why anybody considers themselves locked into a platform at this point between generations. I know you GC owners have invested an entire $100 into your gaming experience, but for something like $120 you can grab a PS2 or an XBOX and play the best games of this past generation for about $10 per game.
There is NO REASON why anybody here who is gainfully employed at a job that at least requires a partial high school education couldn't own two or more consoles. Is it because Nintendo Timmy's Mom and Dad don't want to give him that advance on his allowance?
If you can't afford $120 for a PS2 or $140 for an Xbox at this point in the console cycle, you have other things to worry about than the release of Starcraft Ghost. Fix your crippling poverty before you pick up that controller.
I-Hate-Blizzard-Now @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
"the GameCube has no online service"
And neither does the PS2 you excuse-making son-of-a-b***h!
Blizzard use to be one of my favorite companies of all time...but in the last few years I've begun to hate them more and more. Now, they've just officially lost one of their biggest fans. Jack-a's...
By the way, look what I found:
http://www.petitiononline.com/SConGC/petition.html
That didn't take long...
Sagan @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
That petition sucks. I would sign a similar petition which doesn't sound like it was written by a 14 year old, because I would have loved to play that game and now can no longer. BTW Online Multiplayer has been done once already on Gamecube. Admittedly noone played it but I would buy the network adapter just for this game.
NagoyaX @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
well this really pisses me off...
I got a gamecube expecting this game... and its been delayed over and over and over again... i was hopping to get it for my birthday 1 dam year ago, caz that was suppose to be its release date >.<
NOW i FIND I CANT EVEN PLAY IT....
It better be 360 compatable or im really gonna lose it!
Joseph @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Yep, pretty lame Blizzard. At least they could give us the real reason: "We never release a game that doesn't have the potential to reach a blockbuster status, and the gamecube just doesn't have the userbase to reach that status." This game will sell terribly mixed up with all the other generic shooters on those 2 platforms, where exclusively gamecube owners would pick it up immediately for something completely new. Blah.
Sagan @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
The Blizzard-guy on the official forums argued that they couldn't do online because Nintendo doesn't sell the broadband adapters anymore. After someone pointed out that that was wrong he stopped answering...
Here's a link to it:

syco @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Clarification: All online petitions suck. They are a waste of time, and nobody cares. If you want to convince a company of something, send them a personalized email. Even if noone reads it, someone will at least have to skim the subject lines. If there's 2000 "GCN can do online" lines in thunderbird, they might do something.
However, if they have to go to a webpage and read 2000 instances of "OMFG GCN 4 LIFE!!!!111one", they're just going to laugh.
PvpMan22 @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Wow....................................
That is REAL dissapointing for me, I've been waiting for a NEW starcraft experience for a very LONG time...
Well if they do decide to make a future game then atleast the Revo's Controller will be perfect for compatibility with PC version...
*nods head at another day of life...
PvpMan22 @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
O yeah I would get another version of it on another console but I am saving up for multiple items at the moment(car, laptop, insurance, etc.) and usually play other games on other consoles at peoples houses that have those consoles...So yea
amiga_tone @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Hello GC Broadband Connector!
WTF? They obviously have no idea about the Cube and it's online capabilities.
Unfortunately not many people do. I currently have a broadband connector that is being totally ignored because game publishers choose to ignore it.
So far if a game has a particular hardware requirement, Nintendo will sell a bundled version of the game with the peripheral as well as a copy of the game without.
I've never played PSO as it was never released in Australia and I've always wanted to play Mario Kart DD online but the whole warp pipe thing never really worked for me.
Why can't someone just write 1 decent game to at least allow proper Online Cube gaming?
It's a situation just like this that pisses me off because game publishers are too scared to try something different.
Besides since when was Starcraft Ghost supposed to be online? Obviously this is something new since the game was supposed to come out a year ago and I'm sure when it does finally come out, everyone will be using XBox 360, Revolution perhaps even the PS3 in 2007!

#14"there's no reason for me to get an Xbox since I own a decent PC."
Comments like this are really annoying. The Xbox is as much a PC as the rest of the systems are. I only hear comments like this from people that don't own an Xbox. I've been an Xbox owner from day 1 and I've never confused it with my PC.

greeeaaat... nice job blizzard. I was patiently waiting for this game despite their myriad delays and out of nowhere they smack me in the face with a 'cancelled for gamecube'? It really bugs me how Blizzard treat their fans like trash, they come up with the most lame-assed reasons ever like they dont have online gaming support. I was already losing faith in this game when it was delayed again from last December, this just made it sure. Blizzard loses yet another customer.
DemonicIzual @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
i am so Fing Pissed at Blizzard i have been waiting for that game for gamecube ever since i heard it was being created and wtf is the no online shit all about someone give me a hyperlink so i can email blizzard about the GCN version of starcraft ghost and i suggest we all give personalized emails like said in Syco's comment number 37.
Dark @ Dec 22nd 2005 7:29PM
Thats because the game is not so good in the visual part... so they have to released in the worst graphical console: PS2...
