US to receive Famicom Game Boy Micro
Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed that the Famicom themed Game Boy
Micro would make a stateside appearance in late December as the "20th Anniversary Edition Game Boy Micro." It's unclear
if Nintendo also plans to sell the Famicom faceplate as a standalone accessory—we're assuming they will. Collectors may
value this addition, but the Famicom-look doesn't exactly trigger our "nostalgia button." We wish they'd just hurry up
and release that NES faceplate!

I think that looks rad

I was planning on importing this, but with a price of $99 as opposed to $129, I just might wait for this. Only if it still actually looks like a Famicom controller, and not an NES. And hopefully it will still have that nice box with the Super Mario Bros. inside, not that ugly clear plastic US box.

Very cool looking.

Just the face plate wouldn't look right because all the red areas would be either black or silver depending on which you have.
Why is it taking them so long to make some crappy face plates? There pieces of plastic, not fancy new video games.
GlitchCog @ Dec 18th 2005 10:01PM
^Edit: They're pieces of plastic, not "there."

That's awesome about them bringing the Famicom version to the US. That brings me back (and dates me unnecessarily).

Woah, what?!? I JUST imported the Famicom GameBoy micro, and they're bringing it to the US? I totally did not expect them to bring this to the US, or else I wouldn't have bought it. Are you guys SURE about this? Isn't it going to be just a little different?
JRM @ Dec 18th 2005 10:01PM
weren't the buttons on the NES controller red? To get a real NES-GBM they'd have to make a completely new one with red buttons.

I really think that it will be an NES-themed Game Boy micro, not a Famicom-themed one. I don't see why Nintendo would release a GBm patterned off of a design that was never released in the States; also, he called it a "20th Anniversary Edition" - and December is the 20th Anniversary of the NES, not the Famicom.
If you're lucky, maybe it will include the Famicom faceplates (Player 1 and Player 2).
What I'm waiting for is a White Final Fantasy Game Boy micro, to coincide with the release of Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI on the GBA over the next year. They should release a set of Final Fantasy faceplates this holiday season - one each for FFI and FFII (already on the GBA) and FFIV (due in December). These faceplates could have the logo etching for each of the games. Then, next year, Nintendo could release a special white Game Boy micro with a white faceplate on it, and similair FFV and FFVI faceplates included.
That'd be, well, perfect. And it's not like it's implausible, either. Maybe I'll email Nintendo asking them about it.

I've just seen one of these down local GAME store, and they very cool. Very small and ultra sharp screen, shame its about the 5th version of the thing!
Dan Choi @ Dec 18th 2005 10:01PM
I thought that, too, Joshi, but here's what Reggie had to say about it:
"Q: With the Micro: With the GBA you designed it to look like the NES when you brought it over. When you do the NES Micro will it come with an NES faceplate or will it come just the Famicom Micro.
A: What I passed around will be exactly we will be launching on the 28th of November. Do I envision other micro designs in the next few months? Yes. Might we do a true NES version? Maybe; we'll look at it. We feel though that there are other ways to bring life to this particular device and we have said all along that the micro is a unique shortish term opportunity that we will leverage by making it cool and hip and fun by use of the different faceplates."
