Rev. projector to come w/portable screen?
This mock-up for the Nintendo Futurna(?) has our rumor sense
tingling and on high alert, but it is an interesting idea, nonetheless.
What is it? It's basically a chunky concept Revolution projecting a picture (er, 2 beams of stereoscopic lightning?)
onto a portable rollable display, which might have some relation to
Miyamoto's vague comment about breaking free of the confines
of a TV screen. (Not having to worry about resolutions helps.)
So could this be an example of the surprises Nintendo has in store for us
next year? Most likely not, but we can dream of light-weight, wireless, and easy-to-assemble LAN parties now, can't we?
Downloadable Revolution multiplayer content might actually
make sense here. Sigh.

I guess the photoshoppers needed something else to do since the controller was revealed...
Kakairo @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
Either those screens are tiny, or that Revolution is the size of an old-school VCR. I would be shocked if this were real.
Hachi_roku @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
That funny, It is all because of that Serious gamer guy who said he played one whit Reggie, and it didnt use a tv. It reminds me of thet picture of that revolution Devkit that had the big blue circular light at the bottom of it but it also seemed to be hooked up to an LCD screen as well.
retro @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
it would be pretty sweet if it was real. but from my experience with projectors, bulbs are ass expensive. unless it used some type of superbright LEDs, the projector idea wouldn't happen.
retro @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
nevermind, just read about the LED thing on the image.
xbox360-forums.com @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
It would save me having to buy a television to play it on.
Tighty Whities @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
I just dont see theres enough room in the Rev for a projector as well as the other hardware that has to be there.
On a side note, can anyone find a link for the conceptual rev controller that was black and gray and in two parts? I have been trying to find it on the net and can't. I'm trying to collect all the bogus REVO controller art for a project and I liked that one and can't find it.
Andy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
Yo, Tighty:

Oh, and I'd love it not to be but this looks soo fake.
Tighty Whities @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
Andy,
Thanks alot. I found it on there! You're a lifesaver.
Sockatume @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
It's the half-size Revolution (incapable of actually fitting a disk inside, you'll note) that photoshoppersn came up with a few months ago and which clearly isn't going to be the real product, so I call "fake".
retro @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
would it just be an attachment to the regular revolution? that kind of makes more sense. but it would be sweet if the projector thing was built in to the system
Crushed @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
The Revolution is wider than it is long in that picture (it's the other way around), and the lights are shooting out of the compartments that house the SD Card slots. Failure.
vc @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
This is pure wishful thinking and 100% BS.
MAtt @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
Why is everyone making the asumption that thoserays are a projection?
They clearly are a little more artistic then that so for all we know it could merely be a visual representation of a wireless video connection from the Rev to the screen. The screen could really just be a rollup sort of lcd, and not a projection screen.
I would like to note as well that this picture is extremely old. The article says it was a early conceptual design, so theoretically it could be years old. Designs change people. Whether or not the ideas changed is another matter.
Mars Barrow @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
I think this idea is really interesting and if implemented correctly, could be a big hit. The only thing I don't particularily care for, is all the setup required to play--if this is really true. It's also somewhat surprising that this came out the day after Miyamoto hinted at "getting rid of TVs" in the video game equation as I'm pretty sure this would do that.
Andrew @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
We haven't really gotten a good look at the Revolution, nor are we sure exactly what it's bringing to the table. It looks entirely too much like a professionally made pitch for a product to me for it to be bogus.
I think one thing that we should note, however, is that this whole projection thing -- which I do think is the future of gaming -- doesn't completely make sense, in that the Revolution, regardless of size, still needs to be plugged in. It's not like you can take it anywhere to play.
vc @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
Andrew: I've held the thing in my hands. It's the size of 3 DVD cases. You are not going to fit a high-quality projection device plus a slot-loading DVD player plus graphics and general CPUs plus fans to cool it all in such a space at any reasonable cost. Forget about it. This is pure fantasy.
The more interesting question is why some of Nintendo's fans continue to feel the need to fabricate fantastical mock-ups. Is the information released so far deeply unsatisfying to them?

"The more interesting question is why some of Nintendo's fans continue to feel the need to fabricate fantastical mock-ups. Is the information released so far deeply unsatisfying to them?"
Maybe it's because sites like Joystiq keep biting and they like the little bit of fame they get.
Andrew @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
vc: What about the base that it goes on? As I understand it, there's some sort of detachability going on there. It's not outside the realm of possibility that, for one thing at least, Nintendo might release a second, projecting base at a fairly low cost. I mean, I don't presume to be an expert here; just exploring the possibility.
Xomphos @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
If I remember, there was something about internal DVD attachments. Mabey an internal projector attachment?
vc @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
Andrew: the base is plastic nothingness. It's just to keep the thing upright. It's also tiny. No affordable projector technology that looks good is going to fit inside this console. No way, no how.
kojo87 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
as cool as this is i dont see how it would work. unless you change the setting or it automatically adapts when you set on its side. and it apears that the screen has speekers on it. would the system transmit the audio as well? and the size of the system is an issue as well. but that blank little space on the front of the system does look suspicious...

As sure as I am that this Futurna is all BS, nintendo recently patented something to do with 3d projection - http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=2&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PG01&s1=nintendo.AS.&OS=AN/

I was reading about sumthing like this not to long ago (5 months) it was a portable projector that hooked up and became an anywhere T.V cept several problems first the the light was so bright the whole thing looked a lot lighter and of course number 2 it was FAKE but now that its come up again im starting to think.........maybe
By the way there is more then one revolutionary thing about the revolution thats what i think at least so keep in mined one more additional feature might be shown soon
anonymous @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
I shouldn't be saying this, but since I'm anonymous I guess it doesn't matter. I can, at the very least, guarantee that this is highly possible, and probably true, at least as far as it being a legitimate design. I didn't think that Nintendo would incorporate this concept into Revolution because it would raise the cost too high, but perhaps they found a way since last I heard to go through with it at a reasonable price. I can't really elaborate more, as I've already said too much. I also can't offer a solid way of promising you that what I'm saying is true, and all you have is my word. Take it as you will.
anonymous @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
And, uh, by the way "vc", you're wrong. Projector technology, whether its public knowledge or not, has gotten very, very small. It's absolutely within the bounds of modern technology to fit a very inexpensive yet high-quality projector into a case that small and still have room for the console, and you may even be able to find some information about such projector technology online, perhaps in recent press releases. (I actually don't know whether or not it can be found on Google.) That's all I have to say.
