New Mario DS details, screens
Jeux France has picked up some new
Famitsu scans of the
upcoming Mario platformer for the Nintendo DS, and the details are tantalizing and exciting. The scans show Mario in a
typical side scrolling adventure, albeit with a few quirky additions. First off is the size issue: some images show
Mario the size of the entire screen, while others show a tiny Mario facing off against the likes of giant lava worms
and colossal goombas. The other tidbit to pick up from the scans is a new power up - in some pictures you can see Mario
wearing a blue turtle shell on his back, with each color giving Mario a different power (sounds reminiscent of
Super Mario World and the shells Yoshi could swallow).
There is also an interview with producer and level designer Takashi and Tezuka. According to a
translation at 4 color
rebellion, the two-player mode will be mostly competitive, but with just a touch of cooperation: "It's not just about
getting to the goal first - there are…other factors." Very intriguing; hopefully, we will get some more information in
the weeks to come.

Looks good. It'll be one of the first side-scrollers I'll be excited about for a long, long time.
Assuming it is, of course, a side-scroller.

Shweet.
Another title to go on my DS game list. I can't believe what an excellent line-up the two-screened wonder has.
But I hope they use the touch-screen for something other that using power-ups.

I believe "the two-player mode will be mostly competitive, but with just a touch of competition" should have said cooperative instead of competitive.

Excellent. I can't wait to get another copy of Classis Mario Bros included in this game. Presumably.

Wow, that on a DS would be awesome. a wireless single cart Mario Bros battle thing. That would be very good.
This game sounds perfect. I love my 2D side scrollers and this one is hitting my button! so to speak

I'm psyched to see that Tezuka's doing the level design. I still drool over Yoshi's Island, which is the most recent 2D platformer of his that comes to mind.
Shane @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
ohh didnt know he did the yoshi's island stuff...thats the one game I missed and thankfully the one game i was glad they did rerelease on the gba. In my opinion side scrollres are made or not in their level design.

Same here...I picked up Yohsi's Island for the GBA and it had me glued to the screen.

Tiny Mario rules. World 4 of SMB3 was the best.
Christopher7xii @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Mmm... Mario game. been missing that sweet plump plumber since Sunshine.
Luke @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Looks like what Super Mario 64 would have been like in 2-D.
JS @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Can't keep a good old-school plumber down.
LONG LIVE THE KING!
: )
kojo87 @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
apparently you can hold muliple power-ups at once. sweet! ive wanted co-op mario since i was six years old and found out that SMB3 was only alternating.
Matt @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Wow, its like I'm back in the early 90s again, with my SNES... it looks nice.
Bri @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Looks like typical, decade old mario fun ... sorry, but this makes me YAWN a bit ^_^;;

I admit, I do feel a something growing in my groin area. The thought of being able to "touch" Mario with my stylus and watching him grow bigger... exciting!
Oshi @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
go mario go!
Babu @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
This is making me angry... Why you ask?
Because I want to play it now but I cant.

Chill Gman. I love my PSP, usually don't care for the DS. Saying all the DS has is crappy little remakes is pretty naive of you though. So far the only remake has been Mario64 DS. This is an original title, as is that lawyer game, Nintendogs, Advance Wars DS, Kirby, Castlevania, and such. I can't wait for FF3 and Children of Mana myself.
The PSP is nice, but comparing it to an iPod, Zen Vision, and digital camera is silly. I don't know about you, but my PSP doesn't take pictures. I prefer my PSP big time over a DS, but the PSP is nowhere near what you're building it up to be. It's a PS1.5-to-go. It plays some nice games(still waiting on US RPGs), plays music, movies, and views pictures with some net browsing abilities... It's not the godsend you're making it out to be though.
Unless you're purely a tech-whore, I'd suggest at least considering the DS. You really don't gain anything by hating on a system. You just kind of miss out on the possibility of having fun. Granted Nintendogs isnt my cup of tea(or much for the DS aside from Castlevania just yet), but I at least try them out before deciding I don't like them.
RadicalDreamer @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
gman, thanks for acting mature. Bashing somthing you dont have really makes you look cool in the other 10+ millions of DS owners eyes.
I just wonder why the DS sells more then the PSP?
Just remember, Graphics dont mean everything.
*hugs Final Fantasy III*
gman @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
hey, thats my opinion, and btw dont say i dont have them i own both the ds and the psp(well by bro has the ds and i have the psp) and hes kinda been dissapointed so far, im not bashin anything it was my opinion. i mean the ds will REALLY become a cool system when mario kart is released with online, when my bro gets that, ill tell you if i still feel that way. im not a hater, trust me, i am a hardcore sony fan for products like the psp and ps2 and there mp3 players(not the ps3, waaaaaaay to expensive) i love nintendo for there new revolution comin out. it looks better than both the xbox 6969 and the ps56 (j/k) pt together(not a j/k)
gman @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
and @Christopher7xii, you can buy the digi camera add on for 30 bucks when it comes out in a couple months. and those comparisons where just examples to get your mind stimulated.
vrf @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
What's up with the freakin DS? It's almost getting better support from Nintendo than any Gameboy ever did. This is going to be a must-own system pretty soon, despite its less-attractive looks. (Compared to the PSP).
Aaron @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Looks great... I'll pick this one up.

Sitting at the table staring at your DS closed is not as fun as staring at your PSP turned off, admittedly.
DS stands for dual screen, but at Nintendo, the code name DS also stands for Developer System, because it marks a real effort by Nintendo to listen to developers.
Here we have, basically a portable N64 with double the storage space and no load times.. and it's online, with a touch screen and mic.
Yes I own one.
;)
Jason Anderson @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Looking better all the time. Can't wait for this one!
Courtney @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
very excited for this.
